  1. Magnetic socket! I wish I had such luxuries...I replaced mine in about 2 minutes in my friend's driveway. No tape, no magnetic devices and it was the easiest repair I think I've ever done. You definately do not have to remove the intake manifold. I was pretty bummed when I looked in the book and it said that you had to remove it. But then I just looked under the hood, located the sensor and I couldn't believe they said to remove the manifold! What a waste of time. Don't remember what the sensor cost though...Autozone had it on the shelf.
  2. All I know is that everyone says 60K and I'd go by that. Although the timing belt in my 90 legacy 2.2 had 120 when I got it and I had it for one day and went to pass someone and it snapped as I was in the process of passing a big truck with a horse trailer and a car in front of him. It was dark and had no cell phone and we had to walk(not very far thank God)and use a calling card that I so happened to have and wait in the cold for my step dad to bring his trailer out. Pushed the car a quarter mile or so down the road to the trailer. Basically it sucked and I would think you wouldn't want to experience something like that, especially if you had to pay to get it towed $$$.
  3. I have a 90 Leg AWD wagon and I get about 24-25 city and 31-32 on the freeway at 80mph. It runs excellent too. It's got a 94 tranny in it if that means anything to you lol. A friend of mine has a 90 5spd and it gets 25-28 mixed driving.
  4. I just bought a 90 leg L awd wagon 5spd with 180,000 miles on it. When it's idling and you push the gas in quickly it bogs down and cuts out a bit. The only code I got from the cel was right when I got the car and it was the knock sensor. Further investigation found it to be unplugged. Plugged it back in and now the light is off and no more codes. But the engine is still bogging down. It seems to run ok when you drive it but when it's sitting there and you push the pedal in, it's chugs and sputters but smoothes out as it hits higher rpm. Also, when you start it up for the first time, if you don't give it gas it'll die. What is the cause of this? I checked the spark plugs and they look good and the gaps are all correct. Fluid levels are all good, air filter is pretty clean. Inside the airbox the Maf looks very clean. I need to sell this car now, my intent was to buy it and turn around and sell it for twice as much. But every little thing brings my selling price down more and with a little help I think I can fix this.
  5. oooh! Diesel...mmmm I want. My mom is about to buy a VW diesel car, either a passat or a jetta and I think I'd rather her have a subaru diesel. If you want, you can go to http://www.xs.to and you can post the pictures there and they give you a direct link you can paste into here. It'll also give you forum codes to post them on forum boards. Screw photobucket too. I completely loathe that site.
  6. Autozone. They hook you up. You can go there and rent a chain wrench for 20 bucks or maybe it's 18 and if you don't want it, bring it back when you're done and they'll give you your money back and it's free to rent it. Or don't bring it back and keep it. I kept mine. Comes in handy sometimes.
  7. I think the seafoam freed up the lifters and they're really loud now... At least that's my guess as to what that new loud ticking noise is coming from under my hood. That makes me angry. I'm trying to sell this car and people don't like noises like that. There's no harm done right? This sucks. I already have a noise coming from my clutch release bearing and I didn't want another one. I was just trying to help the thing idle better. Could it be the IAC that was making it idle rough during startup? Is it easy to clean?
  8. Alright, well I'll check out the doors later. I just ran seafoam through the engine and now it's sitting for a few minutes before I take it for a drive. A "spirited drive" lol. I'm pretty sure it's the clutch release bearing. When you put the clutch in, it goes away. I think I may have said that it is still there when you press the clutch in but that was a mistake. The idle is pretty rough when you first start it up but after a min it's good. In fact I got in it today and turned it on and it died. I'm hoping that the seafoam helps that out a bit. There's also a loud ticking noise that seems to be coming from the engine. The noise is not present in my other wagon(same year, model but it's an auto). It's definately not a normal ticking sound, like lifters. Has small exhaust leak, as I found out when the smoke from the seafoam came up in my face a little. But you can't really hear it I don't think. I'm gonna go drive it and see how that helps, I put the rest in the tank.
