  1. I have a 99 outback with the 2.5 DOHC engine and 193k miles on it. Normally the engine runs quietly and smoothly. However, after taking a long trip, as I did yesterday (600 miles) the engine had a tick this morning on startup. It only lasted for a few seconds, but I'm curious as to what the cause could be? Do I need to reseal the oil pump, or is ther another issue I need to look at? Thanks
  2. The 2.5 engine blew a HG and the owner decided to replace only one side. He didn't have the heads resurfaced and I don't think he used the Subaru gaskets either. He said that as soon as he put it back in it ran for about five minutes and began to overheat and blow white smoke. My plan is to get the engine and break it down completely. Replace the bearings, pistons and rings. Then use new Subaru gaskets on resurfaced heads. Should make the engine like new. A bit more comfort for my wife, knowing the level of work done before putting it in.
  3. Thanks for the info. I think I'll pass on this car. I want something that will be an easy swap. I also have an opportunity to buy a 2.5 with 160k and a bad HG for less than 100.00. I think I will buy that one and rebuild it for her car. I don't think it is a 96 engine so I won't have the premium gas issues either. Any other advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks again guys. I'm liking the jmp to the outbacks. My 99 is running great, I just have to put a little more into the 96 and I will feel better about my wife driving it daily. If she drove a stick she'd be in the 99, but alas she hates sticks.
  4. My wife's 96 outback has 243,000 miles on it and the engine is beginning to make noises that sound like rod knock. That said I have found a 91 legacy with a 2.2 engine that was rolled over. The engine only has 113,000 miles on it and I can have the whole car for 300.00. That will give me the exhaust parts I will need as well. My question is whether this engine will bolt right up to her present transmission (auto AWD). If so, How much horsepower am I going to lose? Should I do this or go for finding a rebuildable 2.5 and replacing the engine with that? Need some experienced input. Thanks Guys.
  5. I have a friend that I built a wagon for. He was driving one night and heard a funny noise. Looked under the hood and saw the fan wobbling. He decided to cut the belt so he wouldn't damage the radiator. This in 90 degree weather. Needless to say he got about five miles down the road and the engine blew. I put a new one in for him and he overheated that one too. The third engine I put in leaked oil and he knew it. He locked that one up about three months later running with no oil. Now he starts driving his wifes subie. He's travelling down the highway at 65 or so (4000 rpm) and the engine comes apart. No oil agian. The hole in the block is big enough to put my hand inside the crank case. One rod broke at the crank and anothe bent into an S and that piston shattered. Now my best friend has that car and I am replacing the engine for him so he can sell it. Some people just never learn. four engines in 9 months. Can you say Stupid. If I can find my Wife's camera I'll post some pics of the blown block
  6. I'm wondering about torque bind. The fluid is new and just had the tranny flushed last week. How can I check for torque bind? The present tires are all matched, but I don't know the history of the car.
  7. Here's the info on my new car. I got a 96 outback with a blown HG. Replaced the HG and had the heads reworked. Engine runs like a top, but the tranny shifts hard and sometimes doesn't come down from overdrive easily. It seems slow to go into overdrive also. If you put on the A/C the problem gets worse. I was thinking of replacing the tranny with a JDM, but I want to get everyones opinion first. Maybe there is something else I should look at first. The car has 243,000 miles on the original drivetrain. Body and interior wize it is in great shape with no rust. My wife like it, but is complaining about the power issues, which I think are tranny related. Help me out here, I want my wife to be happy and feel safe in this car. It was a cheap purchase at 500.00 so putting some money into it isn't an issue. I just want to spend the money wizely. Thanks Guys. You are always so helpful.
