Subaru Competition
backwoodsboy replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is a great thread! Incidentally, it was these types of threads/lists, coupled with the fact that "youre still DRIVING IT!?" ...that attracted me to this board in the first place. Brought back memories of my Mom's 79 4WD wagon. Here we were, summer 1987, loaded to the max with county fair entries/plants....my sister and I... and the whole mess is stalled dead in the middle of the steepest hill in the county becasue the gas tank was so rusty it clogged the fuel filter every week. Heres my mom.... under the hood, 100 degrees... changing the filter like it was nothing. (she got pretty quick at it) Back hatch was held shut with slide bolts because the latch was rotted off. Floors were rarely messy because any garbage would fall through the rust holes. I miss that wagon. -

This is not a sign of water intrusion per-se... but rather that something inside your vehicle is WET. My mom's Dakota (NO RUST) has this same trouble on the windshield. I checked, and her floor mats are soaked from snow/winter etc. Steve, is there anything that you have put in your trunk that is damp/wet? Its always hard to tell what is wet in the winter, because frozen = feels dry. :-\ Do you garage your car?

Need Honest Opinion....Reality Check
backwoodsboy replied to Bucky92's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Connie, Kinda makes me wish I took pictures when I fixed my BRAT, that incidentally... had the same type of bottom-subframe rust that yours has. I used mild steel to fix mine btw. Ill second what GD said.... a metal brake is your best friend. Get some mild steel and bend up some U channels. Weld em through for 6 inches or so on either side of the rusty spot(s) I also know JUST what youre talking about with the "keep it or send it" thinking. I hold onto my cars WAY longer than is reasonable..... it all depends on IF IT IS WORTH IT TO YOU. If youre fed-up.... send him on his way. Nomatter what, our time with most vehicles is limited.... but you'll never lose the things they teach you along the way. You can do it. -

Subyrally says he's bringing the coffee. -
Ive had a LOT of boots ooze grease from between the boot and the cup. I wouldnt worry about it, personally. Mine always seem to do it, and even IF the boot pops off or cracks, you will definitely notice the grease slung everywhere. You can usually go a couple days (depending on driving conditions) before you will hear noise, and Ive gone YEARS with noisy, bootless axles, and never had a failure.... (but thats pushing it)

Fuse For Auto Seatbelts??
backwoodsboy replied to goatcheez's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The clock/radio/hazard fuse was the culprit on MY Loyale. Popped a new fuse in, and they worked again! However, the Control box that works the auto-seatbelts is located behind the drivers rear wheel well. Enough rust-out in that wheel well, and the next thing you know, the mini-ecu is getting sprayed with water and salt That tends to lead to troubles Hope this helps. -
My Swap. EA82 5sd DR Trans into BRAT done.
backwoodsboy replied to bobjr94's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
Ill second that. Anybody have pictures? I am also leaning toward a 5 spd brat conversion (and I'd like to keep a one-pc drive shaft) -
