I have read that procedure as well (www.alldatadiy.com), tried it a few times without success so I am going ahead and changing the chain tensioners. My mechanic is going to tackle it tonight and I have to work, so I won't be able to get an pics, but I should be able to provide some info on how he (hopefully) gets the Crank Pulley bolt off. I posted the same question on another board and this is the response i got: "You can stop the engine from rotating by locking the flywheel ring gear with a 10mm Allen Key. IIRC,the torque for the crankshaft pulley bolt is 127 Nm." Does this sound like it would work?

- Wondering if anyone knows how to remove the crankshaft pulley bolt on the H6 engine (2003 Outback), the service manual says to use a special tool, ( I assume this is something I have to buy from subaru?) or is there another method I can use? I've done a number of searches and found a lot of info on how to remove the bolt on a 2.2 and 2.5, but couldn't find anything on the H6.

As well I have noticed a humming/whining kind of noise (but almost sounds like very lightly plastic scraping) when driving (only happens in gear and with foot on the gas) noise goes away when letting off the gas or coasting down hill). Could this be a noise also caused by the timing tensioner problem? Or does this sound like it might be a front differential/or transmission gear issue? - Sorry for all the posts, I forgot that I could just editing the existing. *** So here are the details after looking at the car on the hoist: - humming noise/whining noise is coming from the front Differential, actually when you put a screw driver up to the front differential and put your ear against it, it sounds more like a grinding noise. My question now is can you buy a used Front differential or does it simply come with the transmission? Would I be better off rebuilding the front Differential? Fluid level was full, I will drain and replace fluid and see if noise changes at all first.

Also, does anyone know a list of the parts I will need for this job? Searched the threads and couldn't find any info or procedure on the replacement process, going to get my private mechanic to do it, but he has never replaced a chain/tensioners on a subaru before was hoping I could print him off some kind of directions just incase.

Just purchased a 2003 Outback H6, with 127,000 Miles. Purchased the vehicle about 12 hours away from where I live, had the subaru dealer in the area I bought it take a quick look before I drove the car home, and it's making a slight ticking type of noise at idle. The dealer told me I needed to replace the timing chain tensioners, which is approx ($200 in parts) + about 5-6 hours of Labour. They told me I don't need to change the timing chain. My question is does this make sense? Or should I replace the chain as well. They told me they can replace the tensioners without having to remove the chain/set timing again. Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanks a lot for all the info everyone. Yes I am located in Halifax, NS, Canada. I am looking at importing a 2003 from the US. Once I get the car back to canada, the car must meet the following (or I must apply modifications to meet the following): Recall clearance letter (This should not be a problem) ü The vehicle must bear a manufacturer's valid U.S. statement of compliance label at the time of importation. ü The Registrar of Imported Vehicles will mail a Canadian statement of compliance label to you after passing the federal inspection. ü Valid alpha-numeric 17-digit VIN ü Metric speedometer and odometer labels (provided by inspection centre) ü Daytime running lights ü Child restraint tether anchorage hardware kit ü Child restraint tether anchorage point locations (refer to Admissibility List) ü 8 km/hour bumpers (refer to Admissibility List) ü French supplementary restraint system label for airbags that require periodic Anyone have any ideas if I might have to make any changes to an 2003 Outback sold in the US to meet the above conditions?

Looking at buying a 2002 or 2003 Outback. Is there any major differences between the years? Any thing specific I should look out for? Currently going to look at an 2003 Outback H6 with leather and dual sunroofs. Anything different about this motor that I need to ask? Also what is the difference between the Limited Model, LL Bean Model, and say an H6 with all options? Any help is greatly apreshiated. I currently own a 96 Legacy Outback with the 2.5, and before that a 99 Legacy outback with 2.5, luckily I never ran into any head gasket issues.

I havn't bought it yet, just found a good deal on the right side sensor, just wanted to be sure before I bought it. The ebrake shoes fell apart inside the wheel and it chewed the abs sensor into pieces. I guess I will just keep looking around for a decent deal on a left side sensor, as subaru price seems to be $310.00 Thanks for all the info.