  8. I am new to the legacy line so bear with me. I have a 1999 outback wagon and I have begun to notice a tick when I first start up the car. Once it is warm or the car has been driven several hundred yards the noise is gone. Is this piston slap or valves out of adjustment? What is piston slap and how serious a problem is it. The engine has 193k on it right now and is the original. What other potential issues do I need to worry about. I also have a 1996 outback that makes a noise when the auto tranny is shifting. Sounds like a quick rapping noise. Is this piston slap or do I have a rod bearing going? I'm thinking about a japanese pulled motor for repoacement and want to know if I should bother. By the way, both cars have the 2.5 DOHC engine. Thanks
  9. In a 1999 outback with an ej25 dohc motor is that going to have hydraulic or solid lifters? Also, is there a recommended interval for the replacement of the oil pump? Do these motors get the TOD like the ea82 motors? Thanks for the info
  10. I have a 96 outback that is beginning to have some lower end noise. Not sure if it is piston slap, rod knock or wrist pin, so I am think ing of building another motor for her just in case. Can I mate and ej22 block to ej25 heads? If so, are there any issues that I need to know about or should I just look for an ej25 block with lower miles on it? Thanks
  11. Just curious, I just finnished resealing the engine for my wifes 96 outback and I was wondering if the oil pump can be resealed like we do for the ea82 motors? Is this an issue with these engines? If they can be rebuilt, where do I get the kit from? Thanks By the way the car is running like a champ, but one lifter is stuck a bit. Not bad, just lost pressure from sitting for two weeks. I'm going to put in some seafoam and see if that gets rid of the gunk. Mike
  12. I'm going to drop the rebuilt motor into my wife's 96 outback this weekend. I noticed that there is a tag telling me to open the bleeder when I fill the cooling system to prevent any air bubbles. Does anyone know where this bleeder is? If not, what is the best way to fill the system to prevent air locks in the passages? Thanks
  13. If i decide to swap out a 2.2 sohc for the 2.5 dohc that is in my outback now what will I need? Is it a straight swap, do I use my intake and wiring, etc? Thanks
  14. how should it look? Anyone have any pictures? Can I use an injector out of a 2.2 to replace it?
  15. Hers's the history: I got this car because the owner thought he had blown a HG. Ater a through check my mechanic could find nothing wrong with the HG, but a ten days later it started leaking coolant from the water pump. I replaced the pump( with new not reman) and the car has been running great. Yesterday the car started to run warm (about 2/3 on the guage) so I stopped and looked and the leak at the pump is back. Any ideas? I realize that I could have gotten a bad pump but I wanted some input. Also note that if I ran the car without the radiatior cap it wouldn't leak as much and it remained cool. When I put the cap back on the leak turned into a stream and the temp began to go up again. Any thoughts would be appreciated. The pump has only been in the car for a month so it is warrantied.
  16. Pulled the heads and the cams only to find out that one of the exhaust valves is burned. Off to the shop for resurfacing and a valve job. Hope to have the heads back by next thursday and then I can put the engine back together.
  17. Engine out and on a stand. Will do the job tomorrow. I'll let you know how it goes.
  18. I am in the process of replacing the head gaskets on an ej25 DOHC engine and I was wondering if I need to pull the cams off before I remove the heads from the block? I was reading the Haynes manual and it says to remove the cams, but they do not seem to be in the way of the head bolts so I was wondering if the removal was really necessary? By the way, I am using the Subaru metal gaskets for replacement. Thanks for your help. Mike
  19. I am in the process of putting new head gaskets in a 96 outback 2.5 dohc. I figure that since i have the engine apart I should replace all of the coolant hoses. I do not know how to order the two small hoses that go from the water jacket to the throttle body. Does anyone have a diagram so I can figure out the names of these hoses so I can order them? Any help would be appreciated.
  20. I have the opportunity to buy a 96 outback wagon with a blown HG. It has 220k on it and an auto tranny. The seller wants 500.00 for it and says it is in otherwise good shape. Any issues I should know about? Should I jump on this? I can do a HG without any trouble, so that is not an issue, Ijust want to know wht I am getting into before I make the jump. Thanks
