'78 DL wagon............yes!!!
keltik replied to crazy D's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
For some reason people still pronounce it "sa-BAH-roo" in New Zealand. I like MAV's wagon, it would be cool to see more of those around. -
Well my good friend hayden wont shut up. All i hear whenever i say Subaru is "oh matt has got this sweet as 1997 Legacy twin turbo, its so fast man!!...etc etc". From what i know it is a JDM EJ20tt with little or no modification. Its also autospastic and knowing this matt fellah it will be written off in a matter of weeks as were his last 2 legacies. The one thing bothering me is hayden's claim the vehicle puts out 260Horsepower. Now i Know my old mans 1.9liter Volvo high pressure turbo puts out 200hp at the crank, has subaru performed a miracle on the EJ20tt or am i hearing lies? Whilst on the Subject, how many ponies would an N/A EJ25 put out? In fact has anyone got a list of all the motors and their outputs? Ive seen the one listing EA series motors on this site but it doesnt list any of the newer stuff. Thanks for any replies!

+1 for compression test. If you've got compression do you really have a good spark? A nice fat bright one? So theres no CEL or codes?

Hehehe, caught John having fun. Now that ive pulled one, i can say Subaru engines really are easy to work with.

OK The video is here. It was MUCH nicer editing it on my new computer which didnt crash every 40seconds. Had to fill in 10 seconds with pics as i didnt have enough video. I Realise theres no jaw dropping action in this vid but hey, some people just like moving pictures. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7843488041563492156 Enjoy it and feel free to complain so i can make the next one better!

Oh yes it was a fun day! And i got to drive a Brat....i feel special. Overall impressed with the Subaru's ability. I want one! River water is much MUCH colder when its flowing into your warm car. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/data/500/PIC00027.ASF Thanks for loaning the brat John.

new to subbies.....just did an engine swap
keltik replied to jmathes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
My old XT had a very poor spark when cranking, it would push start perfectly. After installing new battery terminals and cleaning up all the electrical contacts it started perfect. +1 for trying a new coil. -
Oh yeh forgot about the ea82s. I know Waimaks' vortex starts beeping at 6.5k and we've hit 6.8 a few times in it. But im on his side for saying the ea81 sounds sick above 5k. If someone wants to send me a sound clip of theirs at 7k id be interested to hear it. (edit) ok just watched an old vid of my prelude floating valves at 6,500rpm. Also just got out of a Holden ute that wouldnt rev past 4,000rpm. Subarus might not scream like Hondas but they arent that bad.

Question on effects of changes to SPFI...
keltik replied to GeneralDisorder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Regarding the IAV, looking at mine - its a pretty simple piece of kit and i cant see why it wouldnt work the other way around. As for the EGR and Evap systems, I think the best answer for you would be to go out and try it, unplug the stuff and go for a hoon around the block. As the ECU has to adjust for changing O2 levels anyways, i dont think you'll hve a problem. -
I've been meaning to ask this question too. Most 80's vehicles i see with inline 4's have at least a 6,200 redline. I know most of it is design but my old mans 1974 MG pushrod v8 would hit 7,500 without blowing up. Would the relatively low redline be related to the boxer layout?

I would say a Junkyard swap is your best bet. If your car has got central locking, you should be able to hook something up easy enough. I went through hell trying to get Suzuki and Honda to just send me the keyless locking relay for my cars. In the end i bought a Uniden alarm just for the remote locking feature. The Honda stealership quoted me $500 for the OEM keyless entry thing. Maybe Subaru isnt completely useless. :-\

Rotors & Pads? ACDelco, Wagner, advice?
keltik replied to BlindSight's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well here in NZ ive used Ferrodo pads on my Honda and im fairly sure Waimaks has used them in his vortex. They are CRAP! But for $40 a set i dont expect miracles. Not even sure if you have that brand in the usa but its somethng to avoid. :-\ -
Subaru powered lambo, a lambaroo? -actual build NOW, with pics....
keltik replied to subarubrat's topic in Subaru Transplants
I wanna know what happened with this, when a rocket scientist builds a car its gotta be good. How much would the shell and basic kit stuff set you back? -
I had a funny whistle on my wagon, i eventually tracked it down to a loose joint in my exhast. I could never hear it above 5000rpm but with my foot on the gas at about 3k it would show up. You Might wanna hop underneath your car on a cold morning and look for steam from any of the exhaust welds. KELTIK

I love that quote! I feel theres pros and cons for owning both, but as i cant afford a 98 OBW i'll settle for a old gen wagon. KELTIK

So what youre saying is: you want the wastegate to be actuated by the pressure closer to the throttle body, so the turbo will compensate for the drop due to an intercooler? Well first i'd agree with calebz, 2psi is a rather large drop. It doesnt sound much but its over 10% of your turbo's work being wasted. Also id agree with everyone else, invest in a boost controller. Its simple equipment and when combined with a boost gauge - gives good results. If i misunderstood your question, sorry. If ive given a stupid answer i apologise as im used to working with a volvo turbo. KELTIK

Wow good guess, yes i have to climb a pretty steep hill 2-4 times daily, probably using 2 mins of WOT each way. And also climbing another range near by which needs 10mins of WOT. The other vent from the valve cover which feeds into the airbox is clean. So i need a new valve - this ones sticking, and make sure to clean it off periodically. Thanks! KELTIK
