  1. unless i'm not seeing this clearly due to cars in snow pile, flashlight..cold..etc.....while the only GLs that i've been able to look at with this swap in mind that have a 5 speed do have a cable attached to the transmission end of the clutch mechanism, that cable is being actuated by a master cylinder...? am i seeing this right? if so..it seems that the fluid for the clutch is coming from a common brake/clutch reservoir.. so the brake and clutch cylinders must also get swapped..?
  2. yeah the tires match...roads can certainly be called slippery..and transmission/front diff has..i think failed
  3. what does it feel like if things are not matched properly? and how do you tell by looking at part no.s or whatever on the outside of the unit? 87 auto 4x4..when i bought it the step father or something of the guy i bought it from made some comment about it just having the transmission switched not too long ago.. couldn't really drive it in 4x4..snowy/icy roads, but it just felt bad..really bad...like it was just going to spin wildly out of control at any instant..and it did a few times...
  4. talked to torxxx today..seems like we might be making an auto to manual swap. what i want to find out is just what bits and pieces we'll need and maybe a real life time frame for how long the whole process might take. what i have: 1987 3 speed auto 4x4 wagon...bad transmission. what do i need? flywheel starter? rear diff crossmember ???
  5. ohhhh man the ice track..this brings up a whole new set of questions...i have only driven by...how's the access? is 4x4 a necessity? i am relatively new to the world of subaru, but am still deeply entrenched in a fleet of old saabs...vintage ice machines. .. .. .does anyone run the super meaty ice tires? menards i think?
  6. crown loyale...what can you tell me about your transmission..miles, still in car, operational..? and what's dirt cost in anchorage these days? so are you taking out a 5 sp or putting it in?
  7. so...a dilemma i have, i recently bought a 1987 4x4 gl wagon, 120,000 miles, 3 speed AT that had been driven hard into something...other than the accident damage, perfect body...slightly calico with a mismatched hood..but... i repaired the accident damage...front left side strut rod and mounting bracket, and rim. after driving it around for a few weeks, and feeling what i can only describe as squirrely when in 4x4...the transmission has failed catastrophically. what the garage where it now sits has told me is that it spun the differential out of the case. what i'm wondering is what the life span of these auto transmissions can typically be, and what is going to be my best course of action. would it be advisable to put in a used..unknown condition jy auto transmission? what would it take to stick a 5 speed in..pedals/clutch..rear diff?...etc...? also..fairbanks, ak people..i know there's a few here...any hot leads on good transmissions? thanks..
