  1. I agree with the crowd that sez to stay away from the split boots. Been there, tried that..what a waste of time. Figure this: the cost of the split is what, about 15 or 20 bucks? Add to that the price of the grease, and your time and hassle (and the MESS) of cleaning the joint, all for something that probably won't work or last if you are successful. Do yourself a favor and get an axle for a few bucks more, about 55 bucks or so.
  2. Back to the original post: it's possible that a Carfax search may have revealed something, like recalls on that model, excessive trips for major service at the dealer, possibly a salvage title. After I totaled my beloved '98 Taurus SE (1 year old at the time of the wreck), I decided to get something used. After deciding on a general model, the Carfax report revealed major reasons to not purchase about 80 to 90 percent of the cars that I did searches on. After finding a "clean one" 50 miles from home, there are still repairs that come up now and again. That's just the nature of any used car, to be expected. Your problems are componded by a crappy dealer. Try an independent shop that handles a lot of Subarus (sorry, I forgot your location, and don't know how popular Subes are there), usually those guys are a lot more straightforward.
  3. I'll second ShawnW and Ruby's recommendation. I have a carb from CCR/Roobuilders on my wagon. It came with a diagram for all those hoses, and Kerry (a great guy) at the other end of the phone if there are any questions.
  4. The BRAT(Brumby)'s engine bay is clean enough to eat from...just beautiful:clap:.
  5. Uh, yeah..what Tim said. Although wasn't that a GL-10 that got stuck in the mud:lol:? Was very impressed with Ross' stock height 3-door on the trails and mud, tho. (Just pokin' a little fun, Tim)
  6. I had the same problem as you with getting the axle separated from the bearing..it seemed to be welded on, it was so tight. I thought the problem would be solved with the new axle. Went on just as hard as the old one came off. I replaced the bearings later on, and it seemed to have cleared up that issue. Just my 2 bucks
  7. My '83 has most of the "Noise Two" symptoms. The axle on that side is new and of very high quality, so I figure it's got something to do with the tranny..either mounts or worn bearings inside. It hasn't affected performance in any way, but the sound can be sometimes alarming. Of course, a 20 year old car with 275,000 miles isn't going to be as smooth and quiet as a brand new Acura. My 2 bucks.
  8. Just throwing this out there, but wouldn't fuses be blowing if there was a major short somewhere? If both your alts are Kragen aftermarket, chances are they're toast. Here's a golden op to get 2 alts for the price of 1: Buy a lifetime warrantied unit from Kragens (bring your core), and return the second one as defective. 2 lifetime alts for 100 bucks or so..helluva deal.
  9. Tim, Your car is front drive, isn't it? The parts in question may be different from 4WD..might want to make sure.
  10. After watching what Ross's bone-stock EA82 did at WCSS3, I'm figuring on keeping up;) .
  11. That's kind of what I meant about cooperating weather..I figured on driving my rig, and maybe having a bigger "mini meet". Still need to check the calendar, still much travelling between my 3 properties in both states on a few hours' notice (thank goodness for FAX and cel phones..it could be worse!). Keep reminding me though. (Edit) BTW, where did all this time off work come from?
  12. Brian Keep reminding me of this, as of now I think that time is clear..provided the weather (temperature) cooperates.
  13. Always a pleasure to hit the yards. Extra bonus to meet Mendo (with the famous PK wagon) and hang out with the guys. The trail riding season will soon be here.
  14. I'd want one of those for the cupholders alone..the rest is gravy.
  15. Just another item to add to the "shopping list" for Wednesday...
  16. Oh yeah, one more thing. ARI axles. I cannot stress enough the importance of staying clear of ARI axles (greenish-blue and white box). Those are the absolute worst axles I have ever installed on my car. The retailers that sold them to me had no problem when I brought them back (and there were many different retailers). I understand CVaxles.com has a pretty good product, some of the others here are familiar with them, I am not.
  17. Subarube and Rallyruss The axles at United were $75, with a $35 core. Excellent quality. I don't think they do anything "space age" like ship or internet sales (they don't even take credit cards!), but their quality and knowledge of the product is worth it. United Drive Line Service 810 San Pablo Ave Albany, Calif. (510) 527 6879
  18. With a little luck in a break from the heat , I might even roll out my rig for this one (no A/C, y'understand...).
  19. WOOT! Finally...congrats, man. Weds. 10th looks good for me, Bri.
