  1. Yes. With the exception of rear defrost and rear wiper controls for the wagons, the dash and controls are IDENTICAL. Im actually running my 86 brat with the dash out of my 83 wagon as we speak!

I hate to post this..... but I have my first BAD thing to say about GCK, albeit minor. :-\ I was wheeling the other day (pretty hard -deep ruts, and suspension travel maxed out) I get home, and the DOJ boot clamp had slipped off! Just your usual "grease everywhere" situation and whatnot.... and I was able to repair (the clamp wasnt BROKEN, just slid-off) Anybody else have this trouble?!
  3. I only offered some suggestions for (trouble free) driving. I think the key point is that the vehicle will be going "suddenly" into colder climates, from what I understood. I HAVE been frozen out of my subaru before (both doors and hood) by dampness in the rubber seals. Same as if you were going wheeling, or getting ready to drive through the desert. You probably wont NEED it, but.....being prepared is way better than being stuck.

During most of our winters here in the "hills" of upstate NY, it routinely gets that cold or worse, and can stay in those temp ranges for weeks at a time. * If your battery is old, change it out. (more cold cranking amps = better) I have never had a problem with a good/newer battery at only -20 degrees F * Get a coolant tester if you dont have one, and test your coolant. A poor mix probably wont be bad in twenty below, but might slush up as you drive at those temps (been there) * Change your oil to the lightest weight recommended. * Buy a few bottles of drygas and use it. * I pour a half a bottle of rubbing alcohol in my washer fluid to keep it from freezing as well. * Silicone-spray your rubber door (and hood) seals. It really sucks to have a vehicle that is READY for the cold.... only to be frozen out of it! (also been there) EDIT: Also, if youve never driven in temps like this, dont expect your car to be quite the same. Vehicles do strange things in the REAL cold weather. Things that always make some noise wont, and things that never make much noise WILL. Im sure others will have more/better tips.

  8. I usually spray some undercoat in my wheel wells (and under the car) A good wash/wax is usually in order. Check brakes, hoses, and fluid levels. I also like the "deep" floor mats that hold lots of slush from my boots (beats frozen carpet) A winter tool kit (shovel, carpet, gravel etc) as well as some warm clothing and MRE's for food/something to start a fire if need be. Extra oil, coolant, 90w gear oil etc (those I carry all the time though)
  9. Yeah, look at the outside edge of your rotors. They will either be solid or vented. If they are solid, its a simple matter of replacing a few parts for the swap.

Works great & CHEAP! While were talking military surplus.... Darlingchip and I usually carry a few MREs with us. Ill have to post up some pics of "Bucky" the Loyale all ready for winter goodness (I just havent gotten quite that far yet)
  13. They say a "ticking" sound coming from a subaru engine indicates that it is RUNNING Bucky ticks SOMETIMES. From my experience, at idle (even INCREASED idle at startup) the oil pump doesnt produce quite enough pressure to pump up the lifters.... hence the ticking. I had run Bucky for about 10 minutes last night....... tick tick tick. Then I hit the gas and sent the tach to about 2 1/2 grand (and the ticking stops) Marvel Mystery that bad boy!
  14. Here in good 'ol NY state, we we'rent ever allowed to release a cut-from-code key (or even the key CODE) unless you could PROVE by documentation that you owned the vehicle.

  17. I just had my 95 legacy clutch done. The kit was 200-ish @ NAPA.... and labor was about the same. I didnt think I made out too bad, considering other shops wanted 3-350 for the same labor (I think "book" time is 8 hours)
  18. More than anything this symbol is what you gotta see. Actually, I have had very good luck with "directional" tires. The directional tread pattern "clears" the snow very effectively. They are also "siped" to grip the thin sheet of slush/ice that is left after the blocky tread has done its job. Snow tires are less and less about the tread style, and have more to do with rubber-compound these days These tires I have on my brat here look really agressive (and they are in mud) ....but theyre NOT rated for severe snow! (Not siped) Go figure.

  21. All depends on what you like I guess. Theyve got great lift kits out there for all the EA series... Grab a torch and a sawzall, mount up some 29's on 'yota rims and go for it!
  22. My vote would HAVE to be for the hatch. Properly modded, they can be beefy. Better approach and departure angles, easy lift, and no timing belt to screw with! My .02