  9. Well, test drove the car today. I didn't even have to talk them down, they told me I can have it for $800 bucks. So I'm buying it in the morning. Few problems with the car. 1. Noisy tranny 2. CEL is on, code 22 knock sensor(easy fix and only code present) 3. Passenger side doors do not unlock The tranny(I think)is making a good deal of noise. I think it's a bit more serious than they say. It makes a growling noise while the clutch is in. I can't remember but I almost think it makes it while it's in neutral too. Not sure. But, wouldn't that mean, it's not the tranny? What else would make a growling noise? I replaced the knock sensor in like 2 minutes on my subaru legacy. Same exact model and year but auto, not manual. So that's not a problem. Doors don't unlock on passenger side. This is annoying but not a major problem. The doors on the legacy I have right now do not have a key so I can't even lock them! Other then that, the car seems to run good and it's in pretty good shape. So I'll take it! Will be back on the market soon enough. I mean, for only $800 bucks, I think I make a profit here pretty easily. I should be able to sell it for at least $1500 but I see them all the time for $2000...Hmm
  10. There is a 90 Legacy Wagon L 5spd AWD for sale 180,000 miles near where I live. They're asking $1000 for it and that is a killer deal! Except, I just talked to the lady selling it and she says she "thinks" that 1st and 2nd gear are "a little growly". She doesn't know much about it and her son is supposed to call me back soon with more info. Apparently her husband had a stroke and I think passed away so they sold all the cars at his car lot and that one didn't sell(they WERE asking like $3,350 for it)and it didn't make it to auction so her son just said he'd throw up a for sale sign and get rid of it for $1000. I stopped by to look at it today while she was at work and it looks to be in excellent condition! Paint is very nice, the interior looks great, tires are decent, has all the hub caps... Is it worth $1000? I think probably. I just bought this same car 4EAT back in february and had to replace timing belt, tranny, wheel bearings, O2 sensor, fuel filter, plugs and wires, and it came out to be a total of about $1200. Now it runs like a champ! I love it. I would like to buy this car and sell it because I really need money right now and if I sell my truck and my current subaru, maybe I can finally buy a nice car that's newer than 16 years old! I've got right about 900 bucks I think and I can borrow some cash from my mom but I just need to know what kind of deal this is? A tranny is something like 200 bucks at the junkyard in the next town over, is that what the growly noise would be or would it be the clutch? Thanks in advance. Sorry this is a bit long....
  11. My 2.2 idles at about 500. Almost silent. I love it. It runs perfect and it's soo quiet. When I first got it, I thought that it kept dieing on me but it turned out it was just so damn quiet that it sounded like it was no longer running.
  12. Alright, I don't see why everyone has such trouble finding milage. It's soooo simple. Screw the gauge all together, ok? Screw the fuel light too, that thing is not always acurate. Mine goes on and then goes off again and then comes back on. All you do is drive until you're about on E and fill it up. And assuming you started out with a full tank, you take the miles that you have on the trip odometer from last time you filled up and divide them by the gallons you just put it. It's so easy. I get a constant 22 mpg, sometimes I get 23 or 21 but rarely. 9 times out of 10 it's 22 mpg. That's mixed driving. And I drive FAST. I did all freeway and got 31.
  13. You mean Toyota? And I bet it will hit higher than 250k. If you maintain it. I have a toyota truck with 300 plus(on the original engine!)on it and it ran great until my step dad neglected to change the timing chain and it eventually stretched out the chain, broke the plastic guide arms and bore a hole through the timing chain cover leading to oil in the radiator, water in the block, blown engine. If he had just replaced the stupid chain... You know toyota is number one right now anyways...lol Althought I must say I don't know why he had so many problems with his subaru. Mine has 280,000 on it right now and it runs like a top.
  14. I've noticed that when I climb into my 90 Legacy Wagon AWD 4EAT each day it runs very rich and a little bit of smoke comes out. But what annoys me is that when you put it in drive or reverse and push the gas in, it nearly dies. And it takes a few seconds to recover. Hasn't died on me yet but I almost want to say it's slowly getting worse. After about 5 seconds it gets up and goes but for the first like 30 seconds to a minute of driving it's laggy on the accelerator and bogs out a bit. Then once it's into closed loop it's fine and has great power and runs like a champ. So maybe this is normal but I don't think so. I think something is wrong and the computer is managing to change the timing and fuel mixture to get the best out of the situation but that's not good enough for me. I got a code about a week ago for 02 sensor. That bothers me because that O2 sensor is only 3 months old and it's a bosch. Cost me like 75 bucks or maybe it was closer to 90. So why would it go out already? The CEL is off now and maybe I'll check the computer again to see if it's still giving the code but I'm convinced that has something to do with it. What should I do?
