That definitely sounds like valve train noise to me too. I had this happen once after a hg job and I am meticulous about getting the buckets into the exact same hole they came out of. I would pull the valve covers and check the clearance of each and every one of the buckets. I am sure you are going to find that at least one of them is loose. you may also have one too tight due ot an inadvertant swap, so check them all. I know this sucks, but you will have to do it in order to fix the problem.

Thought I'd let you guys know. I looked at the forester (finally) and, Nipper, you were right. The plastic grommet had come off the clutch pedal. I am going to find another as the little prong that holds it on the pedal broke off. Hopefully, I can find one soon. I miss my cruise. Let me tell you, 1200 miles without it made me unhappy. Thanks for all of your suggestions.

Okay guys, I need to help. I have a 99 Forester and this past weekend I had to drive from Richmond Virginia to Atlanta Georgia and when I got on the highway I found out that my cruise control no longer works. 1200 miles in three days with no cruise, I was not a happy camper. I am getting no check engine light, no ABS light, my horn works fine and my blinker signals work fine. I know that the roll connector can cause the cruise control to go out, however, I thought that the horn or blinker signals should be affected as well. When I push the button on the dash the cruise light comes on, so I don't think the problem is there. I'm thinking it's either the switch in the steering wheel, the cruise computer or the actuator under the hood. I guess what I'm asking is; where should I start looking, or does anyone have experience with an issue like this? One question I did come up with is; is there a relay that is actuated by the dashboard switch and if so, where is it? I guess I need to rule out the clutch and brake switches as well. So, where should I start?

I am working on a friends 99 forester and the car threw the code P0170 for fuel trim. I checked with a subie mechanic and he told me to replace the front O2 sensor. I did that and cleared the codes. Now I am getting a P0130 front O2 sensor and the P 0170 code. What did I do wrong and What should I look at next? Thanks guys.

Sounds like your cone washe got all chewed up when it got loose. Replace the cone washer and get the flat washer from a dealer or JY. The flat washer is not actually flat and it works like a lock washer. It actually has printed on it which side goes out and you can see that it had a taper to it. Onece you have those two you can put it all together and be on your way. Do it right the first time and you should be okay. Also, look at the splines on the hub and make sure you have enough left to make that hub reliable. The shaft material is much harder than the hub and I have seen many of the hubs walloed out. If you only have a third or so of the splines left, you will wnat to replace the hub too. It is only going to fail and leave you stranded again. Goof luck -
Not to worry, the lifters are hydraulic so they will make up for any differences in the rockers. I have taken mine out and just put them in a box while rebuilding an ez82 engine and never had a lick of noise when I was done. Not sure about the trick that was possted, but you can just use some grease on the rockers to hold them inplace and when the car is started the grease will dissolve. That is, if you are doing the rebuild with the engine in the car. Personally, I find the whole job much easier wht the engine on a stand and then I can be sure that all surfaces are totaly clean too. Good luck

Keep it simple and don't go looking for lions when there is a cat in the room. It really sounds like a fuel delivery problem and since you had the car siting for a year you probably got gum in the filter. Start there and replace the filter. If that doesn't fix the problem, then do a pressure test on the fuel system to check the quality of the pump, but I am willing to bet that the problem is in the filter. Aslo run some fuel injector cleaner thru the system to make sure the injector is working properly. I like the lucas stuff or seafoam. Another thing that happens is rust in the tank clogging the pickup and you can easily pull the inspection cover and look in the tank for debris. I doubt that is the problem, but it is another check you can do before throwing alot of other stuff into the mix. Good luck
