Buying an 88 wagon.
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to TheYeti's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, but only when radiator / Thermostat gets clogged... I suggest to check `em out and clean... but still a li`l warmt is "Normal" ... at least on all EA82 I have seen... but Not Overheat. Good Luck! -
NICE IDEA!

GL/Loyale Radiator differences?
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to danbennett2u's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, me too, helpin` some friends who got subies, but my White Wagon got a "Made in Honduras" Radiator... It`s made from the frame of the Stock one, but it got Double Panel (Instad of the Single that was stock) so it can handle almost twice the amount of water, and keep my Weberized EA82 Cooler. (Remember: Here are Always tropical temps, so the U.S.A. Version cars that came here, have always the "Overheating" Behavior) So, you can put there a more Thicker radiator, but then you`ll got less space to pull the fan and work is not easier... But they swap. Good Luck! -
Weber replacement air filters?
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to A DOG's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I have searched for them... Mine is about 3" Tall, here I only found of 2" so, there`s not exactly compatibility, maybe different models... I was about to ask for a good internet site to buy them online. Anyone? -
Let's name that noise again :)

Be Soo Careful with that... Maybe it`s a Brakes Issue that can fail before. -
Carb Fuel Return Line
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to jacobs's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
With my `85 EA82 Weberized, I Did connect to each other selves the two remainin` lines: the Vent and the Return line... It did work fine, but I noticed two things: If I park my car under High Sun... the gas Gauge will lower... ...And when I open the Tank at the Gas Station, there is a Huge Amount of Vaporized gas commin` out... That wasn`t like this Before, So maybe I done it wrong, but the Question is: Where did you put the return line in the Weber? -
Just a Question

Timing is Everything!
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to Anthenium's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
You can Try with most advanced Timin` ... I got my EA82 (Weberized) with 28º ... but I know that they works fine at 25º too... it brings more quick acceleration... and with higher octane gas, and a more powerful coil (Like Accel Superstock of 45,000 volts, instead of the stock 27,000) you would not hear any valve pingin` well... it works fine for me... and for some friends that got EA82`s that I have repaired. I suggest you to try advance timin` to 23º or 25º and give us feedback about your Results. Good Luck... -
Could you post here a Photo of that? If it is located away from the main oil / water passages, maybe the answer to this is to take out the bolt, put on it Teflon tape (on its thread) and put it again in its place... ...but it can be a high pressure bolt, so I suggest to post an image here... or try with teflon... (Teflon Tape is the one we use to seal threads of water pipes, it work well with high pressure, extremly hot water, etc... even I did repair a leakin´ brake line of an Old Datsun 1,600 Pick up, of 1972 that was of my dad, so it maybe can help you... ) Good Luck!

Just for Info: Here in Honduras, Specifically in the Twin Cities that make our Capital City (Tegucigalpa & Comayagüela) I have seen a EA81 Subaru Leone Wagon 1984, runnin´ with just the rear wheels, but the rear diff. is not Subaru, is adapted from a Toyota Corolla 1982 1.8 Wagon... Complete with all stuff, even the Springs that are not coil springs, instead, the owner did weld the parts of the old Toyota, and did a welded "Mix" transmission tube, to connect the original subie gearbox, with the toyota´s diff. What do you think about? I will try to obtain pictures of it, in my next travel to capital city (Maybe next week, due to work things to do... ) Also, I saw a Subie EA81 workin´ as Taxi, with that same config. Well... this was just for Info... But Maybe is good Idea to Try...

TOD thread #245234521355
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to NewDriverOlderRide's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes! That´s It... Check your Oil Pressure... Let me tell ya Somethin´: The Oil Pump on the Subaru´s EA82 is moved by one of the Timin´ Belts, instead of the main axle of the engine, as used in almost all other engine designs, so it make an oil pump to rev. at double speed than the pistons (Valves Speed) so it only last about 100,000 Miles (About 10 Years of Use). So in mine, I just changed the Core of the Oil Pump (Oil pump Kit, that Reseals it) and the noise did go. That´s All. But in the other hand, I did help a friend with a Hatchback EA82 that was too noisy, and the previous owner did drive it like that for two or three years! ... So in that case, Along with the Oil pump change, we cleaned the Hydraulic Lifters, and that got fixed any Engine Noise. But, due to the serious wear on it´s lifters, my friend´s subie always is a li´l bit noisy when it is first started first time on the day. Or when it´s cold. then in few minutes, noise is gone. Maybe this can Help you... Good Luck! -

Well... I got the same Light Issue but with my Fog Halogens Lighted Switch... About the Dyin´ Engine Problem: I think that maybe isn´t just the fuel pump itself, maybe it´s the float level on the Carb. Have you checked it? Good Luck! -
Yes! ... It happened to me too...

