Will this work? (air filter\hood scoop)
one eye replied to IsraBrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That looks like it will work well. The only problem is the rain, I have a weber on my brat with a 2"x16" hole in the hood. Yesterday there was water in the distr. and carb , thing would not run. But you probably don't get much rain where you're at. Looks like it will be cool. Jeff -
Is this wheel bearing noise?
one eye replied to Flakrabbit's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just went through all this stuff a while back. I had this pounding sound in the front end so I changed out the cv axles. That helped a little then it got worse. I changed out the wheel bar. on both sides, still had the sound, then I got new ball joints. Now things are smooth as glass. Jeff -
I just picked up an xt6 for 700 bones. Other than a dead batt. it's perfect except for one thing, the air bags are blown out. I was wondering how hard they are to change. I haven't even taken a look at it yet, cause I just got it last night in the dark. I hope its not to hard. Jeff

can you switch control a locking rear end in an XT and say put it in an 85 hatch.

I've wheeled the generation 1 brats my whole life, i counted it up I had 9 gen 1. They go ok but if it is an 80 it should be only in and out 4wheel drive. Like gd said restore it, keep it nice, they will be a collector car, here next year. (Thats where you can get the cool plates. If you need any part let me know i have 4 gen 1. Jeff

I guess he does have his rear end welded, and a big burley bumper on it. You might remember it, it was that dark gray one with the super swampers on it, we went up to reider pit in sultan. He had the gray one and I had the red one we had just took off before you guys went wheelin'. Anyways I've got a few gen1 brat parts, just send me a wish list and I'll see what I can't get for you. If I don't have it I'll ask around. Jeff

Yeah woodys brat is an '85, stock, fenders have been chopped and thats about it for mods on it. Its gonna be tough on it. I'm going to give him all this info, is there any thing else that he should know that is very important for this. What would You recomend to him? Jeff

Good deal I rememer you telling everyone about it, But for some odd reason I couldn't remember the details. My buddy woody just did that with his brat. He put 235/75/15 (almost the same as a 30x9.50x15)it looks real good. Do you ever have power issues with the bigger tires like that, or slipping clutch. Are there any down falls to having the big tires? Jeff

Hey general disorder, how did you set your wheels up. Where they 6 lug or 5 lug, I saw them down in bothell that one time but I can't remember how you had it set up. Jeff

Chopping the fenders on '79 is nice pain in the butt. The front ones weren't that bad, except make sure that they are tight on the bottom mine were rusted and the whole fender moved just as fast as the sawsall blade did. In the rear they are way harder. I cut mine right a long that little "finder flare thing" once you get through the first layer you have to cut through the inner fender. we just took and hit it all down with a hammer then cut it again. We ended up experimenting on the other side and we cut straight out from the tire and then folded it in. That worked way better. I didn't really put over sized wheels on it. I just had the same kind of wheels as, I think it's, mcbrats '78 brat. Those wheels you can run backwords (so more tire sticks out kinda like daytons on low riders). Then I had to smash the front fenders in so I could turn the tires all the way. I'll get some pics of it and show ya what "ulgy" means, dents, dirt, oil, grease, and paint. It's pretty bad off. Do you plan on putting 14" wheels and all that jazz on? Jeff

Right on thats a good start anyone else know.

Attn: Washington Resident. Q about lost titles
one eye replied to richierich's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm doing the same thing right now, i got a '80 brat w/ no titile, the way you can go about this is , take and send the lady a writen out deal asking her to release intrest on the car , you have to send it certified mail (signiture required). If the letter comes back and you send it 3 times you can take it to the DOL and they will have the state patrol inspect it for foul play. If all is good then you can get a 3 year title. If she just signs it over to you you should be golden. but this is kinda a time consuming deal. good luck on it, titles suck. Jeff -
What size wheel do you use to change it over to a 6 lug. I know 15 but 15x ? How wide? Are they just stock toyota wheels or Can you use after market wheels with a different offset. If you know let me know. Jeff

I welded the rear end in my '79 brat and with a 1600 or ea71 it doesn't kick the power. So mine tracked pretty straight. I'm sure your gonna do it with an ea82. But I figured I put my 2cent worth in. Jeff

To bad you arn't on the west coast, I'd get it from you right now. oh well. Jeff

gen 1 brat vs gen 2 interior room
one eye replied to snowstormer's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've had eight of the old school gen. 1 brats and just this last nov. I got an '82 wow. I'm not verticaly tall but I'm horizontally tall (250 just to boost my selfesteam really 272) and It's a heck of a lot better than the old one, but a brat is a brat gen 1 or gen 2 I'll drive it. but i do like the gen 2 more. Jeff -
Oh wow. I never knew any of that stuff. The car had bad gas in it at first we dumped gas straight down the throught. That could be a helping factor for it. The choke isn't hooked up on it, and I don't know if it is staying half or full on, that's one thing we should check. Jeff

1 I, does the engine seem to be running rich? Carb dumping ect? An overly rich mix will allow excess gas to pass to the cat where it will be burned if the AIS is working (which it sounds like it is) Did you have to "prime" the carb to get it fired? Yes we did prime the pump, and its hot wired. You think that could have something to do with it? also what is the AIS. Jeff
-
The thing is running real rich and we can't get it to run in the green on the vacume gauge. We did time it too. I had thought that there might be a chance that that thing was clogged up too. Jeff

Last night we finished putting a new motor in '80 brat. This Brat hasn't ran since 2000, and it was kind of a mess. Anyways we put it all together and let it just run to see if the fan worked. As we let it run the cat. turned orange but the car was still fairly cool. I was wondering if this was normal. I've had a few subarus before and have changed motors but I've never seen that before. What would cause this?
