  2. Ive never done one with the hub on the vehicle due to the abuse it would put my bearings through......but thats just me;)
  3. Every time I have done one of these, I have removed the wheel, then caliper, then the hub..... and pounded the old stud out on the workbench. A mapp gas torch works well to heat the hub all around the stud, and then bang 'er out. (if its nice and hot they come out easy!) Your local NAPA should have a new wheel stud in stock, and you might want to change the matching lug NUT too if thats stripped. Shouldnt take you too long if you have ever had a subaru hub off before. IF you havent......and dont have a torque wrench for the axle nut and/or a service manual for the car, you may want to enlist some help.

  6. Matt, I just registered my 86 brat with a campsite! yeah, baby. Darlingchip and I will be coming down friday night and staying for the weekend. Is there anything else I need to do? (lemme know about tent $$ ....Ill be happy to chip in a few bucks)
  7. Oh, and the hoodpins......... Well, the carbon-fiber smacks of "rice" but since they are functional, theyre cool!
  8. Sorry, I guess "rice" is sort of a relative term, (and not a very politically correct one at that) and its definite meaning really depends on where you live. .... along with it usually comes a certain amount of dislike (also depending on the attitudes in your particular area) ....and I will admit is just plain stereotyping. I dont really know how the term itself got started...... but here in upstate NY, a "ricer" is usually somebody that you see in the 1996 honda (or similar) with -the carbon fiber hood -the non-functional spoiler that just adds weight -$1000.00 worth of big chrome wheels -$1000.00 (or more) worth of stereo -the $500.00 cold air intake -e-bay $9.95 "performance chip" -and sadly, around HERE .....usually a STOCK MOTOR:eek: ....there is also, at least around HERE, a certain and distinct air of disrespect about these kids (theyre usually kids here) I dont wanna step on toes with this one....this is just my observation -peace, backwoodsboy
  9. I have a little chart that floats around in my head to judge add-ons with rice or redneck http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=14719 Now.....being a redneck, of course my thinking may be skewed
  10. Ok boys and girls..... I know this has been talked about before http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=66019&highlight=torque+bind+solved%21 but I just wanted to say I tried it, and was pleased with my results. I did the multi "drain and fill" yesterday, (due to torque bind) and used NAPA dexron III. Shifting smoothed out......torque bind got WORSE:eek: So, I remember the advice in this thread, and went back and bought this stuff http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/medium/lube_guard.jpg dumped 'er in...... and torque bind is GONE Be it a short term or long term remedy..... all I know is I DONT have to buy a tranny this week
  11. Mines a '93.....but I typically carry the standard 8,10,12,14, and 17 mm in both wrenches and sockets. A BFH, a BFprybar, and all the other usual stuff. I also tend to carry things like a machete and folding shovel, and a mapp gas torch, tow strap, winter gear, and coleman stove (coffee pot is optional.) I KNEW I was carrying way too much around with me when one of my co-workers asked if I had a gas mask in my wagon.....and was shocked when I said NO! I love being the go-to guy!
  12. I was plowing a friend's driveway last week with their 4wd Kubota tractor. I got it STUCK My '93 legacy wagon, and ever-present tow strap pulled 'er right out! yeah baby:headbang:
  13. Hey Brian, Welcome to the board from a fellow brat owner! They are great....GREAT trucks, and are tough enough to endure most everything but rustout. The automatics......not good. Go with the 4spd for sure. Ive never had a turbo, so the turbo-people will have to chime in here. You should be able to p/u a *decent* brat for under 2k....and dont let the high mileage scare ya!
  14. I must be hopelessly old-gen ...... cause I think the wagon is hotter:slobber: Oh, and welcome to the USMB!
  15. A lot of the headgasket problems are with the older 2.5 liter motors. The 2.2 liter motors are much more trustworthy....although ANY motor could have H/G probs at 200,000 miles, and I wouldnt fault it, as there are LOTS of engines out there that wont even MAKE it to 250K.
  16. I would say it all depends on how it was previously taken care of. Check tranny issues especially. (power light, torque bind, fwd fuse in holder on pass firewall) The motor would be a lesser worry, as they are generally bulletproof unless abused severly. If you can find a paper trail of previous service records, coupled with a good present owner, I would say youre well on your way to 300,000 plus!
  17. Somebody posted this one up a few months ago.... SO FRIGGIN SWEET
