So, how do YOU install a transmission?
Hondasucks replied to TROGDOR!'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
"At that point it's time to go inside and drink some beers" The trick is to have the beer outside while you're workin, just not to much, cuz drunkenness and heavy car parts don't mix. Also, about putting the T/C on before you put the tranny in, it is essential that you do it this way and MAKE SURE it is ALL the way into the tranny, and fully engaged with the hydraulic pump stuff, otherwise, you run the risk of destroying the hydraulic pump. It's harder to do on a Subaru, where the "front pump" is actually in the BACK of the transmission, driven off of a shaft instead of driven directly off a drive lug on the T/C like a RWD tranny is. -
engine pinging/knocking problem with EA82
Hondasucks replied to mnorton's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The EGR valve is on the back side of the intake manifold. It's got a big round vacuum diaphragm on it. Run a bottle of Chevron Techron through it, should help. Also, when you set your timing, you disconnected and plugged the vacuum advance right? 20 degrees seems awful high, mine is supposed to be 12 degrees I beleive (EA82T) -
where to get EA82 weber adapter?
Hondasucks replied to Snowman's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've also heard that the EA82 uses the same style of carb baseplate (I.e, same size) as the older Datsuns, so if they don't show an EA82 adaptor, one from a Datsun should work. Also, on the air filter issue, I used a tall filter with my weber with no problems, but that was on an EA81. I suppose I could drag my EA82 manifold to my Datsun buddy's house and test-fit one of his carbs... -
Putting an A/T in neutral while stopped?
Hondasucks replied to TROGDOR!'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
First off, when you "stall" the torque convertor, such as at a red light, it generates heat. Putting it in neutral causes it to not stall the converter, so it won't build up heat. (In fact, if you take an auto tranny, put it in Drive, hold the brakes and mash the trottle, (called a Stall test, if the engine RPM doesn't go above about 1500 RPM you are OK, but if it jumps up to 3-4000 RPM, you know your tranny is slipping) for about 30 seconds, the fluid will get so hot it will boil, and shoot the dipstick out :-) Dont' do it, it will cook the tranny. Also: "The converter consists of three turbines sat in the same oil filled housing. One is spun by the engine, one is attached to the trans oil pump, and the last drives the trans input axle. The second two tend to follow the first, with roughly 3% loss in the oil" Not entirely true. A T/C does consist of three turbines, the impeller, which is attached to the crankshaft, the turbine, which is attached to the input shaft of the transmission, and the stator, which is what does the torque multiplication. The hydraulic pump is driven off of the torque converter housing itself. Where the housing goes into the transmission case, there is a lug that drives the oil pump. Since the oil pump is driven OFF THE ENGINE, is why you can't push-start an automatic, since it requires hydraulic pressure, generated by the pump, to engage the gears. -
what is up with my turbo?
Hondasucks replied to MilesFox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check your ignition coil, we had a car at school that would run and idle fine, but as soon as you got it above about 2500 RPM it would fall on its face. -

Hondasucks replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Beginning to think you should have kept that hatch Russ.... But yeah, the EA81 rods are too long :-( -
That's a familliar pic, that's the one I cropped PHB (Psycho Hose Beast) out of :-P

Pull the fuse for the fuel pump and crank the engine over for 30 seconds. If you can't find the fuel pump fuse, go underneath the rear of the car and disconnect the fuel pump. You dont' want to just yank teh line off because the fuel is in there at 40-70 PSI, and it will spray EVERYWHERE.

