  1. The first place I'd look for something like that is the Owner's Manual. What's it say?
  2. Ugh. I certainly believe you that the design life of a cat is 100k, but it would sure be nice if it were more. Since they cost so much and all. Do you know what company makes the JC Whitney cats for them?
  3. Whining? I hate whiners. If I were you I'd slap it good and tell it to STFU and GBTW. But really, it might be just one of those things that you choose to ignore, especially if you have tried other fluids and additives with no help. Unless you want to change the pump, which is not warranted in my opinion. Lots of them make noise like that with no other ill effects.
  4. Righto, paintbrush, spray, whatever. Just for fun I checked out the price of a 55 gallon drum of this stuff: $3881. I'll pass, not like I'm restoring railroad boxcars or anything.
  5. http://www.por15.com/ This is very good stuff. Also a rust convertor. "POR-15" When using this type stuff, pour out a little bit into a separate clean container like a disposable paper cup and use it out of that, and don't return the used portion to the original container, because getting rust crud in the product can ruin it. Activates it or something like that, I don't know, I'm no paint scientist.
  6. The VIN breakdown is like this: 1 manufacturer 2 manufacturer 3 manufacturer 4 line 5 body type 6 engine type 7 model 8 restraint type 9 check digit 10 model year 11 plant of manufacture and transmission type 12 sequential 13 sequential 14 sequential 15 sequential 16 sequential 17 sequential This is from the factory manual on my 00 OBW; yours may vary.
  7. Not really. Lots of people do their own brakes. Also, lots of morons get paid to do brakes! It ain't rocket surgery.
  8. The least they could do is take your pads out and inspect them, and inspect all other rear brake components. What they SHOULD do is replace the rear pads.
  9. ONE thousand dollars, maximum, IF you clean the inside real nice and do the windows too and fill the tank. Sorry, but it's the rust and the high KMs. This is my opinion!
  10. I also agree on the fact that the front o2 sensor is old and probably could be replaced, however be aware that the P0420 code relates specifically to the rear sensor.
  11. Tech Manual tranny noise troubleshooting section: [K100] 3-1 DIAGNOSTICS 1. Manual Transmission 3. Unusual noise comes from transmission. NOTE: If an unusual noise is heard when the vehicle is parked with its engine idling and if the noise ceases when the clutch is disengaged, it may be considered that the noise comes from the transmission. (a) Insufficient or improper lubrication. Lubricate or replace with specified oil. ( Worn or damaged gears and bearings NOTE: If the trouble is only wear of the tooth surfaces, merely a high roaring noise will occur at high speeds, but if any part is broken, rhythmical knocking sound will be heard even at low speeds. Replace. ===== Check the fluid level!
  12. Not completely convinced the P0420 is relevant to the idle problem, but hey, what do I know. Does your car have an idle air control valve? It might be worth your time to clean it, if so.
  13. Corrosion on the battery cables? That's the first thing you should have checked.
  14. Perhaps instead of "dead" I should have said "discharged" in reference to the battery. Most likely it will charge back up when the defect is corrected. You can make sure all the fuses are good and that the battery cables and big red wires under the hood are in good shape and connected properly. I don't know if there's any fuses in the charging circuit, but I doubt it. If you jump it to start it, then turn the headlights on, then remove the jumper cables, do the headlights dim a lot right when you disconnect the jumper cables? If so, this would indicate a bad alternator. edit spelling
