Timing Belt Covers - Yay or Nay?
keltik replied to mrroot's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Am now running my EJ without covers, so far 3 miles and no problems. After water blasting the engine bay to get all the old grease and crap out it still runs, and from the look of the cracked worn belt - and the whining from an unhappy idler, it was worth me getting in there. -
What is the purpose of the PCV ?

I'd be interested to know if your keeping the timing belt covers on or not? -
Timing Belt Covers - Yay or Nay?
keltik replied to mrroot's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On my EJ20, the passenger side cam gear shattered - all the chunks got dragged around the inside of the belt covers and messed a lot of other things up. Now on my EJ18 theres a funny whining noise coming from somewhere in those covers, so when they come off - theyre staying off! The t-belt job will be SO much easier without them. Huzzah for non-interference motors. -
My legacy is exactly the same, 16-valve engine but theres only two cams. Forgive me for the mini hijack here but do your valve covers have an odd shape with some of the head bolts on the outside? Anyways really nice car there Lukas, i also think people have forgotten the impreza was designed to be a small economical 4wd not just a sports car.

Personally i would hook it up. I realise and appreciate having a clean engine is nice, but a PCV system is only 3 extra hoses, why not fab up some stainless ones and make it look flashy. I think when these PCV systems were designed they had a car environment in mind where it HAS to last a good few miles. But i think on a weekend trike it wouldnt make too much of a difference. Oh yeah and btw the other purpose of the PCV valve is to give us something to *************** about and to give the dealers another way of pulling cash from our pockets. -
Look on the bright side dude, your car didnt cost ten grand and you didnt hurt yourself. Coulda been worse. My old man once said to me "everyone has an accident some time son, they either learn from it and become a better driver - or learn nothing and kill someone the next time".

Well after my last disaster i picked up a cheap car from New Zealands version of EBay. Shes a 1989 JDM Legacy wih a 16valve single point injection EJ18. The car needs a bit of work, some paint and of course oil leaks need to be sorted, but the motor runs well and ive transplanted in a heap of interior bits out of my 1997 Legacy. On the bright side ive got something to fix up in my spare time now, and its a fun car to drive. If anyone has info on the SPFI system please let me know, from what i can see so far it looks identical to the EA82 system. This weeks job is to whip off the timing belt covers and figure out which idler is whining. Also if anyone can tell me if this motor is interference or not it would really help! Also for future reference, 205/65/15 will NOT fit, 195/60/15 will fit under the spring perch but will rub the inside arch in tight corners and heavy loads. Oh and myself and waimaks got together and stuffed all our favourite video clips into one end of year special. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnuBHbswa_g

Here in NZ its a popular motor choice, along with the EJ20. Very rarely do we see EJ22's. Mine is an SPFI EJ18, only the pre 91's got SPFI, the rest had the quad cam 16 valve MPFI setups. But of course this is just here in NZ where we get all the JDM crap and occasionally some of our own weird specced cars.

Why isn't an EA82 a raging "hot rod"?
keltik replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hows about we take a V8 full of mistakes, make it a nice 4 liter american thing and compare it to the STI EJ engines in the wrx. Considering power to weight ratios, fuel consumption and hell lets throw emissions into it too. There will be a considerable difference that only a complete idiot will mis-interpret. In that example were not even using the "baddest 4 banger". The hard fact is that your beloved EA series engines dont make power easily. The EJ engines are smoother, lighter, easier to tune, have turbo versions that dont suck, parts are available, therye clean and green and you will ALWAYS get more power from a tuned EJ18 than a tuned EA82. Same displacement engines, but one of them has 5 mains. And for gods sake man, to ignore common sense and protest That less crankshaft support is better, and that low power outdated designs are the way to go. Thats just insane, especially on a technical forum filled with automotive engineers and home mechanics. I dont mind you having an opinion, but save it for off topic because when im looking for sound advice on engine mounts, i DONT want to read about using blocks of oak and cutting holes in my bumper. -
I give this thread a day before the mods stuff it in the naughty box. My last car (honda) got weighed at one of them cop stops, came out at 1400kgs.....whats that in the old money?

