Have you ever replaced a GL ............ ?
NV Zeno replied to GLwagonlove's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah, lift up on the cover at the base of the wiper arm (it hinges where the arm sticks out). There's a nut that probably came loose under there. Tighten that nut (don't go crazy, snug is enough), should be good to go. Please let us know if it works or not. -
I can't recall ever buying or paying for shop rags. Used T-shirts, socks, old dish towels, washcloths, even worn out bath towels. I've actually got and get so many I feel kinda guilty about throwing out the ones that get really gunky on their first use . Just my 2 bucks

:slobber:. Lookin' goood! Can we expect to meet him at the next WCSS? -
Probably an "adapter kit" of some sort. I have a friend that "converted" her Suburban that way for mail delivery. IIRC it's all added on. LHD stuff is still intact and operational. I seem to remember her having to travel to Kansas or Oklahoma(or thereabout) from northern California to have the conversion done. Just my 2 bucks

Yeah, I used McBrat's shortcut on my '83. Worked great! Higly recommended. -

My all-time favorite Subaru guru around here is Norm's Auto Repair (Subaru Specialists) in South Lake Tahoe. Excellent work, reasonable prices. There's another shop I've used once or twice, it's called (IIRC) Independent Auto Repair. He's in Sparks, on Bergin Way just east of McCarran off (IIRC) Greg Street..knows all Subarus well. I don't think either of them have websites, but both have reputations for excellence. Just as an additional note: probably the worst place to bring your Subaru is Michael Hohl Subaru in Carson City..their work is OK, but they'll gouge the eyeballs out of you on price. Please let us know your findings. Just my 2 bucks

I replaced the disty on my '83 (it's a Hitachi) about 150,000 miles ago, and it wasn't because of the symptoms Alanbegg described. Mine caused the "ECS" light to illuminate, and when I replaced the disty, the lighr never came on again. I am however experiencing the symptoms he described, on an occaisional basis..it comes and goes. I just deal with it figuring it's just part of the novelty of driving with a carburetor . I could be all wrong about that, as itdoes kind of feel like some kind of electrical/ignition induced bucking. Just my 2 bucks, staying tuned.

Replacing Muffler, got questions
NV Zeno replied to NV Zeno's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Mike, from my experience shops don't like installing parts that someone brings them. They usually charge an abnormal rate for the work, and that usually works out to just having the whole job done by that shop anyway. I get what you mean though. :-\ Come to think of it, Rick at Harrah's Casino might be able to help me again (he likes BEER). I'm going over there today, I'll stop by and see if he's up for it. Thanks for the "knock on the head". -
Replacing Muffler, got questions
NV Zeno replied to NV Zeno's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ed, I totally brain froze on identifying my vehicle type, certainly a vital mistake on my part. Car in question is a 1983 wagon, non-turbo. It looks as if I have an aftermarket "direct fit" unit on the car now, and the replacements I've seen are the same, meaning there's no flange that bolts to the midpipe (as described above)..just a couple or 3 inches of pipe sticking out the front. I haven't bought anything yet, I'm just going by what I've seen out there. So, if I understand Ruparts' post correctly, I still need to have some welding done anyway...right? -
OK. My muffler is about ready to fall off, and I've found a direct replacement to the one that's currently on the car. Hangers are in the same locations, etc. It's separated where the inlet pipe meets the muffler..looks to be a pretty clean break. Nothing much holding it up besides the hangers, and it's sagging a bit. All the pipes before the muffler are in real good shape. Without any welding being involved, is this something I can do myself, under the car (on the garage floor)? What other parts do I need? TIA

Sealed wheel bearing vendors?
NV Zeno replied to eVIL_NTT's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There's a place in Sparks that has them, but I don't think they do mail order... You're still in Santa Rosa, right? I've got a bud that's in the auto repair business there, I'll give him a call tonight and see if he knows of any bearing suppliers locally. -
It has been my experience visiting pawn shops (and there are many in Nevada) in recent years, that you're not "dealing" very much, as most of the shops have barcoded labels on just about everything, and a set price..sort of like shopping at a retail chain store. Not much room for "negotiation". They seem to be set up to sell to buyers that have lousy credit, and will finance someone who couldn't get a payment plan somewhere else. They'll sell a used tool for about the same price as retail, and "carry the note" when nobody else will. I know a guy that owns a "dirt lot" car dealership (the Buy Here Pay Here type), and provides financing on mostly junk, makes decent money. He's got a skilled "Collections Department", and many times sells the same car several times. (back on point...) While the pawn shops sell a lot of off-brand used junk, there are a few hidden gems (and deals) out there..it just takes a lot of diligence to find 'em. Just my 2 bucks

Got another 1/4 inch or so tapped out, insert is in, and new spark plugs all around. Took it for about a 100 mile shakedown run (up/down Spooner and Brockway a couple of times, also some freeway), no blowouts. I feel confident that part of the job is successful, it's time to return the borrowed tool to Rick at Harrah's. I then went to see what I could do about a rough/non-idle and stalling situation with my carb. I sprayed the inside of the carb with Gumout, as there was some "stuff" built up inside, but nothing unusual or anything I haven't seen before. I took the aircleaner box off and started spraying the outside of the carb, lots of gunk built up on the exterior and linkages and such. While the aircleaner was off, I noticed a broken electrical wire. Turned out that wire was connected to the "idle solenoid" on the front of the carb. I repaired the wire, and voila!, the engine idles just as smooth as can be (considering it's a Hitachi), the only real issue that's left with the carb is the accelerator pump isn't so great..a real riot to drive in stop-and-go traffic, especially around South Shore. for right now I'm satisfied, and until I can be without my wagon for awhile, the accelerator pump will have to wait..probably til summertime, when I don't need my 4WD, and have another car to drive. Thanks to all for your responses tips and advice, I consider this repair finished and a success. .

Intake gasket, huh? Haven't heard about that being a culprit with these Subies, but it was definitely something that happened more often with our muscle-cars during our high school days (about 10,000 years ago... ). Glad you found it..I'll have to double check mine.
