  1. If you get ahold of an FSM, and the tools to set the ring gear backlash and the bearing preload, you could do it. The play indicates that the side bearings are going out. you MIGHT be able to prolong it's life by tightening the preload adjusters (they surround the shaft, it's a toothed ring with a retainer...) turining each side in abotu 1/2 turn each until you feel it tighten, and then back off prolyl 1/8 to 1/4 turn (You don't want it too tight) it should take up some of the slack but I make no guarantees. Manuals arent' that hard to rebuild, the hypoid differential makes it kinda difficult, cuz those bearings and the gears will last about 100 feet if not set up right :-) Your best bet is to just find a JY transmission, as those 4 speeds are fairly easy to come by.
  2. You could just get a cluster out of a manual transmission car, it woudln't have the indicator, and I dont' think they'd know the difference at the inspection station!
  3. <QUEER MODE> OMG That ith tho thuper! I got my hair done the other day and let me tell you it looks tho fabulouth... I got the KEEutest purth the other day too it ith tho thuper looking </QUEER MODE> lol sorry couldn't resist.. and to those who might be offended: Remember, queer means weird! And since when is F A G a bad word...
  4. The altitude compensator should automatically open above a certain altitude, it should be disengaged at your altitude. If the car states that "this vehicle has been modified for principal use at high altitude" than it has been modified as such, but I am not quite sure exactly what that modification entails.
  5. I saw teh Roof of Boom before over on http://www.beaterz.com (Surprised none of Fox's rigs ever made it on there... Although he was on colleghumor.com if I'm not mistaken..) on a AMC Eagle.. The front license plate had a "BASS" dummy plate, and there were some stick on letters on the bumper, so it said "All your BASS are belong to us"... Styles, that is one Pimptacular subaru.. I'm gonna do something simiar with my turbowagon, but dont' worry, I ain't gonna copy ya I sold my bodykit :-( gotta find anudder...
  6. You are probably right, Skip, although couldin't you theoretically built a circuit to pulse that duty solenoid on, say, a 90% duty cycle.. OR better yet, use a 555 Timer and some beefy power transistors to make a sort of a variable center diff.. Wouldnt' want to leave it on too long or you;'d prolyl burn up the transfer clutch though... And by FWD switch, I was referring to the FWD fuse.. Some later ones had a swtich under the hood.. You could wire the switch into that fuse holder, so 2WD mode used the ECU, instead of just cutting power to the transfer clutch solenoid. If you knew what the TCU was looking for, it wouldn't be all that hard to fool it so you didn't get a code with the transfer solenoid disconnected... If you wanted to really get into it, you could hook the shift solenoids up to toggle switches, and the TCCC up to a switch, so you can shift gears manually, and lock and unlock the torque converter (unless those don't use a computer-controlled TC Clutch.. (TCCC = Torque Converter Clutch Control).. Man I am on a roll here, I should post when I'm tired more often :-)
  7. ahhh ok I got it now.. I used to want one of those until I found out what engine they used. Peugeot V6.. The oil pump uses STEEL gears, but the housing the gears ride in, is cast into the aluminum block... Score the pump, and you scrap the block... Also found in Peugeots with the V6, and the Volvo 760...
  8. If you really wanted to get inventive, you could put a 3 posistion switch on that solenoid.. Flip the switch one way, and it locks it in 4WD, switch it the other way, and it locks it in 2WD, put it in the middle and you have normal FT4WD operation. I dunno if those have a FWD switch like the Legacies do or not, but if they don't, the 2WD mode would be useful if you ever have to run a different size tire in an emergency.
  9. Grrr stupid computer!!!! Logged out, logged in as ME, and I post as Jessica.... weirdness...
  10. Yeah Bratsco, only cuz you wanna go to the nudie beach :-P Maybe we can stop at Crown Point and get a picture of all our soobs overlooking the gorge, that'd be cool :-) It's a slight trek off the freeway, but it's worth it especially if it's clear.
  11. if you are really desparate you could try a bottle or two of that "Block Seal" stuff, it comes in a copper and black can. Basically you drain it out completely, mix this stuff with water, pour it in, let it run for like, 20 minutes or something (Add water if necessary) and then you empty it out again, and then run it again for like 5 minutes with it empty, and it bakes the sealer in.. **NOT** a permanent repair, but I'm sure it would help if you need some way to get to work... Sounds like a H/Gasket or a blown head to me... What's the oil look like???
