Northeast 4WD compact car adventure
Subafreak replied to Mike Kamm's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
It was a great run. It was nice to see a change of scenery and check out some new trails. Those power lines were calling my name all day though! Lol. It was so entertaining watching these odd old rigs bouncing through the woods. It was probably cool to watch them tearing down the dirt roads rally style but Mike and Mark were way outta sight on those sections...........now I know why. What is that thing running for an engine Mike, an SR20 with a turbo? I will say I thought I was gonna hate the auto off- road but it was pretty nice and effort free. Not much fun in the dirt er mud but great for climbing hills and over rocks. -
Ugh. One side done. One to go. :/

Yes this probably should have been posted here from the start. Think stock outback safe type of off-roading.

That is some serious preperation! This should be a fun adventure. -
Time to go bigger? Lol.
-
Lol. Yeah I'm definitely avoiding the Bondo route. It would be awesome to have enough subys around here to go wheeling together. Like those bastids on the west coast! *shakes fist in the air!*

Lol. Yeah I'm still fine tuning my thin metal welding skills. It don't help that the end of the welder is getting pretty loose and worn out. Very aggravating, but it's free so I shouldn't ***************.

Oh no. My email got kicked back too. -
One hole almost done. I hate body work. Just gotta finish up welding it together. Did I mention I had body work?

I am intrigued. As long as the Brat behaves it's self and nothing catastrophic happens I'm in. Email coming. -
Had one new radiator that the casting flash on the hose inlet had never been cut out. Stupid possibility I know, but check your holes.

Well being so close to mechanically done I guess it's about time I tackle some of this body work. I had patched up this spot at the bottom of the fender years ago, it held up very well, never rusted thru. But I figured I'd clean it up again and use the por15 on it along with the bottom seam of the rocker panels. Gonna treat as much of the inside of this as I can before I weld in some new metal. I hate doing rot repair. Another shot of the big hole in the trunk to fill in. A few weeks ago I had take the rear springs out to see how much room I had to make to allow full compression. It turns out the tires clear pretty well. I wish I hadn't gotten so over zealous with the sawsall in the beginning. Lol. This shot just looked cool. I had thrown it up on the alinement rack to do a quick check of how well I would be able to get it into alinement. It was all in check. Here you can see why I'm gonna have to move the battery to the trunk and rearrange things in the engine compartment. The areas where the battery and airbox sit are going to be cut out and boxed in the opposite way to clear the tires under compression. More progress to come.

Little picture of a dude wrapped up in a driveshaft. Lol. Priceless!

Those are very awesome stickers as well. Lol. Not a bad price by the look of the work in those shafts. Mine should not be nearly as extravagant as those. Good to know.

-
Those are some nice shafts! You got a rough idea of what you paid to have all them done? The parts in mine are getting pretty worn out so I think I'm gonna need to get some new ones made this time. I fear the whole it's gonna leave in my pocket!
-
Damn that's alot of wires! So are you running a 6 speed with a locked center diff and a divorced t-case on this? Nevermind. I see. The STi motor threw me off. That seems like it should be a pretty strong drivetrain set up.

That is some very nice repair work. I would have never guessed the sentra was in that bad of shape to look at it now. And am I enticed enough now to do what Paul???? -
Now that is awesome stuff! So jealous you guys have enough Subarus to get a group together and go do that. Those trails looked like no joke either! I would love to have a run at em.

So....about 3 years ago when I originally stop driving this car it was because the tranny started makeing a noise like something was whacking the inside of the case. The tranny still shifted fine and drove ok, but the noise was getting louder and louder and I decided I should stop driving it before I broke something that could not be fixed. Well it would appear I was to late. I don't know how this thing still shifted fine back then. Unless all the compleat destruction of second gear happened from just moving it in and out of the shop all this time. Regardless this tranny is junk. So this weekend I swapped in an 02wrx tranny with the turbo legacy transfer housing and the welded center diff on the back. While I was doing that I had treated and POR 15ed the rest of the front end components. I added another support to the control arm drop brakets that bolt to the front subframe just to ensure no unwanted movement. Also added the finishing parts to the tranny mount. With that don't the front end lift is compleated and bolted in for good.

That could be a more doable weekend. Will have to see what the money situation looks like and how the BRAT is feeling around that time. -
Did you have the tranny out when you swapped the motor for some reason? Sounds like you may have to adjust the 4WD lever. If you take apart the console around the shifter there should be an adjusting nut under there......if memory serves me rite.