1996 Legacy Outback Wagon 2.5 Is there any difference in the Right Rear and Left Rear ABS sensor? Dealer told me the parts are different (they give different part numbers). Found a good deal on a right rear used abs sensor, but I actually need the left one. Someone else is telling me infact they are the same, wondering if anyone else might have any ideas.

Had a friend help me take it apart, it was the parking brake, everything came loose inside the shoes were just sitting in there, and the springs were everywhere. It ended up destroying the abs sensor and another abs part I forget the name for. Anyways removed the shoes for now and everything is working fine just have no parking brake until I get the new shoes put on.

I think I was wrong about the brakes, the sound came again so I pulled over and jacked up the wheel and when I try to turn it, it's very hard to turn and scrapes as I turn it. (wondering if anything else would cause scraping noise when doing this?) Then I noticed the ABS light came on, and when the noise kicks in it feels like the car is braking, unless something else is just putting resistance and causing it to feel like that. So I'm now thinking a seized caliper. Anyone else have any other thoughs?

Have a 96 Legacy Outback auto. Randomly when going over bumps will hear a loud clunk followed by a harse grinding noise which will last 30 seconds to a minute then go away. Has only happened a few times. Sound seems like it's coming from the rear drivers wheel. Quick check of the brakes and they look okay, could this be a symptom of a wheel bearing or any other things I should look for?

96 Subaru Legacy Outback 2.5 Just purchased the car seems to have an idling problem Here's the issue: (Idle problem is the same when car is cold or warm, makes no difference) Sometimes it will idle normal when you come to a stop. Sometimes it will idle at a very low RPM like it's almost going to stall but never does. The idle does not seem to flucuate either it idles normal or it idles low until you start moving again. When it's idling low and you start to take off again you get a slight hesitation when you hit the gas. Once when I was at a stop light the rpm dropped the lowest i've seen it and the AT Oil temp light flashed on once for about 1/2 second then went off, wondering if this means anything or if maybe it was just because the car was about to stall. Wondering if anyone has any ideas or suggestions? I was thinking replace air and fuel filter and then move on to plug and wires? But not sure if there is anything else I should look for
-
Finished installing the Plugs and Wires, was a fairly straight forward job. Car does seem to idle perfect now no more stalling. Still though when driving there is a slight hesitation here and there, not anything near before, so i'm thinking there still might be something else that's causing more trouble. Air Filter did look dirty, so I'm going to try replacing that as well as the fuel filter on monday and go from there.
-
Thanks for all the suggestions. The car now seems to be hesitating when driving. I have plugs and wires and i'm going to try and do the job myself today. If that fails then i'll probably check the fuel filter, and possibly the coil. Does anyone know any good sites that show you instructions on how to get at the plugs in this car? I found this one, but i'm not sure if they will be the same instructions for my vehicle http://www.scoobymods.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3017&highlight=spark

Just picked up a 1999 Subaru Legacy AWD Wagon with 165K(KM) (100K Miles) to use as my winter car. (Stored my Lexus SC400 for the winter) Car worked great for about the first 4 days I had it, then all of a sudden it started stalling at idle and giving a slight hesitation when driving. Check engine light does not come on so it's not giving any codes. I took it to the Subaru Dealer today and they came up with the following suggestions: Replace Spark plugs, Plug Wires, Value Cover Gaskets, and Coil for a total cost of about $1100 (CAD) I'm in Canada taxes in for parts and labour at the dealer and it should fix the problem. Wondering if there is any suggestions on maybe what I should try first rather then replacing everything, or anything else I can look for. I was going to try and change the plugs myself and see what happens, and was wondering if anyone has or knows of a site that has instructions on replacing the plugs in the 99 2.2L . Just really don't want to put $1100 into this car right off the get go, since I don't have the cash, and only going to be driving this car for a couple months. (I have search the forums, but I must not be typing in what I need, as I can't seem to find anything) Sorry I don't know much about these cars, I'm normally a lexus guy, have owned an LS400 and SC400, but bought this car because the SC400 just isn't safe to drive in the winter, drove it last year with new winter tires and still seemed to get stuck every storm. Any suggestions on places to buy parts other then the dealer? This would need to be a place that is either in Canada or ships to Canada, As I'm in Halifax , NS, Canada
