  1. What vehicles are the 5speeds fitted in? And yeah the Baja was pretty simple but thats kinda my point - other than the Tribeca....not much is new. The outback is really a legacy and the Forester is an Impreza in disguise. Then again, if it aint broke - dont spend millions designing a new one.
  2. The only reason it irritates me so is because im sure they couldve built a new auto with the R&D budget they blew on the Baja. I mean these guys are bloody brilliant - they stuck pen to paper and made a new 6cylinder, (cue EZ series). They still have one of the worlds best AWD systems (the volvos haldex one sucked!). Good crash ratings, the fuel economy is getting better, reasonably reliable vehicles that are stylish, practical and affordable. But when the rest of the world is building 6speed tiptronics, with more electrical goodies than you can shake a stick at, were driving 20 year old technology. Fuji may be a small company but they dont even seem to be doing anything new. (Oh and my apologies to the original poster for ranting)
  3. I wouldve asked: Have the clever boffins at Subaru ever sat down and designed a new 5 speed box? Or are they still working from the plans made in the 80's when the EJ series was first introduced? Have there been any significant changes in the design or is it essentially the same box now as it was 18 years ago? (forgetting hydraulic clutch and LSD arrangements as thats more of an upgrade than a new design) And while were at it - why the hell are Subarus still 4speed autos?!?! Drove a volvo 6speed v8 the other day and it shifted beautifully. My biggest hate for autos is not having enough gears
  4. Someone correct me if im wrong but I believe the dexron fluids are backwards compatible. i.e 3 will work with 2 and 1. Same with DOT brake fluid. I thought Subaru have Dexron3 listed in the owners manual?
  5. Picasa!!! I love it - not only does it let you resize, crop and adjust the color in your photos. You can also adjust the quality of the JPEG so you can get massive pics that dont take long to load. Also its pretty dam handy for keeping all those pics catalog'd. My .02
  6. After driving my mates old '94 Legacy A/T home from KatiKati with an xplodzord crank pulley - it acted very similarly once the battery voltage got low enough. Aaaah memories - driving at 10pm with just one fog lamp and marker lights on to save power. A trunk full of batteries.....thems were the days
  7. Parts Supplier: "Ill give 'em to you cheap but only if you buy ten million..." But yes, i too am curious to hear about the replacement or service interval.
  8. Non-functional!!!??? Its totally functional!! It makes the car look WAY cooler! Nope it isnt - but fitting a strut brace and cone filter is. Especially without other mods to make them worthwhile. (stiffer sway bars, turbo, cold air induction .etc) No, its because you fitted a strut brace and a cone air filter. Instead of getting a wheel alignment to diagnose the handling issues. Were a bit different - we willingly choose to support a non-mainstream car manufacturer just because they do things differently (pillarless doors, boxer engines and AWD).
  9. Put me down for $10 on a ticket during the test-drive ....happened to me once...true story
  10. Due to the nature of the knock sensor, its my opinion the lack of shielding could cause a malfunction. After all this sensors feedback is a weak one which could be affectecd by magnetic inductance from the nearby plug wires/coil. However i think its far more likely the sensor unit itself is damaged, if it was involved in the overheat then this is a very likely scenario. Either way - would be a good idea to try repairing that shield.
  11. In my '02 "H6" I see around 28mpg open road driving and we dont have traffic so around town is about the same. Nowhere near as bad on juice as my EJ20H was - they suck.
  12. The Sedans had them pre-wired of that age, i'd assume the wagons were the same
  13. Not entirely certain for your year but some earlier models had the trans fluid cooler as a heat exchanger inside the engine coolant radiator.
  14. Would there happen to be a similar sized tube missing from the bottom of the radiator. Sounds like an ATF hose carrying ATF to the rad for cooling has come off.
  15. Thats 205kmh limiters on the cars.....which is a shame because theyre capable of 250kmh without pulling a muscle. Theres the usual 100kmh speed limits on the roads however. And its coming to something when your impressed with a rear window wiper!
  16. Youll need a couple cans of Steinlager to loosen up first then earmuffs for any children in the vicinity. Unless i just got unlucky and every O2 sensor ive changed was welded in place by the previous owner.
  17. I agree with all that from the FSM, but from what i read the problem was that the fans ARENT cycling on and off on car #2. As i dont have an FSM, does it say anything about that issue?
  18. The New Zealand market soobs are built in Japan and shipped over. But the majority of the cars we get are ex JDM cars sold in Japan then exported after a year or so of use. So everything we get is covered in funny picture writing and sucks. Oh and we get nasty speed limiters at round about 205kph
  19. If its a model with air con, check the compressor is actually spinning up when you stick the A/C on. Im fairly sure one of the failure modes is to have both fans run constantly, as thats what you get with the ignition on and engine not running. If the compressor is spinning - do you actually get cold air? Im willing to bet its a malfunction with the A/C compressor sensors or control rather than a fan relay issue. On the 1990 Legacy im working on: the first fan will spool up immediately and the second one kicks in a second or 2 later. Both will run constantly if the compressor doesnt spin (engine off or drive belt missing).
  20. Cheers man Thats the kind of praise that makes my day Especially when i couldve got one of these for the same $ as my car. Guess i shouldve added my .02 - WRX = Plastic door trims, plastic dash, cardboard seats and body panels made of metal so thin you can read through it. But OH the SPEEEED!!! Give me my torquey padded leather legacy any day. But to each their own. Edit: Speaking of speed i saw a EZ30 Bi-Turbo Legacy putting out 700hp today. Sure it was a drag car but still inspiring.
  21. Could i Nominate this post for a gold award? And give 91Loyale a rock on for saying what most of us were only thinking. But yeah, cone air filter = death I forgot where i read it - somewhere on miatanet i think. An ex navy engineer hooked up several cone filters to his miata and did air filtration tests and dyno tests. He found that cone filters dont give you any more than one HP gain and they trash MAF sensors whilst causing incresed engine/turbo wear from all the crap they ARENT filtering from the airflow. Only reason you get such a big power increase on the butt dyno, is because the car sounds like a ricer and you removed the horrible restrictive snorkus thingy.
  22. Ive towed many a things from those hooks, havnt snapped one off yet. To be honest i cant really see anything else on the front of most cars thats practical to tow them by. And for those of us without a hitch that like pulling non-soobs out of the mud - what else is there? :-\
  23. Posted by request - the newest addition to our group: Which is replacing his old 1994 Legacy GT EJ20H So Rob (known over on XT6 as xtwhakatane and on LegacyCentral as fellarangi) will now be joining us on our next track day in his new 1999 Impreza WRX. Its an authentic STI model with all the goodies and the red-top EJ20 motor. Only down side is his insurance premium has now gone through the roof.