  15. Alright, here's what they do at the dealership where I used to work as a lot attendant. This is what the detailer does to EVERY car and I did it too and they never had problems. Take a bottle of degreaser(they got special chemicals that I've never seen sold in any stores and they get them from a chemical truck that goes around to all the dealerships)and they spray the entire engine down with a spray bottle of this green liquid. It comes in a big 5 gallon bucket that has a pouring spout and it's concentrate and you can mix tons of gallons of this stuff with it. It's pretty thick, almost as thick as jelly but a bit more oozy and you put a little bit in a spray bottle and fill the 90% that's left with water. Let it sit for a few mins and then they take a gas powered pressure washer and blast the whole engine down. It looks brand new when you're done. The chemicals they use at the dealership are amazing! We would do all sorts of things with this stuff. We'd do the whole engine bay and all the little cracks, the underside of the hood, wheel wells, any drip stains from door handles or lines in the exterior where previous washes had run dirty water and stained the paint. It would work wonders. I just can't remember what it was called, it was almost a year ago. They also had this other stuff called SAR(something like sealant adhesive remover)and that stuff was nuts. It would burn your skin and eat through rubber. Used it to get scuff marks off interior stuff and rubber off the bumpers by the wheels from the road. Stuff you would scrub on for hours and not make any headway would come right off in a second with this stuff. They have a chemical for everything. Bug stuff that would get bugs off that would NOT come off no matter what you did, would just come right off with a effortless wipe of a rag after spraying this bug removed off. Anways, we never had a single problem or complaint with electrical and I've done it to my truck countless times and it's a fuel injected 2.4 22RE toyota pickup. We would do it on a brand new 2006 mazda RX8 or a Lincoln Navigator, never hurt a thing! But if you mess something up, don't go crying to me because I'm just telling you what the dealerships do with their cars to get them looking new again! They use acid on your windows to remove water marks! If you let that stuff on there more than a few seconds it can really damage the glass and if you let it touch the paint...oooh!
  16. Well I just looked on autotrader and a 2000 doesn't even have the fog light bumper, I must have been thinking of the outback I guess. So no one knows if an impreza/outback bumper will fit or if anyone makes an aftermarket bumper? I think it's totally lame that there is practically no aftermarket for this car. It's a great car.
  17. Guess that means no one is rockin anything but a stock bumper or one they built themselves? Well that sucks! Don't the newer legacys have the fog lights in the bumpers? Will one of those fit on my car?
  18. I keep searching but I can't seem to come up with anything. I just want to know what's availible as far as exterior parts for my 90 legacy wagon L 4eat? At least a bumper, like the ones on the outbacks with the sweet fog lights in them? Or the imprezas? How can I get something like that on my wagon? Does anyone make aftermarket body parts for legacys? I have had a very difficult time finding stuff like this, it seems the aftermarket for legacys is slim to none.
  19. I drive very fast some of the time and the rest of the time I just drive decently fast. Thing is, I think it's worth it to drive the way I enjoy driving over suffering by driving slow just to save a little money. I could care less. I just filled up my tank last night and I got 23 again. I think I've determined I get 23 mpg from the last like 5 tanks in a row. Same driving habits nothing has changed.
  20. um, I can't remember what I have but think they're 3.90 I can't remember. I changed them though. I mean, when I got the 94 tranny and put it in my 90 wagon it came with different gearing so I had to replace the rear too. I do not have the original because of core charges. Wait on second though, I might have left them at my friends house a few miles from here. I can't remember though...
  21. Alright, so I know nothing of cruise control. I have been wondering this same thing though. I went to the junkyard, got the level for the steering wheel and there's totally a place for the button I got from the junkyard too and I put that in and it lights up but my steering wheel I noticed is different so I can't put in the lever. What I was wondering is, what else do I need for cruise control? Do I just need to install the lever in the steering wheel? Because if that's it, I'll just got get the piece from the steering wheel and finish the job. I have a feeling there's more to it though. My Car - 90 Legacy Wagon L 4EAT Donor - 90 Legacy Sedan Both full time 4WD I believe
  22. Yeah 100 lbs is crazy for a car. I put my truck lug nuts at like 80-90max. That's a 5 lug toyota on 31" mud tires! I bet the book probably says something like 65 lbs maybe 75 tops for the subaru. I would never do them by hand without a torque wrench. You'll warp the rotors in no time. I totally warped mine. What happened was my car was in the shop at my friends house for like a week while installing a tranny(didn't have time due to school and work so it took a while)and neither of us have a torque wrench so I had to torque them by hand. Apparently I torqued them too much and not evenly because I later went to another friends house like probably a couple months later lol and used his torque wrench when I was putting in a new knock sensor and all of them were way past 80 lbs. The car shakes when you apply the brakes somewhat. I don't know if it was like that before or not because I had just gotten the car back then so I can't say for sure that I did it but it's definately a possibility. Oh well, it stops. But now that I think of it, when I got the car, the front driver side wheel had a broken lug at the surface of the rim. So whatever jackass had it before me had it WAY too tight.
  23. I would totally just buy a new engine lol. Then use the old one for parts. But then again I would do all that work myself so it wouldn't cost me nearly as much so I dunno.
  24. Where can I get one of these pie-lauchers for tailgaters??? That's hilarious!
  25. Well the vin is in the dash, isn't it? Shouldn't be too hard for her to find.