The other thing that you do, is you either go to a junkya5rd and get a downpipe, or you take yours off, and take it in to an exhaust shop, and tell them that you need one make with these flanges, but without the cat, and tell them it is for your race car, they can legally make it for "off road use only" but they can not install it.

starter difference between manual and auto
Hondasucks replied to Petersubaru's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Autos have a gear reduction starter, manuals don't. They will interchange though (with the exception of those with the vacuum module thinger) as I've had both in many of my subes. -

I need some Bogey stickers :-) all 16 lug nuts huh, well my car has 18 lug nuts on it currently (Figure THAt one out!) it's supposed to have 20 on it, but I only had 8 for the front.. Time to stop by Les Schwab and get 2 lug nuts before I run :-) -

Hey Russ, new home for the Big Block? :brow: -
Hey Ross does your wife do like, any kind of clothing or scrap book stuff? Cuz there has been a "Hosking, R" that has showed up on my caller ID that has been for my mom, and the number that shows up is an Idaho number :-P I asked my mom and she was like "Oh thats blah blah blah she's my blah blah for blah blah" (I forget exactly..) but would be one helluva coincidence if your wife like, does business with my mom :-P Also, I found a few pics of the ol' 3-door from WCSS3 I'll upload for ya when I get a chance :-)

Dealership said???? Non vs Turbo tranny
Hondasucks replied to vodoobrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes there is a difference between the two, the Turbo trannies have more clutch plates in teh clutch packs (I think it's 1 or 2 plates more than the non-turbo, forget exactly, but I *think* it is 2 extra plates for the forward clutch and 1 extra for the high/reverse clutch and the low/reverse brake.) Either way, the turbo trannies are made to handle more power but being that there is like a 30 HP difference between the turbo and non-turbo, I don't think you are going to run into any trouble. The other possible difference is that the turbo tranny might have different shift points as well as a higher flow oil pump but that is pure reasoning, I do not know for sure, but I do know for sure that the turbo tranny has a few more clutch plates than the non-turbo. -
anybody got a hood scoop?
Hondasucks replied to MaroonDuneDoom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah I need to hack out my hood and stick my hood scoop in there, and go find me a WRX I/C, need to have something for that scoop to feed :-P -
Another thing you can do to seal your ignition system, is to run a thin bead of silicone around the outside of each nipple on your distributor and then plug your wires on, that will keep water out of the connections, also do the same with your coil wire and where each boot goes over the plugs. Too bad Subaru doesn't make a diesel motor yet, those are a lot easier to water proof (No plug wires or ignition system to seal off)

"I find it really funny that I can open the door, lock it, shut the door, and then open it... I need to physically lock the door from the outside to prevent the door from being opened." Hold up on the door handle as you close teh door, then it will lock. It's a safety feature to prevent you from locking your keys in your car. Although you can close the door and lock it with the key, and the rest of the doors will lock with it. The hatch is supposed to work off the power locks 87 and newer, but for some reason my gate latch does not lock with the doors, but I think it's cuz someone put a Loyale hatch on it. I know it has the solenoid for the lock since I've pulled back the trim panel and I can see it.

Hondasucks replied to AKIRA's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...

Just gotta get this off of my mind
Hondasucks replied to PHATBRAT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah I am in the same situation wiht my 83 GL-10, I sold to my friend for $750 (GRRR, worth at least 1000) a while ago, since he needed a reliable car. Well, let's just say that he drives it like it's a firggin race car, and likes to deliver papers at like 60. So he gets mad at me cuz it needs new brakes blah blah blah new clutch etc.. The clutch was brand new, I had JUST DONE the brakes on it :madder: He offered it to me for $500, I told him $350 tops :-P -
John, dunno if you got my voicemail or not, but I haven't been able to find the video, but I did find a bunch of photos if you want them, I could bring them to you or I could scan them and post them in the album on the board. I remember rolling around @ WCSS3 with him, and I don't remember who it was, but I remember there being a guy in the car with us who owned a Subaru shop of some kind, and there was this HOTTTTT chick who was like, his daughter or something. That was cool, cuz since there was a girl in the car Jason was driving like a madman :-P Anyone remember who they were?? I'm thinking he was the guy who owns Smart Service but not sure.. Didn't get that on video cuz the stupid camcorder was dead by then :madder: :madder: :madder:
