Well i managed to get the price down a bit and now im its first New Zealand owner!:-p I Finally have a right to post in ths forum now. Pics will follow as soon as ive picked her up. -

Hey guys, was walking past the local stealership yesterday and saw a white '97 Legacy GTT sat in the yard. Well long story short im going to have a good look at it today and take it out for a boost. Its a Manual tranny so no torque bind issues expected, and the bodywork is in awesome condition. What else should i be looking out for? If it checks out clean, all i have to do is flog my Honda off to someone and i can FINALLY have a reason to wear my Subaru WRC jacket.

Im not sure about the stop lamp problem, maybe a corroded bulb socket? (the corrosion would increase the resistance on one of the bulb sockets possibly making the ECU sense a fault). Also using a bulb with a lower watt rating than stock would cause a similar problem. As for the blinker bulbs, if you wired them into the corner lamps in a parallel configuration that would lower the resistance causing a higher current flow and possibly causing them to blink faster (as the higher current flow would cause the bimetallic sping to heat up quicker). Now if i understand this right you took the bulbs off their proper electrical connection and added them to the connection for another bulb. Could you just lengthen the wires and keep everything on its original circuit? Same as Manarius im not an Auto sparky so for all i know this could be completely wrong, but its something to think about.

Im standing by with an ice pack, $10 on GD winning. I gotta admit i also get confused with bgd's posts sometimes and its hard to help someone when you dont know what theyre asking for. As for the HLA's only needing a drip of oil, if my understanding is correct they use the oil pressure to inflate and work. And regarding the claims of the lifters getting hammered into the head - i dont think theres enough strain on them for that unless somethings really wrong.

Nonstarting issue... EA82 SPFI
keltik replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I had a VERY simliar problem in my Vortex turbo. The car would crank fine and try to start but never made it. The fuel pump supplied enough petrol with the ignition on, and would only cycle with the green connectors joined. However during cranking the pump didnt run. I eventually traced it to a nasty bit of wire 6 inches from the battery causing a weak spark and not enough power for the ECU to operate during cranking. The car would tow start with no worries. After replacing that stretch of wire it started fine. Im just trying to say it could be worth checking your fuel pressure and spark during cranking - that was my problem. -
Purge solenoid INSANITY!
keltik replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My vote: Send the Hitachi gear to hell and go for MegaSquirt. If the same dudes who designed the carbs programmed the ECU - it could take years for you to solve this one. -
Purge solenoid INSANITY!
keltik replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Could there could be a small change in the O2 sensor when the valve opens due to the fuel vapors in the intake charge, i didnt think it would be enough for the ECU to reliably measure. Anyways its worth a shot - nobodies got any other ideas yet. -
Purge solenoid INSANITY!

Is the purge solenoid operation dependant on anything else? i.e engine temp or TPS? Maybe its one of these other variables messing with the ECU. -
The Toolkit for the Subaru-er from Brewer
keltik replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'd like to add in a good quality set of vice grips, and an adjustable wrench. Maybe a nut splitter or a mini hacksaw. -

Im loving the thought of that. -
I bought an old Wheels magazine off trademe and found a couple of cool ads in it. My main reason for buying the magazine ws the group test of a Mitsubushi Cordia turbo vs Toyota Celica vs Subaru Vortex XT. As they werent testing the Turbo vortex i think the comparison wasnt all that fair. However the main conclusions were the Celica being the best all rounder, the Subaru was the most comfortable cruising car and the Cordia was a dissapointment. Anyways, heres a nice ad for the USMB collection. If anyones interested in that article, you can read it in my gallery at: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13248&size=big&cat=recent&limit=recent - for page 1 and 2 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13249&size=big&cat=recent&limit=recent - for page 3 and 4 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=13250&size=big&limit=recent - for page 5 and 6 Cheers Edit: There ya go - links fixed. You can just about read it now...If theres demand ill upload some BIG versions. P.S if anyone wants higher res scans or whatever, i can sort that out.

I fixed my car with vacuum cleaner parts!!!
keltik replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I think its a vital tool for any car owner. Awesome for remodeling body panels, rusty bolt removal, starter motor and fuel pump quick fix tool and a theft deterant when wielded with a evil grin.... Not to mention the immense satisfaction to be had from smacking something with a BFH! "If in doubt - give it a clout with a bloody big hammer" - Ancient Welsh Proverb -
Bravo to GD, i think a better thread would have been: what would you do with your subies given $20,000. With buying a new car NOT an option.

From the second post in the thread:

Im with mtsmiths on this one, having the plugs out is the best idea to reduce the stress on the bearings etc. Also saves you hydrolocking the engine with too much oil. Also saves you from fouling the plugs i guess. Let us know how you get on!

I'd have to have a carbon fiber copy of Hucks Frankenwedge....with turbos!! But i want the digital dashboard, full leather interior, a sound system from heaven and a pearl black paint job. Then i'll have a hoist, a million dollar tool box and a trained subaru engineer to fix any prolems for me.

Was this *COUGH* one of the cylinders actually firing? When i snapped the timing belt on my old prelude it made a nice cough knock kind of noise every 2 revolutions, which of course was the piston smacking into some valves. If you had serious valve damage i would expect one or two cylinders to be drastically lower than the others.
-
Im pretty sure you could do it if you stole all the turbo bits off the donor motor, but you may be better off swapping in the whole motor. Or save your coins and whap an EJ into your brat. Also isnt the carb motor higher compression than the turbo? Might just be EA82's that are like that....

Thanks for all the advice guys, i think this is one of the best tips. I drove past the same spot today and there was an old fellah stuc in the same spot in his RAV4. So next time i wanna go that little bit further off the beaten track, ill make sure somebodys close by with a Subaru.

Well i went out for a little drive this afternoon to try and get some scenic photos as it was a lovely day with little wind. Long story short i got stuck. I wasnt paying enough attention and got bogged in some soft sand, trying to get out i managed to dig the car even deeper into the sand and quickly realised i didnt have a clue what i was doing. Yup open diffs suck, and its my daily driver so its on crappy tires and not lifted. The point is, how should i have dealt with this? After 15 minutes of thinking and getting nowhere i called john (cheers mate). As you can see from the marks behind his rx, it took a bit of pulling to get me out. So what could i have done to try and free myself? What do you do in your rigs when your stuck in the mud/sand? P.S I got some nice photos http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=12940&cat=879&ppuser=17976 Will be picking up a soob in the holidays, then i can do some real wheelin'
