Well thanks to all the help from you guys I finally put a good axle in my 97 outback. After job was completed ,I pulled car outside and turning the wheel from one end of travel to the other(while stopped),I got a lot of noise from the front end. I had my wife turn the wheel while I looked and found the spring in the strut sticking on the top of the strut housing. I sprayed some lub.on top of spring and it seemd to quiet the noise. Does this mean the strut needs replaced or just a matter of a winter of road crap? Thanks again for the help. Collins

Thanks for all the good ideas.Great to have the input.I don't think I'll ever be done with this thing. Had a rebuilt engine put in last year(bad design with heads Subaru!!). Just this week- new front axle, struts now this gas leak. Oh well, keeps me out of the tavern. Collins -
Grimm, Yes,I had the head job done last year.Matter of fact they had to be redone right after that.I'm quite sure that the block is cracked which I think happened in the first gasket failure, cause it never ran right after that time. My problem is that I just got a price of $4330 for a rebuilt engine.Great news eh? I called Subaru dealer and he said too bad Subaru won't back this faulty design. I sure agree with that. They see lots of them right around 80K. No idea what to do now. Yes my engine is 2.5 single OHC. Thanks, Dave

Well I'm back again with a request for some help. I'm the unlucky owner of the infamous 97 outback 2.5.with bad head gaskets.I had the head gaskets replaced last year and the problem has returned again.I'm getting coolant in the conbustion chambers and engine has had it.We think the block is cracked due to overheating.I have no choice but to replace engine and I read a post by one of you guys on a step-by-step engine replacment.Thought I saved it but can't find it now. Should I try and find a 2.0 engine for this thing or another 2.5? Thanks for you time, Dave

After my calls to subaru failed to address my problem( "sir,we have never heard of this problem before) I have to decide how to get this car back on the road.Beore I start in rebuilding myself,I thought just for the heck of it to ask if anyone knows what a new or rebuilt engine would cost? Thanks to all, CW

Ok guys,I called again !-800-782-2783. the Subaru rep. said she has never heard of this problem.Man it gets to me! I hope evryone with this problem calls this #.I can't do much on my own. It's worth a try.Oh and get this, she said they know there is a problem with 99 to2001.So they started giving customers a bottle of "treatment" Collins

I'm vary upset with Subaru right now.As you will recall,I wrote a while back about another head gasket gone in my 97 outback2.5.I called Subaru today and the guy i talked to said that they will pay for Phase 2 gasket jobs but not my Ph.1.He said there has been no complaints about my engine. Can you believe that?.I have the 800# and I hope evryone will call who have blown gaskets in 2.5 engines. This is the THIRD one I have replaced. This whole thing is starting to really get to me.I called my Sub. dealer yesterday and told him I'm on my 2nd HG in 2 years and what they can do for me."Well," he said" I have heard some questions about these engines. Why don't you call 800# and talk to rep.and I'm sure they can help you".I did call and got no where. What can we do as a group about this design flaw? Thanks for all your help, Collins
