I´m not completely secure about that, but I preffer to Disconnect and close the EGR and it´s Linkage... Let me Explain: I have repaired too many Subies, from Friends, Friends of Friends, etc... and I saw two different ways where the EGR is working in EA82´s, one of those directly disturb one cylinder´s combustion; so if you just Close capping the Vacuum Hose that coming from the Carb, as long as any other involved in the EGR process, the EA82 first will become more Stable and will Idle and Accelerate more Powerfully and SOFT, and passing the time, the idle will become more quiet too... I Know that has somethin´ to do with carbon deposits, Cylinder Pressure... Etc... as long with correct timin´ but I don´t wanna explain all of this here, I just wanna Add that if you are sure you CAN dissable the EGR (Due to Emmissions Restrictions) DO IT! and Cap the Remainin´ Vacuum Hoses. Back in Thread... I just wanna add that for Off Road use, I think the Better Engine is the EA82 with a Weber, ´cos the Weber Carb increases the power at lower R.P.M.´s and due to it´s Linkage, you can put all the power just by depressing the gas Pedal to the Bottom... Here, in Honduras, one time long time Ago, but not Long Long time Ago, I saw a Muddy / Rocky competition (Here are some Off Roadin´ Clubs) where a Subaru Brat did participate, it was a nice grey 1986 Brat with a EA82 using a Weber Carb, and at low range, you can hear the engine (Not the exhaust) Soundin´ like a Tractor Engine... It was Awesome, the Subie did not win... but finished second at that time... Well... I saw that competition in person, but I just can see every other competition only by one of Our local TV Channels, due to my Job... I Hope I can get one day a Brat, and Lift it, and Put a EA82 Weberized in It... Well, I Prefer the EA82 Weberized than any turbo engine, for the same reasons already explained by TheSubaruJunkie... ... I hope this can help you. Well... First of All: Welcome! I think this is the Correct Firin´ Order on a EA82 Engine, that is the One in your 1.8 L Carbureted 1987 Subie: Where 1 & 3 are Left side (Driver´s) and 2 & 4 are Right Side (Passenger´s) To Keep Runnin´ Your Subie, Check that and the Good Condition of the Carb... but if it was good before changin´ the Spark Plugs, maybe you aren´t usin´ the Correct Ones. Remember: Spark Plugs for Subies, Shall have the letter "R" in them, that means that the Spark Plug got Resistor. I Use NGK BPR6... ( And others Sometimes ) but those are Cheap and Very Very Good. I think it is the P.C.V. ... Why don´t you take it and check it? maybe is clogged... Also a bad carburetion can do that, specially if the Smoke is Dark. if that´s Dark, Check Carb Too... Good Luck!

Here I found the Shock Absorbers of my Subies, with the Part Number and Callin´ Directly to the Shock Absorbers Shops, as Gabriel, Monroe, etc... So, I suggest to Try at: http://www.monroe.com/ or any other Maker Directly... If you couldn´t found those Easily... well... You can go to the Local YunkYard... But is better Idea to Took one of your Car´s and go with it to the Parts Shop... Maybe another one brand car´s Fit, just check the Tall of the Pin, and the mountings, etc... Good Luck!

Both my Subies got Analog Dashs... I wish I could have at least one with Digital... But let me tell you somethin´ about the Colour: I obtained Blue LED bulbs exactly shaped as the normal Dash ones, and I Used them on my White Wagon, the result is a Very Briliant Dash in blue (Just like Neon) but then, after three months I switched again to the traditional lightning, due to the extreme bright in blue, that was hurtin´ my eyes in long road trips at night. Even with the Dimmer, they were too bright or too dark... Maybe you can find LED´s not too bright to change colour in a more "Natural" way... In other hand: in your situation, I would do anything to keep my digital dash workin´ ... or use aftermarket Gauges, but not Changin´ it. Well... Good Luck!

