  1. I should have asked if the problem was the external leak. I bought a 99 forester 2 years ago and it too has the external leak. I put a bottle of the conditioner in and I just have to top the resivior bottle off every couple of months now. A much better idea than pulling the engine right now. I am not put out by having to check it every so often. Heck, I am always check the fuids anyway, so what is one more. Good luck
  2. It can be done in the car. Clearance is not an issue. Just make sure that you clean the block surfaces very well.
  3. It is a quirk of the keyless entry system. You need to either reconnect the battery with the key in the run position or locate the keyless entry activation button and go thru the steps for your system. It is probably easier to do the key in the run position. Happened when I built a car for my sister. It has an ignition lockout feature. You could also locate the lockout jumper harness and remove it and just put the ignition back to the stock wiring and then you will not have to worry when the keyless module craps out and they do.
  4. You can use a singel din unit and just put a little cubby in the dash for the other din opening. I have a single sony unit in my car and the cubby below is useful for storage. If you need a cubby, let me know as I have a couple laying around.
  5. If it is very cold and you have to do the work outside, make a heavy solution of the detergent and let it sit until the solution gets cold. That should be about an hour and rinse it out. Do it again once or twice and you should have heat again. I wouldn't let it sit over night if it is balow freezing or you may damage the core.
  6. Something I have done tha has worked very well is to take some powdered dishwasher detergent and dissolve it in vey hot water. Take both heater hoses off the core and get as much of the coolant out of the core as possible. Point the heater hoses up and fill the core sithe the very hot detergent solution. Let it sit over night and then flush the core out in the morning. The detergent is a chemical flush that works very well to dissolve any deposits that may be clogging the core. You may have to to this twice, but when I did it I went from absolutely no heat to screamin hot in tow treatments. It is worth a try. Mike
  7. If you are hearing what sounds like soor lock servos the car does have a keyless entry box under the dash. The system will activate a stupid cycle if the battery drains and if the battery is replaced without you doing a specific sequence of events. Look up under the drivers dash and you will see a black box. I may be held in with zip ties or it may be ona bracket, but it will say subaru keyless entry on it. Someone may have put it in there and she never knew it was there. Take the box out or just unplug all of the connections going to it. There will be no more servo sound and the drain will go away. These boxes are a high failure item. I just had the same issue on my sisters OBW and I took the box out and all is fine now. You do not need the box in there for any other function than to run the keyless entry. Trust me on this one and look. Cheers
  8. Do you have the lumbar support on the drivers seat adjusted all the way out? The may give you alot more support in the long run. It sounds like you have some pain in either car and that tells me that you probably have a problem that could use some professional attention. See a Chiropractor and have him/her look at your lower back. Fix the problem before it becomes necessary for more drastic treatments. Just my 2 cents.
  9. Glad to hear that yo are back up and running again. If you have a knock sensor code, you should fix it. The car goes into a retarded mode to prevent detonation and you are surely wasting gas and suffering in performance. The sensor is easy to replace and doesn't cost that much.
  10. If you cleared the codes and they haven't come back, then I wouldn't worry about it. If they come back, then post here and we can help you with them.
  11. If you are talking about a pipe that replaces the cats, you will not have a problem. The Y pipe to the body pipe is the same on the forester and the legacy. The body pipe to the muffler is different and the muffler is also different. Good luck
  12. If it ran with the MAF disconnected and the coolant temp sensor disconnect would kill it I am inclined to say that they both need to be replaced. When you disconnect the MAF the car goes into limp mode and then when you reconnect it the ECU tries to resume it's normal mode. If it runs crappy with the MAF connected I would think that there is something wrong with it. The coolant temp sensor tels the ECU how much gas to give the engine. It may be giving a lean or overly rich startup and that would cause you to have starting problems. A new CTS is only about 25.00 so I would go with new. The MAF is pretty pricey so I would go with a known good used one. If you want an MAF I think I may have one as long as they are the same as the one on a regular outback. I can check that on my end for you. My wife and daughter got up to watch the eclipse and didn't wake me. I was kind of disappointed this morning. I don't think I will live to see another one. Bummer. Good luck
  13. The only time I've seen an ej25 throw a rod bearing is when it was either low on oil or had been overheatied too much previous to the incident. I have a car that has 300k on the original motor and it is running like a champ. Just leaks a bit of oil, surprize , surprize. I think the ej25 is a great motor and I take good care of mine. I think they are prone to failure about the same rate as any other motor. I agree that the 2.2 is a more robust motor, but I wouldn't scrap a 2.5 just to replace it with a 2.2 if the 2.5 was running well.
  14. According to my parts search, you should be fine. The 95 MAF is just fine. If the year is earlier than that let me know and I can tell you if the part is different. Mike
  15. I will check those fuses, but I need the location of the control modules too.
  16. I have a friend that has a 98 forester and he has no blinkers. Where should I start looking and where is the blinker relay/control module. I also need to know where the flasher module is as I have been told that that could also be the problem. Right now he has nothing. Thanks Mike
  17. I have your MAF sitting, waiting to be sent to it's new home. Make me an offer and we can get this thing fixed for you. Mike
  18. I got the MAF for you today at lunch. I can have it boxed and ready to go to you as soon as we strike a deal. Just wanted you to know. Mike
  19. Make me an offer. The one I have is off a 96 outback, so it should be the same as yours. I can have it boxed up and in the mail in a day. Mike
  20. Hey Gary, I like my forester. It is a bit cramped in the back, but I love the drivers seat positioning. Our Outback is the car for family trips. Definitely has more room in the back. I would offer the guy 7 or 800. You may need to replace the entire engine and that is going to cost. I bought my wifes limited with a blown HG for 1000. bt it was in very good condition and the engine was easily fixed. Go and see the car and listen to the motor and see if it is worth the work and funds. Personally, I hate the damage that dogs can cause and the visible stuff is worse ahd more than difficult to repair. People keep their kids from spilling in the car, but they let their dogs go nuts and basically destroy the interior. I don't understand that mentality. I bought a 98 limited for 500 with blown HG's and such bad wet dog smell inside that I ended up having to part out the car. I couldn't get the smell out. It was a nauseating smell. Beautiful car otherwise. Good luck.
  21. Not a bad looking car. The trans problem sounds like the bushings are worn out and that is an easy fix. Personally, I would jump on it. In the future I would not use synthetic oil as these engines have a tendency towards leakage. The synthetic will only make it worse. Use straight dino oil or a blend. D/R trannies aren't all that common anymore, but a good idea. I live up in Richmond and I can help you out if necessary. Let me know what you decide. Mike
  22. The tranny has it's own comtrol module and the light you are getting is most likely the duty c solenoid gone bad, but you need to pull the tranny codes to be sure. You will need to search for tpulling tranny codes to get the procedure. You cannot get them with a scan tool. If you need an MAF let me know, I have one sitting in my shed.