First of All, Welcome to CentralAmerica. Here, the thermoswitches and thermostats are better Away from the Car... :-\ ...I mean is better to take ´em Off... Why? Here we got only two stations by year: Ice Cool or Hell (We mean the "Dusty" that is out Hot Summer, and the "Muddy" That is our rainy Winter) in Spanish: "Invierno e Infierno" you know... So, here there aren´t snow at all, so we suggest to remove all those crappy thermo things from all U.S.A. Version car that comes here... it was one of the first things done to my EA82 Subaru, back in 1985... it was Almost Always Overheatin´ ... now you know... So, the answer to your question, I believe is this: Due to the Fact that Those Subies got in the HeadLights, Always a Hot -Live- Wire (I mean, the one with positive + current, is always on) and the switch only interrupts the Ground, (-) which is divided in Two in the "Beam Stick" on the Steerin´ wheel... One for High Lights, the other one for Low Lights; I believe that your subie got a Damaged Ground on one Side... Maybe the fire did damage the main wires, or maybe did burn the ground cables... so, to repair this; I suggest to get out the Plug from the Headlights on both sides, and with the car switch in "ON" position, and headlights Off, Search on both sides with a Tester, for a Live Wire, and it shall be the same in the same position in the Plug, on Both Sides... Then, with Headlights "ON", search with a Tester, for the same ground on Plugs, on both sides... You can make a cheap tester like This: with a 12Volts Bulb and its Base, you can connect the bulb´s Negative Wire, to the Ground - of the Car´s structure, or the Minus pole on the Battery, and with the other bulb´s wire (+) you can search the Hot -Live- Wire on the Headlights Plug. Do the same but reversing polarity, to seach grounds on the Headlght Plugs. First, try one side, with the Low Beam Activated, it shall be the same position on the Other Side, and repeat the same test with High beams on... If anything is Wrong, that is where you can start to search for buned or cutted wires, and fix them up. Thats it... Good Luck!

Motor Problems
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to ()__1337_CRAYOLA__()>'s topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If P.C.V. is OK...and everything else is Checked and O.K., then Change the Valve´s Seals. This solution did work for my EA82 Carbureted GL wagon of 1985... but it´s not cheap. Let me Explain: Each of the eight valves of the Engine, got a Seal, its a sort of "O" Ring, that holds Oil from the Head, and let the Oil Stay on the Head, otherwise, in case of worn seals, two situations can occur: One: the oil can reach the pistons throught the worn seals and make the engine burn it, (In this case, you´ll see white smoke on the exhaust, when engine is forced or hot, in worst cases: Always) Two: Worn seals can let the oil to run out from the head to the carburetor, throught the 5/8" Hoses that connect the heads to the air filter box, ´cos a certain amount of pressure from the pistons, escape throught the worn seals and literally "Blow" oil to the hoses... that last one was my EA82 case... The Valve seals are made to last about 100,000 Miles, or Ten years... due to the fact that seals become Old and Dry with time, and then doesn´t work almost at all... Also: if you can see white Smoke Comin´ from exhaust only when engine is Forced... I am 99% Sure that your engine got worn seals... That it!. To change those seals, you´ll need all the Eight New Seals... And both head gaskets. I Really suggest to do a good thing with that engine: buy the entire Seals & Gaskets Kit for EA82, (There are good Japanese Cheap Aftermarket) and change all the worn seals, gaskets, etc... in only one Step... if not, you must do the "Change Thing" one by one, and that way is more expensive, needs more time... etc... So, I suggest that, because in my EA82 did work great! No white or Black or Any visible smoke or Leak at all, and it got 223,000 Original Miles so far... Good Luck! -
My Subaru is sick... :( help me!
Loyale 2.7 Turbo replied to axelg89's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Maybe you can try with another carb... You can easily swap your Hitachi carb. with a Nissan´s one, specifically with the Nissan Sentra (In some Countries is called Tsuru, Tsuru II or Sunny, or even Datsun 310, is almost the same) And try if it solves the problem... just to probe if that was the carb. or not... I used a Nissan´s Craptachi carb in my EA82 for almost two months... it ran good, but that carb was from a 1,600 straight engine, so it´s venturi was too small to my subie´s Flat 1,800... and due to that, my engine didn´t reach 3,500 RPM´s well... but let my car idle and ran fine, untill I get my Weber... Also, it´s base is almost the same of the Subie, ´cos both are Hitachis. If you wanna try the swap, I suggest you to search a nissan with 2,000 engine, it shall work better... Also some Isuzus, and toyotas used the same base Hitachi carb. Good Luck! ....... Can you Show us Pics of your Car? I´ll Love to see it. -

Welcome! Yes, it could be, but also check in the Engine compartment, there is a huge cable with a lot of wires inside, that goes from and to the engine, it maybe is loose in its connectors... (Female and Male) so it may is doing False Contact... Check it and give us Feedback about... Good Luck!