Those sites Looks Good for me... Thanx for the Info! Well... I Found the Leds that fitted exactly instead of both my Subies´ original bulbs with no adaptation at all, just pull the Originals, and install the Led Ones, ... Here. I found them here in Honduras, in one trip I done to San Pedro Sula City, in the Car Parts Stores Area... but I found the Image in Amazon, and I think that Image is a Link to the Page were you can buy them in Amazon, Cheap. Also, I buy there the Halogens that I use in the place of normal bulbs to the Rear "Backin´" Lights... to see better at night when i´m Backin´ on my Subies... Very Cheap for 50W Halogens with a Standard bulb Base, I don´t use them in front, ´cos they´ll Fry the Plastic Lenses in Prolonged use... Back in 1996, we got the same dificults with the White EA82 Wagon... so, instead of usin´ the marks, we pulled the four sparkplugs and with a large screwdriver, by rotatin´ the Center Pulley, we stabilish where was exactly the "Top Dead Point" (As Said in Spanish) for the first Cylinder... We put the first T-Belt usin´ our own pattern, then the second by Rotatin´ one rotation crackshaft, and "Voilá" The car started and ran Good... I don´t know why, but it worked to my EA82... maybe marks wheren´t in the correct position, or maybe the Distributor had "Jumped" as said a friend mechanic that was helpin´ us -my dad & I- due to the fact that we was Running at High speed in 4th uphill when the T-Belt broked... I don´t know exactly, but maybe that can work to you... Good Luck!

... Addin´ to This, if you look Close to the New Impreza in the Rallys, it got a Four Lug Pattern too close to Subies, but just that... "Close" but wont Work. Only Peugeot did same pattern Rims, I used to have a Nice Peugeot´s on my White EA82 Wagon, they was 13" as Subie´s, then one hit an Enormous Open Hole in el Salvador Roads, it broke along with the Shock Absorber... and I only obtained another Peugeot Rim, but was 14" Instead... That´s why I decide to change the pattern on both my Subies. Is easy to change it to six lugs... (If only I knew it Before :-\ ... ) But I did mines in four Lugs, 3½ Inches, instead of the 4 inches of the Subie. Now I use on both my Subies, 13" Chromed rims, not Off Road but looks Nice! Not at All... But you can put there an Aftermarket one, I don´t know exactly which one, but I heard those sometimes are more Accurate. The purpose of the Oil Pressure Gauge is just to Monitor the oil pressure at All Times, and to check if it Drops to make somethin´ about, like change Oil, or the Pump itself, etc... it depens on the Situation, but just to Monitor the Oil Presure. For me it is very important as I have problems in the Past with my EA82 Loyale, the Tick Song rises along with the lowering Oil pump pressure, but that is another noisy kind of boxer engine, where Oil Pressure is more Critical. Well... I think that all the situation you got with your engine, are some sort of "Normal" due to the time it was sat. So, I only Suggest you to Change the Thermostat, The PCV Valve, and All the Fluids, includind the new Oil, with 20W50 Oil, due to the Fact that engine was sat too Long, and harmful deposits on the oil pan (Carter) now are in "Suspense" in the new oil, so I Strongly suggest to Drive to car to make the oil warm (Not To Hot) and then change the Oil, along with the Filter. Believe me: Is Good Idea... I have changed engines a Lot, and for Long Sat Engines is good Idea to Not Drive ´em too much with the first oil they get when restarted. Also I suggest to Change Thermostat and PCV... but maybe PCV needs just Cleaning. Please: As Long as you can Post some Pics Here! It will be Cool. Good Luck!

Well... Just for Info: I have done Almost EVERYTHING and Every Li´l thing on both my Subies since I got Them... (The White One is 1985 Weberized EA82, and the Yellow One is the "Project" with a lot of parts on it... ) From Engine Repairs, Axles, Brakes, Rim Adaptation, And a Whole Lot of etc... to the Paint Job of Both Subies. This Image is Just a few Example of It: By this I just wanna say to BEEFARU that I know how hard is to do that kind of Good Paint Jobs in a Car, And I Just wanna say CONGRATULATIONS! Your Subie Looks Amazing!!! And will Look Better when the Paint Job is Done. I can´t Wait to see more Pictures of it! ... I know the Feelin´ when you finished paintin´ and you wanna put everything back and run it NOW! ... But be carefull when reinstallin´ parts, or you can Damage the Fresh Paint... I damaged the paint of one Door installin´ the Black Trim. Very Nice and Well Done Job!!! We´ll be Waitin´ for more Images...

