I plugged EGR on Carb model ...
keltik replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good lordy this is out of control! To answer BGD, forget the EGR. As long at that plate doesnt leak your all good to go. For the people who say he is a bad person for removing vital emissions devices - its not going to make a whole big difference, its an old school sooby for christs sake. If you want to make a difference, dont put the EGR back on - go buy a clean green car. To the argument about recycling - yes its probably mostly BS, but until someone thinks of a better system and makes it happen ill carry on putting my cardboard in a seperate container. Finally for the argument about BGD not making any sense, your dam right. But hes still a member here and deserves a bit of respect. -
Todays question: How much crap from my 1997 Legacy can i cram into my new 1989 Legacy Sedan? Basically i want to swap the seats, steering wheel, maybe wheels and possibly some engine parts. Does anyone know if the seats will fit? Thats my biggest concern at the moment. Also as this new car has an EJ18, is it likely to be carbed? And will i actually get some fuel economy? The EJ20TT was nice but by god it chewed through the petrol. Thanks for the help.

This is EXACTLY why i treat every knock and rattle as a possible "your car is going to explode" situation. I dont like tire guys, on my last car they fixed the balancing weights to the inside of the rims not noticing the fact they wouldnt clear the brake calipers. 10 miles later i returned and got all the wheels rebalanced for free. Ive also had the occasional lug nut come loose after getting an alignment or new tire.

Cheers, the whole front end has been chopped already, dont have a sawzall tho so did it with love and care using a big hammer and a hacksaw. Engine should be coming out today, the intake valves are all opening and closing nicely - i dont know if theyre sealing however, ill check that today. This mornings goal is to get the gearbox seperated, that lower bolt on the starter motor is confusing me and with most of the car disassembled i only snapped one other bolt! Anyone who has requested interior parts or whatever, flick me a pm with your address and ill find out the postage. For the guy who requested the tail lights: thats todays job, so dont panic it shall be done!

The motor was off when the car finally stopped and first instincts made me rip the key out. Oil is still clean and on the full mark, and amazingly the sump is straight and clean. No external problems as far as i can see, well except for the cams on the one head. Ill go down to the rebuilders once ive got the engine out and get them to quote me some parts.

Thank you shawn for an on topic reply. The refrigerant is still all in it so i just bent all the lines out the way and wrestled the compressor off. Good idea with lifting the body off the engine, may have to try that as everything is so bent up i dont think its gonna come out the other way. Finally how hard should the cams be to turn? On every other engine ive worked on it takes a fair bit of force to rotate them, but on this one they will spin 90-100degrees freely. Anyhows the engines toast, but ill save it all in case i can use some of the parts in my next car.

I saved the seats, all the doors that arent bent and interior trim pieces. I have the one headlight that survived and the gauge cluster and center console/armrest. Now comes the fun part of pulling the engine and gearbox. I got the front of the motor apart and found the timing belt was still intact, however the cam sprockets on the one side had shattered. And i finally know the joy of undoing the crank pulley. After trying a 6ft bar on my ratchet with the car in gear (the engine turned) i got it off using the redneck impact gun - giving the wrench hell with a BFH. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13683&cat=500&ppuser=17976 How can i tell if this motor is worth saving? And how the hell am i supposed to get this air con pump off!?!?

Well spotted with the belt, it got caught as i was climbing out the window. I learned the faster you go the more it hurts. And yes its entirely possible i could have rolled the tire off the bead, they were relatively high profile tires (205/65) inflated to an unknown pressure. Thanks for the support guys, one things for sure - i got a project for the summer now.

Manarius is right on it, i THINK a tire blew out. It was a road ive driven many times in various conditions, clearly something went wrong in that corner. It is my fault, at the end of the day i was the person driving. I dont think im gonna be getting behind the wheel again for a few days....and yes this has made me think long and hard about the way i drive. A seat belt saved my life today.

Picture says it all. I think a tire blew out at 110kph in a corner, slid into a bank. Car spun around and destroyed itself. Airbag did not deploy, and i just happen to be the right height so even with a seatbelt on i smashed my face into the wheel. I was the only occupant, no other vehicles involved. Hospital says im ok, car is terminal. I loved that thing.

The cat on my last car was a bit smashed up thanks to some off roading. I gutted it and got a small improvement in gas mileage and top end power, however it dramatically changed the exhaust note. In the end i went to a shop and had a glass pack put in its place. In my particular case it wasnt cheaper to just go get a cat from the wreckers - but it might be an idea for you to try. That solution would also solve your problem of passing smog test or whatever (we dont have em here).

Now THAT is a dam good idea! Or make it like every other car ive owned where if you open the door with lights on you get a freindly buzz or beep. That switch almost got me yesterday, took a few minutes for me to figure out what was going on and why my lights wouldnt turn off. Good feature tho, i can see it coming in handy for parking on the road at night.

Try legacy central mate. http://bbs.legacycentral.org or ClubSub www.clubsub.org.nz They both have some good info for our cars. -
Just wanted to add - here i pay $15 NZD for a Fram filter. And if i want a passable one, i can go to repco and pay $20 NZD. Thats it.....thats all the choice i get. I hate repco, but i hate fram filters slightly more. All the ones ive bought (for junk cars i was selling on) have been flimsy to touch and much lighter than other brands.

I remember seing a concept for a new engine that used gears to drive the cam. Just a simple gear at the crank and cams, and a small driveshaft connecting them. I think it was on a diesel marine motor, there has to be some drawbacks that stop that design being used. I think id rather have an old school pushrod engine, no belts or chains to worry about. They cant be all that bad performance wise if the new Holden commodore V8's have them. -

I usually would try this myself but now i have 4 cams to deal with on an engine ive never worked with before. Also the dealer salesman who sold me the car agreed to get it done at cost price for the parts. So thats where im going. -

DING! We have a winner! Bucket wins a free beer next time hes in Whakatane. Well this is all going very nicely, im getting 24mpg so far (taken over 470km's of driving) and im still amazed by how smooth everything is. Next week she's going in to get a new cam belt. At 95,000kms and nine years old im thinkin it should be done soon. Now im just debating whether to do the water pump while im in there. Moneys kinda tight and this is the first new belt for the car so i might let it linger till the next one. Any thoughts? -

Heres some pictures to help ya help me figure it out. As far as i can tell....the only thing that happens when you hit this mystery switch, is the switch lights up. At first i thought it was the rear window defroster, but theres a switch for that on the dash just below the speedo. The heated mirror switch is on the mirror control panel and the rear wiper control is on one of the stalks. So that kinda rules them out. P.S Thank you for all the kind comments. -

This car just keeps putting a smile on my face. I went out with my mate who has an identical car except for his auto gearbox. Great times! But i now have my first question. Theres a little button next to the park brake with a picture of a windscren wiper and some wavy lines on it. I dont know what it does. I assumed it was the rear window heat strip thing but theres a button for that on the dash - so what does this one do? -

Yeah it just totally doesnt like CD's. I get "err 6" if i try and feed it any musi whatsoever then it shoots my cd back at me. It wont read CDR's or store bought ones... I neeeeed to fix this - the local radio stations are worthless. -

Well i dont have any scientific figures but when you floor it - it goes. But as soon as those twin snails are fired up it gets hard to breathe and everything turns blurry. I dont know its top speed, partly because im too scared to find out and mostly because the speedo only reads to 180 and it gets there without even stretching 4th gear. As for the interior - im impressed! Its really comfortable and well laid out. The stereo doesnt seem to want to read CD's however, so thats first on the list of things to sort out.
