  1. That's weird, cuz there usually are two or three sensors, plus an arming sensor that is usually mounted in the center console or somewhere else close to the SRS control unit. Deployment requirements vary, but most of the stuff I've read is either two of the three sensors (typically one on each corner of the frame in the front, and one in the center, usually on the radiator support or the firewall) must close siultaneously, or one sensor and the arming sensor (I don't think all systems use an arming sensor, most newer ones do) And when I set the air bags off in our 93 Sable my parents used to have, they had to replace ALL the sensors AND the damn computer in addition to the air bag units themselves (Somethign about the possibility of the computer being damaged and had that they had to replace it for liability reasons) ended up being almsost 3 grand! Cuz basically they are supposed to deploy in similar conditions to hitting a brick wall at 14 MPH
  2. man just hook that thing up to ported vacuum (so the valve will open it higher throttle openings, but will be closed at idle and at WOT, like it should, this is what they did before they had computer controls) or just unplug the EGR valve and plug the line, worst that'll happen is it'll run hotter and you'll have to run a cooler thermostat and/or retard your timing a bit, but I've never had any EGR problems on my 87 and it's disconnected. (Broke the hard line pulling the head, and didnt' feel like paying out the tailshaft for a new one from the dealer)
  3. yeah HC is unburned fuel. High HC + High CO would indicate a rich mixture, high HC w/ normal or low CO would indicate a lean mixture. High 02 would confirm this. You could have a plug that's not quite firing at low RPM, or something to that effect that's causing it to misfire at idle, maybe not enough to detect but enough for it to not pass smog. We just covered emissions in class, our AllData software doesn't even HAVE the data for California, it says that since it changes so often it's best to call CARB lol Try different plugs, maybe wires and cap/rotor, and run a bottle of SeaFoam down the intake, might help.
  4. lol here it's $9 for title tranfer, reguistration goes off the original retail price, ($35 for one year for my 68 Polara) , adn if it's older than a certain age you can come in with a bill of sale (notarized) and they'll swap the title for ya, or so I've heard.
  5. P0340 - Camshaft Position Sensor A Circuit (Bank 1 or single sensor) MAke sure your CPS is plugged in and the wires are in good shape
  6. yeah and sometimes by the time we get our cars the owner's manual is long gone...
  7. it could be piston slap, or a wrist pin, although an ovaled or collapsed piston skirt would cause it to slap when cold, might be just bad enough to make it not get quite enough compression on a cylinder or two, not sure just a guess. Do a compression check on it with it cold, and do another when it's hot, see what you come up with.
  8. Once the Fuel Trim monitor sees the lean condition is gone under the same conditions (engine load + RPM, called a "window") three times in a row, it will shut the CEL off, and the code will be cleared after 40 warm-up cycles (warm up cycle is defined as the coolant temperature rising 40 degrees above startup temperature AND rising to at least 160 degrees) also, unhooking the negative cable MIGHT turn the MIL off but it WILL NOT clear the codes, as they are in Non-Volatile memory.
  9. Not sure on cost, but if you have them disable the air bag, or at least find out how to disable it (Usually it's disabled by disconnecting the battery for a set amount of time, can be anywhere from 5 minutes to 3 hours or more) but once it's disabled you could probably do it yourself if it is in fact the clock spring. (ABS computer codes would tell you) Just have to make sure it's centered or it will break. If I had to guess on a price, I'd probably guess somwhere in the 100-300 dollar range...
  10. buy it back and fix it, or like they said find a good shell, but our cars are old enough that a branded title doesnt' do much to hurt it's value, I'm sure Mike could get $1500+ for his 87 GL with or without the branded title :-P It's when you have a 2001 Outback witha branded title that the value plummets...
  11. man is this like wreck your Subaru week or something? this is like the fourth post I've seen in the last week of someone gettin slammed in their Subie :-( I hope I'm not next.. maybe I should drive the truck lol...
  12. File a claim and if they don't pay, threaten legal action, worked for me
  13. it's not HONDAS SUCK it's HONDASUCKS lol I was way against Hondas when I joined the board, and now I'm just anti-rice (and before you get all hostile, go to http://www.anti-rice.com and look @ some of da cars on there...) but kept the name cuz it's ME
  14. man I needa scoop and a BOV and some other goodies for my car Where'd ya get the scoop?
