  1. The forum said not to switch the ECU out so I did not bother. I was just happen the car turned on but its been 12K miles now. Anyone think I should sitch it to a 2.2 ECU.
  2. My 97 2.2 with 162K gets 23 MPG on average. The engine was just tuned. It is running on a 2.5 ECU though, wonder if this helps or hurts???
  3. My OBW runs in the middle. Your pics look normal. I had a blown HG with no signs of oil in the coolant. I had to get a coolant test where they checked for hydrocarbins
  4. Has she overheated? I would go to the sub dealer and get the coolant conditioner
  5. Nipper is correct, you will need a hydro carbin test. Any engine shop can do it. Think of it as this, you engine is shot or at least 1500 in repair. The car is worth 2800. You never know what else could be wrong when your engine overheats. Try the coolant conditioner from the dealer. I see you having only one option. Install a 2.2.
  6. My 98 2.2 took 8 hours with 2 people to get out. Took me 2 hours to find the access hole to undo the flywheel bolts. 5 hours to clean and reseal. 6 hours to put back in.
  7. I wanted my 98 OBW looking stock. I bought a 6 disk in-dash changer with tape deck from an 01 sub of Ebay for 130 shipped. I then bought an alpine fm mudulator for 15 bucks new off Ebay. I still need to install the modulator. I want to have a hidden plug, 100 stock
  8. So it is said let it be done. That 98 outback is worth 3,100 tops. I am sure the engine is 2.5 which means head gasket replacement in the next few years. I would not give a
  9. The world is waiting for an update on Hidden Treasure in Fresno - UPDATE AKA " As the Engine Turns " http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=64488
  10. Here is my business model, the more cash I can keep in my pocket the better.
  11. Got to be honest with you, this sounds to high. I always have to think twice when I go in for something simple and 1500 dollars later I am told everything is fixed. I recently brought my sub in for a state inspection and they wanted to replace my steering pump because it made a noise. I told them to tighten the belt and the noise was gone.
  12. Its a few bolts holding it in. Make sure to use a new belt. Also, when fillling the new pump up add the fluid slow and keep jumping back in the car and turn the wheel side to side, it does help to have someone moving the wheel for you.
  13. My 2.2 had a bad external leak. I added the 2 dollar Subaru additive and it was gone, its been 10K miles. Head gaskets for 550 is a great deal, just ask for the old gaskets.
  14. Dude, why did you buy the car if you have so many issues with it? As far as that ping noise you are hearing, yea you have piston slap. It took me well over 100K to get it. You should not have this soon, have the dealer address it.
  15. 255K, it must have the 2.2. If it had the 2.5 you would have to have pick it up at the junk yard. Good Find
  16. ahhhh Hello My 2.2 has piston slap because I can hear it. The 2.5 has head gasket issues, between me and you I would rather have piston slap.
  17. OK, what am I missing you have a 1996 Impreza 2.2l, 127,000 miles, its 10 years old and you have piston slap, why would you spend any money to get it fixed. Is it worth sinking a G into it so that noise goes away. No way.
  18. My name is Matt and I have a 160,000 on my 97 2.2 and yes I have piston slap. It is loud when it's cold but goes away when it's at temp. This is normal operating procedure, nothing to be worried about.
  19. Hold on here, your 97 2.2 does have an egr. I have done what you are doing. This ia a past post of mine Going to make this simple for you as I have done the 2.5 to 2.2 on a Legacy Outback. I used a 97 2.2. From the donor car (450 dollars tops) 1) Engine / use the exhaust manifold from the 2.2 donor 2) AC Compressor you must keep and hoses from your 2.5 mount onto the 2.2 3) Metal Power steering lines from the 2.5 move them over 4) The fly-wheel from the 2.5 will have to be moved over to the 2.2. From Subaru 1) All new exhaust gaskets (10 dollars) 2) new o-rings for the AC hoses you disconnect 3) new o-rings for the power steering lines you disconnect From Walmart 1) 2 cans of 12 oz refrigerant and a refill hose (30 bucks) While you are at it replace this on the 2.2 donor (100 bucks) an easy to do with the engine out. 1) Harmonic balancer (50 ebay) 2) AC and Alternator belts (20 pepboys) 3) Rear cam seal (5 dollars) 4) Oil Separator Plate (sure to be leaking, original is plastic) (15 dollars) 5) Rear main seal. (20 dollars) 6) Spark Plugs (10 dollars) 7) PCV Valve ( 8 dollars) 8) Valve cover gaskets (2 of these) and grommets for the bolts (30 dollars) 9) Reseal the oil-pan and replace both gaskets that are internal. (RTV temp sealer 4 bucks, gaskets are 10 bucks)
  20. "cracked piston sleeves" This would be the first that I have heard of this. I would recommend you take you car from that place ASAP and never return ever. Assume you have a blown HG until that is rulled oot
