  1. Brat tanks are the same as coupes and wagons. I'm not sure about hatches. The only differences are whether they are turbo or not and 2wd or 4wd. I am currently running a coupe turbo tank in mine and ran a wagon carb tank in the past.
  2. That particular car must have a break in the ground system because I have checked others off car and they do pulse. This car would die as soon as I loosen the hold down bolt. I tried 3 different distributors with the same results thinking I had a bad one. It still runs great ( for a 3at ) but still died without a temporary jumper.
  3. The distributor does need to be grounded to the engine to work. It normally is done just by contact to the head but on one of the Subaru's I worked on it lost the ground when loosened the hold down bolt. That was when I used a temporary ground jumper to set the timing. I still have the car and it still does it every time I check the timing.
  4. Yes, just a small removable jumper wire from the block to the distributor to maintain the ground when you loosen the bolts.
  5. I have actually had an engine stumble when trying to set the timing. It lost the ground connection as I was turning it. I had to put a jumper between the engine and the distributor to set the timing because at one point during the turn.
  6. As naru said it might be worth attempting to fix it. I run one behind an EJ22 and have for several years so with the correct maintenance they do work. 2-3 band adjustment and governor clean and smooth are the 2 things that will make it live the longest. Try the simple things first then replace it with the 5 speed it that is what you want. I have had a complete 5 speed setup waiting to be installed when the 3at fails, but it is still going strong.
  7. If I am not mistaken an '86 wagon would be EA82 and the one his picture shows definitely is. If I remember correctly the EJ can be swapped to the EA82 cradle. Easiest way is find an EA82 power cradle and swap, then mi and match hoses to fit.
  8. The 3at doesn't respond well to different tire sizes. I changed twice and gas mileage fell through the floor. Also it felt like someone put 500 lbs in the bed.
  9. Forgot about the modulator. Look on the passenger side top of stabilizer rod there should be a metal hose that is bolted to one of the bellhousing bolts. That is were the vacuum hose should go.
  10. Nice write up. I am probably one of the few who care about the 3at and am currently running one behind an EJ22. I am pretty sure the drive shafts are the same length as the 4 speed shafts on EA81 cars and the same as the 5 speed shafts EA82 cars
  11. As GD used to say "the search button is your best friend" or something like that. A quick search produced these. http://www.superstreetonline.com/how-to/engine/ssts-1119-building-a-fuel-surge-tank/ http://www.datsun-france.com/Ratdat/ratdatblog/?p=168 http://madscientistmatt.blogspot.com/2005/12/surge-overkill.html The options are build a surge tank or find a tank from an FI car or keep the tank above 1/4 filled. The tank for your RX should be fairly easy to find but for the Brat you need one from a turbo car ( Brat, wagon or coupe ) it doesn't matter.
  12. I have to manually shift my EJ swapped Brat for the same reason. It wants to upshift early and like you I really don't baby it, 5500 rpm shift etc.with the EJ.
  13. The tutorial about cleaning the governor used to be available under the repair manual database but the link is no longer good. The governor is located under a cover on the passenger side upper front of the trans. It is almost directly above the axle. The cover has 3 bolts, remove them and the cover. You might lose a tablespoon of trans fluid. The governor can be pulled out and serviced at this point. Disassemble and clean paying attention to any sharp edges. Smooth these sharp edges with a stone or fine file. Clean again and reassemble in reverse order. The 2-3 band adjustment method is in the manual. If you are going to own a Subaru you really need the manual, download it http://jdmfsm.info/Auto/Japan/Subaru/--Old%20Models--/
  14. If you are low on fluid get it up to needed level. The troubleshooting manual indicates that it is either the governor or the 2-3 band. I have picked up a couple of cars that had that problem. I adjusted and cleaned and both are still running locally 4 years later. Download a manual if you don't have one and do the adjustments and if the parts are still good it should solve your problem.
  15. Adjust the 2-3 band and hope it still has material on it. Also it could probably use a cleaning of the governor.
  16. I know everyone hates the 3at but I have had good luck with them. If you keep the fluid changed at recommended intervals and adjust the 2-3 band correctly AND drive like it is a 30 year old auto trans then it can be good to you. I have mine in an '84 Brat and love it. It originally had an EA81, then a SPFI EA82 and for the last 3 years an EJ22. I've had mine for 19 years and it is my favorite ride after my motorcycle.
  17. I don't see a 4x140 option listed. Am I missing something?
  18. I haven't done it but a buddy did and if I remember it is a direct bolt up other than the wiring. You need all the trim parts including the marker lights and grill for it to look factory.
  19. That is exactly what it should do. Fuse in front wheel drive only. Fuse out standard full time AWD. Somebody correct me if I am wrong but I think the "rear spin" fuse is for a sensor that locks the trans when it senses that the rear wheels are spinning at a different speed than the front.
  20. That manufacturing date should be a 3at but as the photo shows it's not. The fuse for the 2wd should be located on or around the strut tower drivers side per FSM NOT in the fuse box. I've owned 3 of them and every one of them came with a fuse installed in the holder to disable the 4wd thinking it got better fuel mileage. If the fuse is in it is in 2wd. when the fuse is out (not installed) it is in 4wd full time. 2wd is for diagnostics only and the FSM says DO NOT RUN FOR EXTENDED TIME.
  21. If you could post a picture of the gear shifter. This would answer the question of which transmission it is. '87 is a maybe year, it maybe a 3 speed which has a fuse in the fuse box or it maybe a 4 speed which should have a fuse on the firewall drivers side. It has been a while since I looked at my '88 but that is where I remember it being.
  22. It's not in the fuse box. If I remember it is up on the fire wall on the drivers side. Just a fuse holder with a cover on it. It is usually put in because of binding or for the false idea that it will get better gas mileage.
  23. Check to see if someone hasn't installed a fuse in the 4wd override. Sometimes this is done when the transmission is binding in 4wd if it is a 4eat.
