I'll be 25 on the 26th of this month...

They need to put a set of controls out of reach of the driver, so at least the passenger can enter stuff... I wonder if it's linked to the speed signal.. Does it work if the car is stopped, but in drive? I discovered on hackaday.com how to put an OnStar box into NMEA mode and plug it into a laptop to get the GPS signal :-P I bet it won't be much longer before there is a navigation hack for this...

My 86 GL-10 turbo sedan did the same thing, there is a vacuum line that runs along the rear of the spare tire well to a pair of vacuum solenoids that are mounted kinda by the wiper motor. Mine had popped off where it joins up to those two solenoids, but if that line is popped off anywhere between those solenoids and the intake manifold, the 4WD won't engage and the turbo light won't come on. You should be able to hear the turbo spool under hard acceleration, assuming your intake is stock, you'll probably have to listen carefully to hear it, but it makes sort of a hissing type sound (It's a lot more pronounced if you have removed the intake silencer)

I don;t have a Toyota, but the last like 3 times I've gone wheeling, it's been in my 92 4WD Dodge truck... Don't have any action shots of it though since I usually go wheeling at night and the flash on my digi sucks... (And yes I did wheel a Subaru before that, and I still would except it's sitting out at my friend's farm cuz I don't have a spot for it, plus it's not lifted so it doesn't go very far...)

The things you do to get home
Hondasucks replied to desertsubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
In high school I had a 73 Datsun pickup, 1800cc motor with a Weber carb.. The stock throttle cable didn't quite mate up to the weber, so to test it we clamped the cable to the carb linkage with a pair of needlenose vice grips... Worked really well and I drove it for a bit like that, but it wouldn't clear the hood, so my buddy and I drove it for a few days like that with no hood until I got some cable clamps to hold the throttle cable on with. Was pretty neat watchin the vice grips move around as you worked the throttle, since they pretty much stuck straight up in the air lol. -
Key stuck in Ignition 1980 BRAT
Hondasucks replied to danrenfroe2016's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I had that happen to me once, I got fed up and yanked it out with a pair of pliers, just make sure the ignition switch is at the "off/lock" posistion when you yank it out. -
Most of the time you can buy it back for 10% of what they pay you, Flowmastered87GL had almost the same thing happen to him, but it wasn't as much of a direct hit, wrinkled the fender and the bumper, but they gave him $600 something for his wagon, and he bought it back for $65 I think, bought some parts from the junkyard and traded me the bumper he found for mine (since the one he found was white, and I had a Loyale bumper on my TW) and drove it for another year I think until the engine started making funny noises and he parted it out.

Help!!!! Flywheel bolts ROUNDED!!!!!!!!
Hondasucks replied to pinksock's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
They sell some spiffy sockets at Sears that are specifically for rounded off bolt heads, they have one set that's for rounded off heads, and they have another set that's for rounded off heads AND broken bolts/studs, which is what I have, that you drive over the head with a hammer, they work great. They're kind of spendy (I think the set I have was not quite $40) but they will pay for themselves the first time you use them! -
I thought about doing that with my old 84 wagon, I was going to cut it in half right in front of the rear doors, so it still had the rear doors, and then cap the front with plywood or something, and attach some steel to the rear suspension for the trailer tongue to be welded to, so it'd still have the hatch and the side doors, but then I decided it had too much rust in the undercarriage to mess with it, so I stripped it and sent it to the junkyard. I saved the 2WD rear suspension out of the car that got the 4WD setup out of that wagon, and someday I'm going to make a trailer out of it :-P

Excessive rear tire wear
Hondasucks replied to wb51286's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My turbowagon ate the rear tires after my chopped rear coils sagged :-( I put some stock 2WD XT struts in the rear and it doesn't drag its butt anymore, and I haven't noticed any tire wear yet... (Although I would really really like to slam my wagon, but not if it's going to eat tires..) -
Are the starters the Same?
Hondasucks replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Just FYI, the "round metal thingie" is called a "contact disk" if I remember correctly :-P I've gotten a few from the local rebuilders more than once (When you go through a really deep mud puddle in your subie, and you get muck inside the starter, the contacts don't like to work anymore ) -
What grade of gas are YOU using?

Excessive rear tire wear
Hondasucks replied to wb51286's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had the same thing happen to my 90 Legacy wagon, but it was only on one tire in the rear.... but it wasn't alignment issues, it was 3-4 pounds of mud packed inside the rim from WCSS8 -

Or if we went the entire WEEK without buying gas.. I haven't been using much since I've been out of work, I need to get my bike fixed lol... or at least get a motorscooter thing :-P -

New Thread, 4wd doesn't work 86 GL
Hondasucks replied to TheMeatWagon's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My old 84 GL wagon that I had, I ended up having to drop the diff with both axles still attached to get the pins out (I didn't yet have the cool axle pin tool) and one side came out fine, but the other side was so rusted that I had to cut the joint in a few pieces with a side cutter to get it off :-P That was a PITA! -
I think he'd do well with it bone stock.. Take it from me, kids don't need a lot of power until they learn to control notalotta power :-P Also, when he wants to upgrade, you can make a father/son project out of putting a lift in it, etc.. Also better to get what you have running good before you start doing upgrades...

3AT peeps: I need help. Sort of important.
Hondasucks replied to Nug's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That big shaft that doesn't move is the Stator Support.. That's interesting, because the stator support sticks out and just covers more of the input shaft (larger of the two middle shafts) and the oil pump drive shaft (little skinny shaft) but those two shafts aren't any longer, just the stator support.. weird.. You MIGHT be able to swap the stator support, but it's been a while since I've had a 3AT apart... -
I've got a 92 Dodge Ram that I usally take in the mountains, since my 82 4x4 is currently dead. Is that GTI with the diesel engine, by chance a GTD? Or did someone swap the diesel into it? I heard about the GTD when I had my Rabbit, supposedly they had a 120 HP intercooled turbodiesel, instead of the non-turbo 53 HP that the regular diesel rabbits had.. I miss that car (Esp. with gas being $3.17 at Arco here...)
