  1. I am working on a car for a friend and he has an issue where the airbag light is on and so is the ABS light. I know about the clockspring for the airbag and that may very well be what it is, but is there a way to trouble shoot these systems? If so, can someone instruct me on how to do so? Thanks guys
  2. Just for information sake, I have been running K&N filters in my 2 forresters and outback or several years now. I have not had any problems with the filters or driveabilty due to MAF issues. I think the problem arises when people clean the filters and then over oil the filters. If the filter is properly maintained, there should be no problems
  3. Sounds like your neutral safety switch is shot. It is on the passengers side of the tranny and not all that difficult to replace.
  4. I have a 99 forester and I think it is time for new struts and springs. There is a 2007 forester with very low miles on it in the JY and I am curious as to whether those struts will work on my car. Thanks in advance.
  5. The plug is on the passengers side inside the spare tire well. It may be taped up to another wire, but I know for a fact that it is there.
  6. Hey guys: For some reason I was not getting my notifications that you had given me some help. Anyway, we finally figured out what it was. The car finally threw a code for the MAF and I replaced it and she hasn't had any problems since. Thank you so very much for all of your help. I am so glad that she now has a reliable car. Stalling out randomly is not a good thing for a new driver.
  7. My daughter's best friend has a 96 legacy 2.2 and it has one issue that is driving me up a wall. The engine runs fine, but periodically it will just shut off. It doesn't sputter and die, it just shuts off. It will restart immediately. The car has had the cam and crank sensors and the computer replaced and the coil too. it is still doing it. It did have an aftermarket security system in it that I pulled out and today I am going to check all of the connections that were spliced in to see if there is a short somewhere. Does anyone have any suggestions or has had the same problem? I am going crazy trying to make this car run consistently. Thanks for any and all suggestions
  8. How long are you going to be in MN? I can run to the local JY and grab you a throttle position sensor and mail it to you if you'd like.
  9. The biggest problem you have is the purge valve control module. That malfunction will just kill your performance. You have one on order and I think that will fix a lot of your troubles. You can go and get the sea foam throttle body cleaner and follow the instructions for use. It is a lot easier than using the liquid and trying to pour it down any opening. You may have a bad throttle position sensor, but I think when you replace the purge valve control you will se the car run much better. Good luck on your trip back home.
  10. I have a 99 forester that the drivers door will unlock, but the others won't from either the switch or the remote. I am thinking that the door lock timer has gone bad. My question is; so you guys agree and where is the little bugger located in that car? Thanks Mike
  11. Is that a hard solenoid to get too? If I can get to it easily, it would be worth replacing. If it has to go to a shop, then I will probably just swap out the trans.
  12. I have a 96 Legacy outback with an automatic transmission problem. The car has 325k on the original trans and the situation is this: When the car is started in the morning it will go into gear, but it won't shift until it gets good and warmed up. Then it seems to shift okay. If the car is started and then warmed up the problem seems to be much less of an issue. I am thinking that this is the early stages of transmission failure, but I want some input from you guys. All suggestions and opinions are welcome. Thanks
  13. Thanks guys. Turned out that he had a cracked intake boot and the IAC was sticking. Replaced both of those and now the car idles at 1000 rpm.
  14. Thanks guys. Right now the coumputer is not throwing any codes. I will look at all the obvious things first and I will clean the throttle body.
  15. I have a friend whose daughter has a 90 loyale and it seems to have a constant high idle. he says that the idle stays around 2000 all the time. I am going to look at it tomorrow and just wanted some suggestions as to possible causes. Any direction will help me gat it fixed faster. Thanks
  16. Thanks Bratman, that helped alot. I don't think I am going to go that route. Just going to get another 2.2 and derop it in.
  17. I have a friend with a 2.5 DOHC in a 98 forester. I have available a 99 2.5 SOHC motor. I know that the wiring harness is different, so that would have to be swapped over, but if I do that can the SOHC be dropped in the car? I was curious if the cam timing might be off and thought that I might be able to swap the cam off a 2.2, so I have wondered about that too. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
  18. I am building a forester for my daughter and it doesn't have cruise. I know how to install it, but I need to know if there is a difference between the cruise computer for a manual tranny and an automatic or are they interchangeable? If anyone has a cruise control system that they want to sell, please let me know.
  19. Gary: I have replaed several of those sensors and I have Never taken the PCV hose off the block. I haven't removed the IACV either. It makes the jpb a bit mor tedious, but not removing those extra parts made the job go a little faster. I also lost less coolant. Good luck.
  20. I hope you put anti seize on the splines or you are going to encounter this problem again.
  21. A friend of mine who is a subie master mechanic said to oosen the axle nut and soak it with PB blaster. Then he said to take the car for a spirited ride around the bleck. He sait that always breaks the ones that are stubborn loose. I haven't tried it thugh. I am just going to replace the whole knuckle shen the time comes. I already know that my right side is frozen. Been rebooted on the car once already.
  22. Thanks and the guy is just going to have to deal with the egr CEL. He really doesn't care as he threw a rod bearing and he wants the car back.
  23. I have two 92 ej22 engines that run really well. The question I have is, can the harness from a newer 22 or a 2.5 be swapped onto that motor so that I can drop the engine into a 97 outback? Just curious. It looks like it is doable, but I wanted to see if anyone has done it. I have several harnesses, so that is not an issue for me. Thanks in advance. Mike
  24. Gary: No offense taken. It has just been a while since I have done one and Loking in the jy hasn't been all that helpful. Thanks again for the info.
  25. I know I am definitely not getting any younger. A senior moment it is. Thanks for everyone's help.