  15. I NEED a block heater for my Subaru, adn my truck came stock with one (Diesels are a little bit more of a pain to start when they are cold) The manual for my truck says the heater is not required above 40 degrees, and it's recommended between 0 and 40, adn it's required below zero, although the other morning it was -9 and it started up just fine (Had to cycle the manifold heater a couple of times) But I just went to Wal Mart and got a $20 outdoor timer, and a big arse extension cord (ended up getting TWO of the dang things since my heater cord broke, and it's $30 for a new cord from the dealer, or $6 for an 1875W extension cord from Wally World :-) (Oh, and my heater draws 1800W, so I wish that stupid heater drew the 400W the Subaru heaters draw!)
  16. Check the connection to the mass air flow sensor, the one on Jessica's car was loose and made it surge...
  17. Have them do a leak down test, and a compression test, if they insist on it beign a valve. Labor for that would be cheaper than labor to tear the head down. Also, a flashing CEL means that a condition exists that will harm the catalytic converter (Usually a misfire, meanign raw fuel is exiting the cylinder). When raw fuel hits the cat, it burns, causing the cat to overheat, and even catch fire! Usually though it just melts the catalyst, clogging the cat and causing the car to run poorly/die becuase of too much backpressure. So if it stays flashing for a while, look at your cat and see if it's glowing or looks real hot, if so shut the car off before it burns to the ground lol
  18. I know I'd be :slobber: over your car, but then again I have more respect for the old schoolers than the newer gen people (Like I'd have more respect for a guy with say an 89 Civic with an H23 VTEC that he put in himself, than for the guy with an 02 Prelude that some rich kid paid a shop to put a JDM type R motor into. I just have more respect for people who do things themselves, I mean any idiot can go down to Joes House or Rice and plunk down $20 grand to make their Civic do 12s, but how many people out there can do it themselves? How many people out there could get 230 HP out of an EA82? Not many, which is why I also say thuck fem and when they salk thit, show em what's up at the drag strip
  19. ouch... I wish I had pics of my EA82 that I grenaded (still ran on three cylinders with a big hole in the block!) but it wasn't as bad as either of those...
  20. the problem with the Subaru air suspension, is that the platform the bag rides on, the paint wears off of it, causing it to rust, which in turn rubs through the bag, Solution is to clean the rust off so the surface is smooth again, and coat it with some silicone grease, repeat once or twice a year and it should be fine. Air suspension DOES wear out though eventually, just like tires do :-) But the technology has come a LONG way since the 80s-early 90s!
  21. hey, that Prolong stuff works! Added some to my 87 hatch (first soob *sniffle*) and you could see the difference on the end of the dipstick (could feel it too) dunno if it helped the internals any, but hey any reduction of friction at start up time is fine by me!
  22. MAn it;s bad enough those darn towel heads (or are they "sheet heads"?") are over there blowing up our boys, but to top it off they use SOOBS grrr that really gets my blood boiling!
  23. 343,000 -- 84 DL wagon 319,000 -- Jessica's car (not original heads) 260,000 -- my old hatchback (first subie) I still have the engine, still has 175 psi in all 4 cylinders, and runs like a champ! but the most mileage I've ever heard of: TAlked to a guy who knew of another guy who worked for an RV manufacturer, adn he had a 93 Doge Ram 350 that he used to haul trailers around the country with, and at 1,030,000 miles his odometer broke! (This was a Cummins Turbo Diesel with a manual tranny) Read an article in AutoWeek about a guy who bought a 54 Packard off the lot in 53, and he still has it, has 540,000 on the car, transmission is due for its third rebuild but the motor has never been touched aside from replacing the aluminum head with a cast iron head after a few months when the original one warped (Common problem with the straight eight) Saw last night on Rides a 1930 something Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud (I think it was a silver cloud.. Silver something lol) that was ALL ORIGNAL, and it was the first one made.. Insured by R-R for 40,000,000 bucks, and it had over 500,000 miles on it and it had NEVER BEEN OPENED UP! had nothing done but maintenance!
  24. 70 to 73.. I almost got a 70 or a 69 1/2, maybe it was a 70 1/2 can't remember.. Stupid junkyard guy just thought it was a "worthless old Subaru" adn it got crushed THE DAY BEFORE I came out there to pay him the $100 he wanted for it :-( All it needed was a dent popped out in the front fender, a set of turn signals, a carb, and interior work, and one of the rear quarter windows, everything else was there....
  25. this is my old 87 *sniffle* I ended up having to put square lights on it cuz I couldn't find any in the JY with round lights after I got hit :-( And I wasn't into posting on the board yet (Man, I should have been, prolyl coulda gotten a set of lights AND a tranny for my 77....) (No, the busted out turn signal in this pic isn't from that, THAT one is from someone backing into my friend who used ot have the car, before I bought it. Never did find one....)