  12. I have seen a GL 4WD wagon, non turbo, with a 3.900 LSD, it's here in town. Some guy was out driving it around, bragging about the LSD his mom ordered it new wiht back in 88... Meeky.. Too bad you aren't closer, I have RX checkered interior :-)
  13. You;d do that with just a 5 speed. Although my Turbowagon 0WNS when it comes to civics :-) The 5 speed swap is not all that hard... (Correct me if I leave anything out...) but here is what you need: Pedal assembly (all 3 pedals, bracket, etc...) Clutch cable Clutch return spring (Get off of a DL, those did not have the hill-holder) Flyhwheel, clutch, and pressure plate (Must be 4WD!) Flywheel bolts Transmission Here is where I am not quite sure, but on the EA81 cars, you have to change out the transmission crossmember and the crossmember brackets, but I don';t know on an EA82. You'll also need teh console piece that goes aroudn the shifter. You can swap in a dual range, for that you'll need the whole console as the PB and DR consoles are different. I swapped my 87 Turbowagon over from a PB 5 speed to a DR 5 speed out of an RX.
  14. I have heard that the MPFI and Turbo use the same ECU, and on one of the two, two pins are connected at teh computer to load the Turbo fuel map. (hmmm.. maybe If I wired that to a transistor, wired to the boost light, so that the ECU only went into Turbo mode after the turbo kicked in, I wouldn't get such crappy mileage.......)
  15. You might want to think about putting a cover on there, timing belts don't like road debris. Also, just because the timing belts were just done, doesn't really mean squat. Flowmaster had put new belts on his wagon when they put the new motor in it, but he used some off-brand belts, and they snapped on him like, 10,000 miles later or something like that. If you need a good odo, I have an EA82 instrument cluster...... One is a Turbo cluster with a dead oil pressure gauge (I think it just needs some tweakign cuz it sits WAY below 0 when off, but rises to a hair above 0 when at idle.), the other is a non-turbo cluster that works fine. If I lived closer I'd loan her my Rabbit, but I don't quite trust it bringing it down there as it is not a real good highway car (Diesel 4 speed.. Tops out about 70)
  16. The 85 RX that Richie had that he parted out, only said "RX" on the rear panel that says "4WD TURBO", adn it was in the corner, The sticker had faded adn you had to hit it with the light just right to see the "RX", it didn't say "RX" on the doors like the newer ones...
  17. It actually wasnt' that cold, I had just like, fired it up and drove it to the gas station and back. It wasn't fully warmed up, but it wasn't cold.. I know better than that lol
  18. yeah those are usually the ones from Makoto.. those guys have HORRID customer service.
  19. Mom's new digital camera records like, 45 seconds of video with it's 16MB onboard memory, so I recorded a short (20 seconds or so) video of me sitting in my driveway revving my Turbowagon... It's not TOO big (1.38 MB) View it here: http://usmb.net/gallery/album170 Those of you with dialup, I made a second movie that's only like 200 K or so.. But if you have the time or broadband, download teh bigger one :-) And turn your speakers up :-)
  20. Well, I wired my fan in my EA81 wagon this way, and you know what happened? The wiring melted and stunk up my car after the fan had been on for abotu 20 minutes so I had to rewire the whole shindig....
  21. Check your coil, it might need replacing. Also check with your voltmeter to see if it's getting enough voltage. With the engine running, put one lead of the voltmeter on the + terminal of teh battery, and the other on the + terminal of the coil, you should see no more than 1/2 volt. If you see any more than that, check the wiring to the coil, and the connections on the coil, see if they are corroded. Also, your coil might be wired backwards. The yellow wires should be on the (-) side and the black wires should be on the (+) side of the coil.
  22. Russ, I *THINK* that the EA71 and EA81 seats attach in teh same manner, but I am not sure if teh rails are teh same width. I do know that EA81 and EA82 seats attach in a totally different manner, AND the rails are farther apart. Either way, I know how to make adaptors like I did on my hatchback, since I had EA82 seats AND an EA82 center console in it :-)
  23. That might be a JDM crate motor, which would have a higher output than it's US counterpart. While it migth still use the US fuel system, it could have bigger valves, different cams, etc... The EJ25 heads will NOT bolt directly on to an EJ22, although the bolt holes line up, from what I've read anyway, the water passages and some other stuff like that do not, and the EJ25 has a larger bore, which would probably lead to some clearance issues... Go check out http://www.legacycentral.org, good tech articles. Mainy deals wiht the Legacy Turbo, but it does have some non-turbo info. Also, bbs.legacycentral.com (might be bbs.legacycentral.org...) has a good legacy board.
  24. yeah they're just casting marks. Nothing to worry about, but if they really bother you, you can sand them off and polish the covers. Over on the Camaro board Russ was showing me an article on polishign aluminum. I dunno where it is but you could find it @ http://www.thirdgen.org