Yes! it is a 3.5 Watts Bulb in Average... butt Wattage may Differ... This is -or almost- the Original one. I Used there a Bike Light Bulb... Designed for Bikes, and gettin´ the power from a li´l Generator at the side of the Rear wheel, that bulbs are like this, but of around twelve watts. I used them ´cos they seems too bright in the Subies... But only last for a month or two... So that´s why I Switched to the LED bulb I show in the past Post.

well... Just to Help Everybody a Li´l Bit: My 1985 EA82 got Fire in one side boot (I don´t Remember which side, ´cos I was just twelve years old, around 1987) but it was due to one boot that "Came Out" and throwed all the Grease out, we was Goin´ in the middle of a Large 600 Miles Trip... so my Dad stop the Car and quickly put there fresh water... Then the Axle turned too noisy... We Changed it, and since that year, we use THE SAME Boots that EA82 se in the Gearbox side, at the Wheel Side. Why? Well... it was due to the extra Large size of the Internal Boots, they Last Longer as External Boots Too. So we use in Bth our Subies, just the Longer Boots in each end, no shorter ones, that make Boots to Last Longer, so Axles Last Longer Too, and Grease ALWAYS stays Inside. So, this is my Sugestion: Use the Best Grease You Can Get, (Be Sure that is Pure Graphite O.E. Aproved for Constant Velocity Joints) and the Lage Boot, along with a Pair of Nylon (Plastic) Lockin ties at EACH End. Good Luck, and be Nice with your Subaru, so it will be Nice back to You Too...

Well... I just wanna Add this: I Use a Whole Different Kind of Bulb there, one almost like this: (But with Shorter Head) It Glows in Neon White, so my Subies seems to have some sort of Neon There... Not exactly the Neon you imagine, t seems to be the House´s Neons in there... but it fit there Perfectly when I was usin´ the "Blue" 9004 Bulbs... Now I Know that those blue lights don´t help to drive safer, instead the Blue Light seems White in the Car´s Lenses and don´t reflect too good in Pavement, specially in wet pavement, so I switched to 9104 Rally Bulbs in the Main Lamp, but I leave the White LEDs at the Corners... Four years since I installed them, and Counting; and No Damage to Lenses at All. So I Suggest them, ´cos they´re cheap and Leds don´t burn.

I definetively like the Legacy, specially the EJ engine... but I think that the Loyale is more Upgradable, and you can do a Better Off-Road vehicle with Loyales... Well... Answers: First of All: Shakin´ is due to Tyres: Unbalanced Tyres \ Bad Alignment / Bad Air Pressure \ or Different Kind of Tyres in Front / Rear; or Left \ Right. (Also -rarely- can be due to a Damaged Rims) So: Check if all four tyres are of the Same Kind; or Almost the Two in Front shall be the same, as the Two in Rear... but not compleately nessesary the Four, but is Highly Suggested. The A\C Belt screamin´ is Due to a Loose Belt.So: You can Try to Tighten it more, but maybe it is Old, and a Old Belt became more bigger in size, so I Suggest you to Change it. I did Suffer too much time with those crappy Belts... so after testing so many kinds, I discover the perfect belt to the A\C Unit of the EA82: This is the Number 7375 (XL) Belt from Gates Brand. (Its measurements are: 3/8" X 38-1/8" -inches- or: 9.5/10 mm X 970 mm ) Good Luck!

I´m not Pretty Sure... but maybe an Electrical connection nearby... Are you Sure you put them all back in its Place? ´cos I don´t think changin´ back the Thermostat is the Answer... I think that maybe another thing in that area is failing, like a Sensor or wrong connected plugs... So I suggest to check ´em back Again... Good Luck!