Ok i want to modify my last statement a bit, instead of just doing it - i think i'll take the heads off my EJ20 and compare them to some EJ18 heads. From what i remember the compression ratio on a EJ20TT is about 9.2, so even running that as n/a shouldnt be too bad. If i can get the heads milled to bump that number up - all the better! But first is to take things apart and see what an engine thats suffered total cambelt failure looks like on the inside. -

In my personal uneducated opinion, the EA82 is not a hotrod because its a rather rugged car. Subaru made the motor flat, slammed a spare tire on top of it and called it good. They designed it to be a reliable car which gets the job done. I never saw a GL Wagon in the Fast and the Furious. If they had an XT6 in "Tokyo Drift" i bet youd see a few with glued on bodykits and big tachos trying to be like the movies. Then someone would start selling aftermarket bits to make your XT go faster! Finally if "Eleanor" in Gone in 60 seconds was a Brat not an american V8 thing, maybe youd see more companies making big chrome superchargers for EA series soobies. Then of course there are the more obvious reasons like the bad flowing heads and all that stuff. -
Holy Rusted Soobie, Batman!!!
keltik replied to daeron's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yay i finally have a car with real authentic rust! Was cleaning leaves outta the sill around the boot lid when i gave a dirty spot a poke with a rag.....now my fingers bleeding and theres a hole in the car. Impressive rust in some of these pics, how the hell do you people pass inspections!!?? This rust stuff is teh evil! Now how do i make it go away.... Edit: Also big LOLS at the thread titles in the "Similar Threads" box -

Hmm might just go get another EJ18 for cheap and bolt this thing together and see what happens. If it goes i'll be a hero - and if it blows up it should be fun anyways. -
Hi guys, ive got a nice SPFI EJ18 in my car at the moment. It has the SOHC 16 valve heads on it. I also have whats left of an EJ20TT in the garage taking up space. Now i was wondering.....what exactly would happen if i shoved my EJ18 heads onto the EJ20 block? Would i get a high compression n/a monster, or a valve bending pos? Can anyone give me some compression ratios from their FSM's? I want to keep it SPFI for now so i would swap over the intake too, i like how simple things are when you havnt got 4 injectors to worry about. And the new sedan is fwd - so theres no point in adding turbos to the equation. Finally in case nobody knows or can figure out if this is do-able, is the EJ18 an interference motor? Mine is an 89' motor and as said has the weird heads on it. Edit: Just wanted to add, both motors are JDM spec

Thats nothing a few beers and an EJ swap cant fix. If you put the engine togther yourself, dont be hating the car - hate yourself for not taking the time to do it properly. Although i am on your side, i cant stand the EA82.

The cars here! The seats swapped right in, the center armrest/hand brake and gear stick surround swapped right in. I also swapped in the hand brake which bolted up using a different set of pre-drilled holes. The engine makes a bit of a whine, i suspect one of the cam belt idlers is whirring, ive eliminated the power steering, alt and air con systems by disconnecting their belts and it still whines. Also on the side of the car theres a sticker "4 Cam 16 Valve".....i look at the engine and i can only see 2 cams, it doesnt look like theres room under that cover for 2 on each head. On the valve covers is stamped 16 valve. Its a very nice car for the money, the SPFI EJ18 pulls nicely and i got about 30mpg on its first voyage from Auckland (about 300mile).

My heater squeeked, on most of my cars here i was more concerned with running the heater to keep the engine cool rather than the cab hot. Anyways back to the point, on my last car the heat was bloody marvelous - would get ice off the windscreen in minutes and the engine would be hot within 5 miles of my house (all flat straight 30mph driving). One time i got the interior up to 34degrees with the heater when it was 6 degrees outside. When i dropped the heater motor out however i did find a few dried crunchy leaves and bits of insulation. If your heater isnt hot enough i'd say the first place to start is cleaning out the blower, youd be surprised how much crap can build up in there.

So you hacked the cage up and now it blows air fine?
