Replacement Headlights? HELP!
cubastreet replied to GoldDiggerRoo's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The lights may not be as bad as you think, the wiring might be dodgy too. Try running wires direct from the battery to one, if it's a whole lot brighter then you have bad wiring, normally the earth connection but if the wiring from the dash is bad it can be fixed by running a fused (10-15A) wire from the battery to an automotive relay and have the lighting feed from the dash switch that relay. old sealed beam lights aren't as good as halogens but they shouldn't be too bad either. -
OK, better get it back on topic! Still not sure why I love my brumby. A mate saw it for the first time and as he always calls a spade a spade he just came out and said: "so what's so special about that car then?" Nothing's that special about it really, it's just great to drive. it's not fast, it doesn't stick to the road like an MR2, the seats aren't all that comfy, but you really feel in touch with the vehicle and the road when you're driving. when the going gets rough you slip into 4WD. When the going gets rougher it's 4WD low. Awesome.

Sorry, but veering off topic again: I really admire porsche for sticking with the 911. They took a format that everyone was saying was ridiculous (rear engine, RWD) and have stuck with it for so many years. Sure, the engine's gained watercooling, the car's now got traction control, brakes that WORK etc., but after more than 40 years, it is still recognisable by the non nar enthusiast as the same car.

What to offer..80 Brat
cubastreet replied to DrKrazy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Start low. Perhaps go down there with 500 in your pocket and offer him half that. Tell him it'll go to a good home and you live nearby so he'll get to see it done up and running again. The guy must be sick of seeing it abandoned in his driveway by now. It won't hurt to start low, he won't punch you for it and it gives you a good point to bargain from. -

Suspension Bushes '81 Brat
cubastreet replied to waimaks's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Not sure, I heard that the engine's a straight swap from a 1600 to 1800 so I'm guessing they're the same. Don't know about single/dual range tranny mounts. -

I was pretty tempted by those three vortexes up north on trademe. Pretty sure the 81 is the same as the 80 except 4 the engine, problem is that when you go to a parts place and ask for parts they think the important thing is the year and the engine size. However by then the leone had a different chassis for the 1800 but the brumby didn't. All the parts I bought like balljoints etc have been the ones specced for an 81 1600 leone. They were real cheap tho, like $20 each. It's not just that I have trouble with tho. I have 8 '78 mitsi lancer as well with a 4g36 engine. the new guy at the parts store kept telling me mitsi never did a 4g36 engine until i pulled the haynes off the shelf next to him and showed him it. good luck! -

Yes they're replacable, and hopefully available. Getting parts for an 81 brumby in NZ can be tricky as they're a crossover year and have the 1800 engine in the 1600 chassis. To make things even trickier, the ones made in NZ (like mine) are slightly different from the jap imports. Hopefully like me you have a patient and helpful parts guy - when I needed a front CV the guy had one in stock with the right spline counts and seal size, but the shaft size on the NZ utes are smaller, they use 2wd shafts. He ordered in one with the same specs on paper for me and luckily it was the right one. Repco aren't too helpful. The guy at the wgtn subaru dealership is pretty helpful too. I think the balljoints and tierod ends are different too. If you don't have a haynes manual, there are a few on trademe pretty regularly - the one for the 70s subaru 1600 is pretty much right for the chassis, and for the engine you can dl the factory service manual from a search on this site. Here's one: http://tinyurl.com/k5eyl Let us know how you go. If you find the bushes I'd like to know how much they are and where you get them from. If you can't find any in NZ, I'm considering making some urethane ones on my lathe but probably not for at least a few weeks until I get my insurance payout from when I got crashed into. -
How long should clutch last?
cubastreet replied to MR_Loyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Don't leave it too long either. Clutch slipping creates heat, and too much heat can cause the surface of the flywheel to craze and glaze over, which can ruin it if it's too bad. -
Would it be possible????
cubastreet replied to bratgrl's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Is that the 'so what exactly is so special about this old car that you want to actually spend time and money on it' look? With my brumby I get about two thirds 'far out that's cool, I didn't know subaru made utes' and one third the above. back on topic, you should be able to get that fabricated without much trouble. It would be nice to set it up so the jump seats could unbolt from the bed, I don't think I'd like to have them permanently installed. -
Yeah, does sound like the module. With some distributors it's caused by a bad connection between the module and the distributor body as the distributor acts as a heatsink. I don't know if this is the case with these modules but it's worth a try, it might just be a case of cleaning it up and bolting it back down.

Free car extravaganza!!!!!
cubastreet replied to nomoaudi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Is it really hot where you are? I would have thought that at 50mph the fan would not have been necessary. Definitely suspect the thermostat, or perhaps an airlock in the cooling system. -
Windshield gaskets Batch One ***Completed***
cubastreet replied to Zefy's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
At that price I'd love a couple, but the shipping to the other side of the world would probably put it through the roof. I don't think it's even worth trying to sort out the logistics of it but if you find you get caught out with people not fronting up or anything then let me know and we might be able to sort something out. -
If it is, it's a pretty rough translation to our alphabet; Japanese doesn't have an x or a v sound, both are very difficult for them to pronounce.

Holy cr*p that's even more undersquare than the average british engine!

You might want to check it's legal in oz too. Here in nz you can only have two dipped and four main beam lights max. You could still wire it up tho so you can flick a switch for the inspection and make it legal when you need to.
