'90 loyale turbo steam out the exhaust
Meeky Moose replied to rain_man_rich's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hey rich, steam out the tailpipe would be either HG going, cracked head, or possible a turbo issue.. if the overflow tank is not filling up, a hydrocarbon test likely won't show much. check the tiny coolant line thats under the intake too, its hard to see and if it gets a pinhole in it, it won't leak unless its revved up. if ya need a hand with anything i can get away weekend evenings and mondays and fridays.. -
i was gettin 26-28 on the freeway, then it got cold. it dropped to 17... i replaced the knock sensor (per code) and its gettin even 20... i'm still not impressed.. but yesterday when it was below freezing outside, it didn't want to idle less than 1500rpms.. so even tho its not giving me a code, its going to get a coolant temp sensor. since it tells the ecu how cold the engine is, which in turn makes the ecu go rich, lean, etc.. we'll have to drag race cal.. just so you have a comparison of how yours should be moving j/k;)

my previous 99' outback was awesome in the snow, and it was automatic.. my previous 2001 outback was a big POS in the snow. abs would kick in and the car wouldn't stop at all in snow pack, and turning, pfft.. forget it, it liked to push itself straight in the corners in snow pack. its the only subaru i have ever actually hated to drive.. ohh it was an 01' limited, 5-speed with 43k on it with these problems.. it was sold in favor of an older subaru.. i have to agree that the new subaru's are not of the same quality as the older ones..

water leak could be water pump or external head gasket.. i wouldn't bother with rings, but thats just my opinion.. that involves splitting the case, and might as well do bearings if your in that far, etc etc.. u see what i'm getting at.. lol.. on a side note, action had 4 ea82 wagons and 1 legacy yesterday when i went down there.. yup seen the redneck legacybrat.. theres a nice lifted legacy wagon running around too.. maroon, roof rack, etc.. looked nice..

so i finally got around to pulling codes 22 = knock sensor 32 = oxygen sensor inop 35 = evap the o2 sensor code is prolly from when i ran without it for a week when i did my custom y-pipe. i wanna clear the codes and run it a week to make sure i am getting the right ones for my issues but i tried to clear the codes and they would not clear. didn't matter what i did.. any tips on clearing them?

so first tank of gas since it started to get a little colder out 60-70degrees vs 80's. car went from 26mpg to 17mpg.. i need to check the codes cause it does flip the check engine light once in awhile.. otherwise runs fine.. it has no cats and is straight pipe to the stock muffler. and it does have an 02 sensor. nothings changed but outside temps really.. 91' legacy 5-speed 101k

Stumped bad: Electrical related; 92 Loyale
Meeky Moose replied to cal_look_zero's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
possible the bulbs have burned themselves out? all at once? i'm more of a mechanical guy vs electrical. pro audio had harnesses for the older wagons last i checked. -
the mirrors that stick out away from the glass are 1985 model year only mirrors, in 86 they went to flush mount mirrors. 2wd 4wd didn't matter.

Couple of Loyale questions.

almost every scooby i have owned has had a little whine to it.. i had one that was so loud i couldn't drown it out with the stereo. ( i replaced that tranny even though it worked fine) i'd say as long as its not super loud.. not a big deal.. in stock form the ea82's like a couple degrees advance on the timing from stock. -

the whine with as many miles as it has can be normal.. i'd have to hear it to know more tho.. i am pretty sure the headliner is different between the auto belt and manual belt cars... along with the obvious plastics, etc. we'll have to get together sometime.. the 4wd in a loyale is vacuum operated with an electronic switch setup if i remember right.. the electric switch under the hood likes to go bad and can either lock in 4wd or not work at all... timing is pretty easy too.. if all the marks are right and its in time with connectors connected, and its still running wierd (like timing) the belt/belts could be off a tooth.. of course being spfi it can be a number of things in the fuel / intake system to.. -
fancy seeing u here.. i'm well me on pnwriders blue cbr.. anyways.. i've been a scooby gear head for many many years.. if ya need any help with anything let me know.. i think i passed your house the other day on my bike.. ohh and if the car was taken care of remotely, the internals can look that good after 300k i had a turbo wagon with 300something on it and it looked clean like that..
