  1. You'll struggle to get a good "old skool" mechanical LSD even in NZ (high demand from the rally boys), the viscous LSD legacy diffs (used with a ratio change) are cheaper and more common. You'll find rear disks are fairly common though. Email Richard radeon_4@hotmail.com Tell him John sent you:headbang:
  2. Found a donor car for my hatch project today, pretty tidy too, but left hand drive, so no good to me in that respect. All the panels are excellent and all lenses are perfect. There was even a twin carb set up sitting the boot with a few other bits and pieces, plus the guy also gave me a mint spare passenger door complete glass as well. Good find i rekon! It has been a rally cross car in the past, so it has basic adjustable suspension too.
  3. Ok, sounds good so far, i have a 1983 Brumby and the dashboards are out of 1983 coupes.. so there is a good chance it'll work well. I guess thats my next project on the brumby
  4. Hey matty, how easy was that dashboard swap? i have the standard one in my brumby currently, but i have two of the sporty ones with the built in tacho, was it mainly a matter of plug and play?
  5. man, you'll have to watch out that Subaru don't take you to court for making an exact replica of the Baja! copywrite laws and all that.. hehehehe
  6. Hey team, I found this on a wrecked 87ish subbie wagon that a mate had, it looks factory to me? I wasn't aware these came factory, can anyone confirm this? The "subaru" isn't a sticker either, it's etched on and it was screwed/fitted into the center console of a Auto wagon, a perfect fit. It all works and so forth, but the fluid was a little low on the inclinometer, so i thought i would top it up, looks like a light oil of some kind, any ideas on what exactly it would be?
  7. Hey guys and gals, well i've finally found the vehicle to complete my collection! Man have i been searching for ages, these are NOT a common car in New Zealand! A 1983 4WD hatch A few panels are dented, but very little rust and an excellent runner. The underside is the cleanest i've ever seen on a 1983 car... bloody good deal for $50! It'll go nicely with my 1983 Brumby ute and 1983 Twin Carb RX coupe. It'll be receiving a complete strip down, a bit of panel beating/paint job, a 6 inch lift ,a EJ22 / AWD D/R gearbox, Six stud conversion for the 29" tires plus a few other odds and ends i have sitting around the workshop waiting for a vehicle. You can see i've already removed the front bumper and most of the interior is now gone. I've got a fibreglass bonnet and front fenders lined up as well. I thought this would be a perfect car to remove the front radiator and place it above the engine like "subarubrat" did on his ute, in order to improve the front angles. Anyway, i'll be posting pics of the progress for sure! John.
  8. I think i'll be going for a EJ22 non turbo for the brumby at this stage, mated to a EA AWD D/R box via an adaptor. I have a line on a reasonably priced motor, but no loom or ECU for it. How hard is it going to be to get a ECU and loom? does a 2 litre ECU work? I'm pretty happy to go with a basic after market ECU if i have to. But i now want the EJ20T for my EA81 coupe, but i think i'll certainly be buying a complete car, so i can look to transfer running gear , gearbox / motor etc
  9. Ok, good answer thanks. Something else you might have an idea on, is often you can pick up the 90's turbo legacy's which are crash damaged, BUT this often means the cam belt has broken during the crash. Is this a life threatening thing for these motors, or are they zero interferance motors and a replacement cam belt is all thats needed if you're lucky.
  10. Hey guys and gals, I already have a EA82T in my 83 brumby, with the AWD 5 speed out of an RX, but i now feel i need something a little more... I'm going to go the way of the EJ20 turbo. My question is this, What is the main difference between a 93-99 Impreza EJ20 turbo and a 91 legacy EJ20 single turbo. It's just that looking around, you pay a fortune for a donor WRX, but a donor 91 legacy GT or RS is very cheap for a complete car. Does it come down to quad cam and DOHC? What sort of HP can i look to get with mild mods out of a Legacy EJ20 Turbo, will it still be respectable?
