'79 4WD wagon free to good home in New Zealand
cubastreet replied to Ross's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Hope you find a good home for it. I already have one 81 brumby too many, but a wagon would be sweet. -
Windshield Chrome for Gen 1
cubastreet replied to bendecker's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Sorry for the hijack, but have you had a gen1 windscreen seal changed in NZ? Mine is pretty perished, wondering who does it and what they cost as the price I saw for seal alone was like $250 or so. -
Australian dollars. 185.00 AUD = 167.407 USD

Goofy 4wd Problem
cubastreet replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Do you drive while it has a known wheel bearing issue? Do you drive real fast because you can feel the reaper breathing down the back of your neck? -
drop in a chev 350.

Don't know what ea81 prices are like where you are, but I bought two a while back for less than the price of a pair of headgaskets or a cam grind. One decent one and one spare for parts. Hard to get cheaper power than that. Probably easier to get parts for, no mods necessary. Can probably sell your ea71 too. No brainer.

You can't put OHC EA82 heads on your OHC EA71. You an drop an EA81 straight in there for an instant 10% increase in torque and HP. That's real cheap and easy. Get a custom cam for a rough idle. Put the EA71 pistons in an EA81 for higher compression. Weber carb is good.

Looks awesome, well done. Will have to visit you Dunners subie guys when I'm down there next. Do you want the cheviot? I have 4 of them awaiting tyres, would be cool to have a matching spare. Also do you know where to get the nuts for them?

If you have a points disty and no condenser, your points will burn up pretty quickly.
-
It should connect across the distributor points. The body bit connects to your car's body (earth) and the wire to the side of your points that go to the ignition coil.

performance thoughts(just dreaming up thoughts)
cubastreet replied to 87glsubie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
don't forget to get hold of some shorter rods.... -
The diff is a Hitachi R160, also used in Datsuns. They're pretty strong, should be able to handle the power of a turbo EA82 if it's in good condition (the diff, that is). Cheap as to replace anyhow as there's heaps of them. Don't know what's on your car but you can get LSD versions too, or swap out the internals.

ea81 needs new HGs, what else should I do?
cubastreet replied to ferox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah you can use a straight edge of a ruler and feeler gauges, I don't remember what the warpage limits are. Change the valve stem seals too while you've got the heads off. I had to change HGs at my parent's house, didn't have valve spring compressor and now regret it as I burn oil on deceleration (high vacuum sucking oil through valve stems). -
Binding while turning in 4WD

not good for the diffs. not good if you do an emergency stop and one side has more traction than the other. can end in a spin. -

Eaton supercharger off the bay is probably your best bet, maybe a M62 off a merc.

Find another radiator?
-
I spoke to Ian at on the phone a couple of weeks back, he seems legit. Ian, I've bought an RX trans with the insides renovated. No hi/lo, no difflock but awd with 4.11 diffs so I think I'll run with that for now and see how I like it. I was given an ea82 box with hi/lo and can confirm it has no centre diff, just fwd/4wd, I think rx is the only ea box with centre diff.

any kiwis need any parts from an rx rally car?
cubastreet replied to cubastreet's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hi, it doesn't have a bodykit, just lightened bumpers, and no roof scoops sorry. Also, car is in New Zealand. -
Does it need the ea82 flywheel? I'm about to do a 5 speed conversion - I've bought the box etc but not the flywheel as of yet.
-
Met a guy who's parting out his old rx rally car, the body's rusted out. Someone's taken the steering wheel, wheels, seats and struts, I've taken the gearbox and most of the driveline, but available are: ea82t - worked to some point. at the moment condition is unknown as it's been sitting. original computer, no link. I think the radiator looked ok. fibreglass bonnet (and good original) lightened bumpers glass vented front disks All going cheap. pm me if you're interested in anything.

Do all the legacy hi/lo gearboxes have difflock, or just some of them? I want to get one and transplant the insides to an ea 5speed box.

How to: Incressing Boxer rumble? (EA82)
cubastreet replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The firing order does have an effect on the sound - but not the rumble. As the engine fires 1,3,2,4 - left, left, right, right (or is it right, right, left, left)? with a 4-2-1 header or siamese ports on the EAs, only the second ignition on each side benefits from scavenging. Apparently that's what produces the characteristic offbeat boxer sound. -
True? 5 speed D/R boxes are real cheap though, If I got one of those can I put all the D/R AWD stuff in there and make it work?
