Picked up my second brumby today for $200! Reg on hold and needs a warrant as it was in storage in a farm shed for the last year, pretty good nick body wise. Stuffed gearbox, it's stuck in 3rd Low, hence why they sold it so cheap. But i have a perfectly good spare sitting in the workshop just waiting for me to get around to doing the swap!

Opps, sorry guys, a "boss kit" is the after market steering wheel adaptor here in NZ.

Hey Richard, i got mine (EA81) from Murray Costello cars, over on Lincoln road. They are/were the agents for momo in CHCH. (there are others who you may want to call) It'll be old stock for them now, but it's worth a phone call. On a side note, i was under the impression that a Impreza boss kit fitted a EA82? not 100% on that, but it may be worth trying?

Hey leon, If you check out my pic, you'll see i have my boost gauge in the same spot... i also have the oil pressure down there. -
Wouldn't mind knowing the specs and setup of that winch on that Baja.

well, that with a subbie cab would have been uber WICKED!

Sorry mate, I'm in New Zealand, so i just got them from a local CV repair company. They deal with NKN and got them in for me after i told them what i needed. Do you want me to check out some prices for getting them in and shipping to you? or something like that? Or do you want to contact the New Zealand CV repair place yourself? I can send you the details. if any of that will help.

Ok, the info we all need: NKN I80723 Thats a Subaru 25/23 spline DOJ. http://www.nknjoints.com/ is the company.

Yea, working on it... you know how it is.. you put the packaging aside, cos you just KNOW you'll want it later... well i'll be buggered if i can find it now.. But i won't rest until i find it!

I fitted GT legacy seats and connected up the electrics in my brumby. Very simple to adapt and far more comfortable than the standard brumby seats

By 25 outer and 23 inner , it means the slotted socket is for a 25 spline axle stud (gearbox side), but the inner bearing race is for a 23 spline unit. Which means it fits the standard "23 spline" axles/CV and DOJ bearings, but it also fits onto a 25 spline axle stub. Is that explained ok, or am i getting confused myself:grin: The PS rack is a standard fit, although i had to adjust the rubber mounts. The plumbing is completely standard. Fits just fine. The only difference is the way the Non PS (brumby) steering wheel shaft attaches to the PS unit (RX), plus the Tie rods being longer on the RX, due to the wider front track. The LSD is the same size and the RX has the same rear axles as the Brumby. The brakes just bolt on and off with 3 bolts. Just need a new flexible brake line from the hard line to the caliper. VERY easy mod that! For such a excellent performance increase over rear drums. I kept away from the EA82 RX suspension parts, because the axles / arms etc were a wider setup than the EA81, so for Certification in NZ, it was easier to stay standard. Plus i wanted to keep the adjustable front and rear setups on the Brumby as the main point of this vehicle is to go offroad. I just felt it's by far the easiest way to go, i can't see the advantage of going with the RX suspension parts personally, but i'm sure you have your reasons, so thats cool. I've attached a few pics showing what i had to trim out, for the rocker covers and the cam belt pulleys. Please don't mock my welding skillz. I was going to just cut a larger section out, but i was given a recommendation from a local Cert guy, that the less you cut out the better from his point of view. I used 6mm steel plate for the replacement insert. This triming gives me 10mm clearance around the motor / cam belt covers etc.

I've done this myself recently... 88 RX coupe into 83 Brumby... I used the EA82T (loom and computer etc), 5 Speed D/R constant 4wd gearbox (with diff lock), two piece tail shaft , LSD and rear disks from the 88 RX coupe . Plus the powersteering rack and interior gear shifter ,surround and pedal box (due to the extra switches on it). I used front ventilated disks from a EA81 RX coupe. I had to get 25 spline inner DOJ's, but they were an off the shelf part (basically a 25 outer with a 23 inner), I'll have to look up the code. I then used the existing brumby axles + CV's. I felt this was the best way to go, with a view of it being super easy to get replacement parts, over having to replace a custom made part. I kept the front and rear (The 4x4 adjustable type) struts/shock setups, although they are new inners and gas rear shocks. I personally don't feel the coil overs where that great for a light ended ute IMHO. I had to do a few tricky things with the powersteering rack, as the brumby tierods has female fittings and the 88RX rack was also female fitted. it only envolved a double ended, threaded plug with two sizes to suit. Plus a bit of mucking aorund to mount it nicely. Then i just made a combination steering shalf out of the parts i had from both vehicles. The hardest part for me was the chassis rail trimming to get the EA82 to fit in the EA81 brumby engine bay, i took my time and did a tidy job, certification was not a drama at all. The engine mounts are standard, you just need to elongate the cross member holes on the standard Brumby unit and make a little more room for the Turbo up pipe. The gearbox mounts just need a slight elongation of the holes, so simple there too. Then you just need to fabricate a mount for the centre bearing of the two peice tail shaft, once again, i figured it would be easier than forking out for a single custom tail shaft. If you are interested in seeing pics Soobscript, i can show you the chassis cuts etc.

I'm suprised they even know what a Vortex is... Whenever i get quotes for my brumby, they have no idea what it is... all they want to know is, is it a Subaru? yes, Ohh, you'll need to pay more then...Is it Turbo? yes, OHHHH, you'll need to pay even more! Does it have a suspension mod? yes, Holy ************, so you're a boy racer, therefore you need to pay a hell of a lot more than anyone else on the road, because it's the most modified and stolen vehicle on NZ roads and you're a total menace to society! I'm not a boy racer, I'm 30 years old and I've never had a conviction or even made a claim that was my fault. I try to explain it's got a suspension LIFT (not lowered) and it's basically a FARM ute! They don't understand that, all they see is "$ubaru" .. I tell them it's fully certified for NZ roads, they have no idea what that means, even though it's required by NZ law for goodness sake! But i guess thats what you get for dealing with desk jockeys!

Soobie Trailer
Johnnyboy replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
mmm, thats pretty cool... I hadn't thought of a EA82 wagon, i was going to use the tray from a brumby, so it looked just like my brumby which will be towing it. I was going to make a canopy for it and keep the current suspension but add a lift kit to match the brumby's height. I was basically going for something along the lines of: http://www.tracktrailer.com.au/ -
We'll wait until he answers, to see... You could try adding a spring to your wastegate, this will help increase your boost, but then that could only make things worse if detonation is the problem causing the cut out. I get this problem even though i'm sure it's not overboosting. I have a gauge connected, it only gets to 7.5ish PSI. Surely the cut out wouldn't happen until 12 or above?

Sorry Ross, VAF ? whats that.

Sounds like this one has everyone stumped... I was under the impression these motors did not have a fuel cut as a factory setup. This same sorta thing happened to me with my EA82 T motor, it actually went away after a while, but came back, mine has trouble over 4200 rpm at the moment, right where the power is! damn it :-\ I've replaced plenty of parts and had other rebuilt etc. TPS, MAF, thermo sensor, plugs, ignition cables, coil etc etc. I've also tried fuel from 91, 95 and 98.. no difference, but not avgas yet I feel it's to do with the Knock Sensor and the Distributor/timing. But i haven't been able to pin point it yet.

I thought it was a joke this whole time.
Johnnyboy replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The Justy is pretty common here in NZ, there are plenty of the RS models around plus a good number of the Turbo 4wd ones. And yes, these are the little justy's, not a RX leone(loyale) -
Ok guys, who owns this?
Johnnyboy replied to [HTi]Johnson's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