  11. Great news then mate! Let me know how you get on with the cheaper ones... i might pick up another set for my next project! Can you PM me where you got them from? On a side note, i paid $450 for my set up.. which i thought was crazy at the time, but $600 is worse.. perhaps prices went up?
  12. I thought i would add one more pic, i must admit we were stuck at this stage and sliding towards a rather steep bank. The brumby just didn't have enough weight to bite through to the gravel. A little digging and we were away... but perhaps i should have had chains on.. hehehehe:grin:
  13. Hey guys, I'm wondering if the other kiwi's in this forum got out into the snow we've been having recently? got any cool pics? I know a lot of the USA members live with this every year, but this is a lot of snow for New Zealand!
  14. You didn't re gap your spark plugs while you were at it did you? To wide causes the same thing you're describing. Also as loyale 2.7 turbo says, recheck the connections of the sensors, mainly the MAF and thermo sensor i think.
  15. I've done the EA82T and 5 Speed constant AWD into my EA81 Brumby, i have no problem with gear shifters or fitting.. short of drilling one hole to mount the rear rubber mount from the gearbox and elongating the holes in the transmission mounts. The only other issue was the front chassis rails and cross member, just a little mod there really. I wonder if the 3 inch lift i have ironed some problem out for me?
  16. Nah, you'll find any EA82 vehicle will suit. You may need to get a new flexible brake line, rather than use the old hardline part. see how you go.
  17. You mean the Turbo unit itself, or a turbo charged Subbie?
  18. How much ATF are we talking here... like a "additive" of 500 mils or a total fill of a 3-4 litres? sorry to the USA guys, i'm not sure what your appropiate measurements are.
  19. Damn, i was worried the doors would be different...
  20. ok, basically, i want to know the wheel base of a standard 1983 4wd hatch, plus the other basic dimensions. They were not imported into New Zealand, so I'm wondering if i can take a fairly common 1983 4wd station wagon, trim out the middle and rejoin behind the front doors and rear side windows, to acheive the same car? Does anyone perhaps have both vehicles, so they can give me some measurements or a heads up if this may work? It would be the perfect addition to my 83 brumby and 83 twin carb coupe.
  21. I started pulling it apart today, The only real rust i found was in the back tray, so I decided to remove the back tray and it'll be replaced with Aluminum diamond tread plate. See attached photo. The engine started up staight away, after a check of the oil and filters etc. It runs really nicely and has the electronic distributor, SWEET. The under body is in excellent condition, as are most panels, it's been rust proofed from new i think, so it's really paid off now! I wee trip to the panel beaters will freshen it up and give it a fresh coat of paint and redo the graphics, bumpers etc. nice I'll be replacing the interior with good condition panels and leather Legacy seats, plus a legacy Momo steering wheel. I'll have to install sounds as well, Just a CD/MP3 head unit, 2 way components in the doors and a 6X9 sub behind the passenger seat. I'll then be fitting a 5 speed D/R and rear disks, then putting it back on the road. It's in too go a nic to convert to a dedicated off roader, so I'll keep looking for a donor vehicle for that project. I'll post more pics when i have them.
  22. Rims are BMB's, i got them off a local rally guru who used to race leone's, now he does Escorts in the classic races. I borrowed that trailer and it's a race car transport trailer, which is designed to be towed behind a lower vehicle than my lifted brumby, so yea, it was on an angle, but it never scrapped on the road luckly. That was the first bit of towing i've done since i did the RXII running gear install (EA82T, constant AWD 5 speed and LSD). In general I think the brumby is too light to be doing regular towing on this kind of weight, but the constant AWD really helps things along in think, I was able to cruise at 90KPH , that the legal limit for towing in New Zeland. Previously when i had the Twin carb EA81 with D/R 4 speed , i felt it struggled a fair bit towing other vehicles or trailers. I'll post some more pics when i pull the white one apart a bit more, i need to see what condition it's in as an all round vehicle, before i decide whats in store for it... I.E Parts car, Another road car, modded dedicated off roader etc.
