Random dying problem is back :( Maybe carb??
NV Zeno replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Kind of sounds like a clogged fuel line, or very possibly a weak fuel pump. Just my 2 bucks -
The same thing happened to a Celica I had in Phoenix way back when. I was running the gas with the alcohol mix. I thought it was the 120 degree heat, but it turned out to be the fuel. I siphoned it all out (sold it to my neighbor for his Chevy), replaced it with a different brand of gas, voila..instant success, problem solved.

OK, there's got to be a way to prevent (or at least slow down) formation of rust on the chrome rings that I attach to my wagon wheels. As much as I've tried to clean them off after the road grime collects, and after waxing every set I've had to buy on an annual basis, I still get rust. Is there anything I can maybe apply to the rings to help keep the salty road grime from eating them? I was thinking the frying pan spray like used in restaurants, am I way off here? I'm wide open for suggestions (although new rings every year look goood:D ).

That hill is only slightly steeper than the street in Tahoe I've spent the weekend pulling BOTH my bro-in-law's Jeeps up. The snow was about the same depth. (I wonder why his digicam didn't work:lol: ?) (edit was to correct spelling error)

ErikR, you took the words right out of my mouth (fingers?) about the tourists in Tahoe this weekend. Traffic was SOLID! It sure pays to know all the shortcuts around South Shore, or we would have starved, LOL. Snow is the great equalizer. My $500 '83 wagon had to "blaze a trail" so my sis's Wagoneer and bro's Wrangler (with Aquatred tires) could move anywhere. I had to laugh every time I saw a $50,000 Navigator or other SUV with chains on the rear tires..too cheap to get the 4WD opition, but most had the full brush guard packages. Oh yeah..Im in for Donner, still Tuesday?

Want a second opinion on the noise? I can meet you..I'm nearby. Can be anywhere in Tahoe within minutes. The snow (and the skiing) over the last few days has been awesome..3 days, 3 different resorts. I think TSJ and some of the other "flatlanders" are planning on hitting Donner Ski Ranch this week..join us! (Brian, I'll PM ya shortly) -
Clutch Cable modifications??
NV Zeno replied to TheSubaruJunkie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That's what clutch cables did for me just before failure, several different cars (Ford, Subaru, etc.). -
Mine does pretty much the same thing. No big deal, it comes back after warmup.

Sometimes the California guys check to see if you're carrying chains (or cables). You'll never have to put them on, but sometimes you won't get past the checkpoint unless you're carrying them. They don't even need to be your size. Borrow or maybe rent some, just for that trip. All the above driving techniques are correct. Be very careful, the temptation to go 50 MPH is powerful..take it slow.

I have pictures of snow in our (then) yard in San Jose, taken in 1962. I think that was the last time. Yeah, The top of 35 in Saratoga gets snow every now and again, and of course there was always Mt. Hamilton for a few days every year, too.

Hmm..that's just the opposite of when mine makes that noise. I figure it's the tranny, it makes that sound when I coast in gear.

Wait a minute..I thought the south end of the Bay Area (Milpitas, Sunnyvale, etc) was hell. Sure seemed like it when I was workin' there, ugh!

I believe there were two different 4-speeds used in the EA81 series. The earlier models had a 4th gear that was geared lower (more RPM at a given speed). I think it was in the 1983 and later EA81's that the 4th gear was a lot "taller" than before, giving less RPM.

stompin in hollister hills
NV Zeno replied to rallyruss's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Slopes? Not much coverage yet, but storms are expected by this weekend, YAHOO! I think I'll take a few quickie runs today, just to get my "ski legs" back. Pray for a big dump! -

Yup, worked for me too. -
Its official the GL is "Salvage" now
NV Zeno replied to Flowmastered87GL's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mike, when a car is that old (even though it's still in good shape as yours), does "Salvage Title" really matter? Uh..we ARE talking about your silver "Antenna Award"-winning wagon, right? -
'83 GLW. Hitachi, Calif model: This has become more pronounced over the last couple of months. While cruising at part-throttle usually in 2nd or 3rd gear in the 2500-3000 RPM range (just going the speed limit kind of driving) the car kind of "bucks" until I let off the gas, or aggressively accelerate. No sputtering or backfiring, just enough buck to make passengers' heads look like "Bobble-heads". I thought it might be starving for air, removing the air filter lid had no effect. The O2 is last-year new, cat original. New muffler, new plugs, rotor, cap, Magnecor wires. Since this has gotten really bad, the gas mileage has gone from the high 20's(25-29 MPG) to around 22. The engine starts and idles idles beautifully, even on sub-freezing days. My guess is carb, but any other ideas are certainly welcome.

How much thinner Gear Oil can I use in my tranny?
NV Zeno replied to torxxx's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I've been using Amsoil synthetic gear lube, I think it's 75W-90. It sure made a difference on some of those cold mornings. It cost a few bucks more, but worth it in my opinion.
