Who can Identify this noise?
stevo151617 replied to bgd73's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i would leave it, because it definately sounds like a blower! honestly i would take the belts off and run it, see if it makes the noise, if so then you might be looking at a timing chain issue, if not, you might be looking at a belt rub, or bad bearings in the compressor, or any other belt driven component. my idler seized up on the inside belt....years ago, still sticks in there, just doesnt do anything, cant push myself to cut it off, seeing as it is useless......u didnt actuallly think i would even try to get an idler for a 91 loyale in ny...did you? theres like 2 of these cars within 100 miles of me...and i found them both!p.s. try not to run the car too long without the belts....itll kill the battery, and overheat your engine.. :banghead: :banghead: -
i had been noticing poor wiper movment, so i bought new wipers. a few days later they stopped in the middle of a rain storm. i brought the car home and started inspecting the system.i decided to put a new wiper motor in because it seemed to me the brushes inside the motor would be bad. i have full operation when holding the wiper stick in (mist setting) and when i let go of the stick it stops, or completes the motion, then while the wipers are going back up they stop less than half way across the windshield. i am sure that the motor is good, because i hot wired it and it still worked as if i was powering the motor through the switch, so that eliminates the motor or the switch, i took the hood off and removed all the plastic air dam peices, i can see the linkages and they look good, no excessive looseness or binding. since i replaced the motor, it functions the same as ever (weak) like i said, only continuous function in the mist setting (stick pulled toward me) low, high and intermittant functions are limited to half a sweep. although if i pull the mist after they "stall out" half way up the glass, they will continue their movment, but at mist speed. please help! im really mad here!

you did alot of mean things to that car. mean things that give me feelings in my pants.... you did alot before you lifted too....i guess my loyale is worth more than im getting from it! by the way...what state do you live in? i wish i could find places like that to drive!

yeah i cant believe you would get stuck in that.....are you sure nobody pulled the e-brake?

i have a 91 loyale, its got no power at all. with the stock 13" wheels i run a wintermaster 185/80r13 tire, as far as a lift goes, i wouldnt go more than 3 inches. if your subaru has stock 14" rims, im assuming it should sit a little higher than mine did. but with the tires i put on i gained about an inch, maybe an inch and a half. if you raise the vehicle more than 3 inches overall (whether its from the tires, springs, spacers...) you will need to adjust your camber angle (the angle at which the wheel sits related to the ground...either the top is too far out or in, or the bottom too far out or in). plus the lift may not agree with the working angles of your half shafts, which are a common weakness in the loyale. as far as squeezing power from that engine...good luck! if you dont mind the check engine light on constantly, there are alot of things you can do. im sure you can make some kind of o2 sensor simulator. you can buy a k&n air filter, if you have access to a machine shop or some nice tools you can get a pulley kit made. basically what i would do is wait for some snow and know that your prepared, and smile as your car gets 27 mpg city while the guy next to you is getting 16 highway in his h3.i once thought my subaru could do more than it can, but i learned quickly that you either go big and fast or you go home. the most you can get out of that motor is going to be another 5 to 10 horsepower. the loyale is a dependable, long lasting car, it has its problems, but what doesnt? i bought my loyale for 150$ and i expected it to last a few weeks, now its spring here in new york and i still refuse to drive my camaro based solely on the gas mileage! rock on!

i have a 91 loyale, 5 speed. i changed the oil in the trans. but i just used some 80w90 i had lying around in the garage. my question is what oil should i use? i heard royal purple makes some good stuff. i was just wondering if anyone knew what oil would give me the best result without having to find out for myself! thanks!

Before I see mechanic: shifter vibration/tranny
stevo151617 replied to Cynthia's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah, my 91 loyale does that, its my beater, so i dont really care, but to me it always felt like a problem through the high end of first and second gear, some people just deal with these problems and find out what it was when it finally causes some monumental problem, i am one of those people! however, my first assumption about my "mystery vibration" was somewhat of a normal operation, and after changing the gear oil inside the trans, the noise was unchanged. im not sure, but if your transmission was replaced with a used one "more than likely" you may have received an "abused" tranny. or it could be as simple as the tranny mount bushings. if the cv shafts are 2 years old, it is possible you did get some cruddy ones and they may need replacment, especially if you only paid 275$ to have it done. i dont know alot about subaru's but if they do use a shifter bushing, that would actually be your best bet! -
1991 loyale, dash lights inop, sometimes

dash lights, what dash lights??
stevo151617 replied to Buddythedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
take out the fusebox, push it aside, look up in the hole, theres 4 wire leads going into a "bracket" that is where your relays are, my left headlight was dim and all my tails and dash were out, i replaced the relay with the green connector going to it, all the relays are the same on the car, with a few minor acceptions, take it to a parts store, advance auto parts stocks this relay but i got the last one at my advance. -

looking back, i wish i never went to college to study gm cars and truck because they are based on common knowledge. voltage is voltage, psi are psi, with a subaru the rules are totally different! i love it, its alot more challenging while at the same time alot more failsafe. like my relay, when this thing went it didnt just kill the left headlamp but it also killed the dash lights, which told me something was wrong, while only dimming the tail lamps due to the resistor inside the relay mechanism. the only complaints i have with my 91 loyale is with aquiring parts, i had to steal a rear wiper from a mazda mpv van...honestly, gm cars and trucks are great initally, they have few problems off the line, with the exception of the cobalt which is the greatest abomination of the motor vehicle ever. but as soon as they get to be about 20-30k they fall apart! nothing serious but enough to wish you bought an import. the subaru may be a pain to get parts for but atleast you dont need them near as often! god bless the subaru! the greatest most dependable vehicle on EARTH! rock on subarus! -

where is the relay located? im clueless! i see four fusable links under the hood on the left fender side and a fusebox under the dash! i appreciate your help! -
i got home today, went over to my subaru and it started right up. this after hours of toying with it yesterday with no result. so i pulled it right into the garage. the dash lights were still out and all the tail lights and license plate lights were still out, i had the right headlight, but the left was dim. after replacing the left headlight with a known good light i had no difference at all. i then turned the headlights off on the stick from the column and put them into the parking light range, this gave me dash lights, tail lights, sidemarker lights and license plate lights. but then i saw there is a switch on top of the column that also controlled the parking lights, with the headlights on and this switch on, i had all lights, all the way around, except for that left headlight. that is EXACTLY WHAT IS HAPPENING and thats all i know until this weekend when i probe every wire in that car!maybe someone shoot some advice my way? maybe some advice on where to get the schematics for the system? that would be great! rock on!

hey guys, its "my subaru is stuck in 4wd" guy. so i figured out what was wrong with the 4wd, its all set, but i noticed toniight that i have no dash lights, license plate lights, tail lights and my left headlight is dim, i checked the fuse for the tail/plate lights. stop lamps are fine, i pulled the harness out for the rear tail lights, they are on, but dim, i think i might have a bad ground, somewhere, just wondering if anyone could offer some advice. maybe this has happened to someone else? i need to drive this thing at night! no dash lights sucks, but no tail lights is the worst.

1991 loyale 5sp stuck in 4wd! HELP!
stevo151617 replied to stevo151617's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks guys, i decided to get off my ARS and check it out for myself. i didnt see the cable that went from the vaccuum diapragm to the side of the tranny. and thats where my problem was, see, when vaccuum is applied to the diapragm, it pulls, well when it pulls that cable, it hooks to a linkage on the tranny. i found that the cable threads had broken and the linkage was not attached to the cable, finding that it is in a bad spot i have decided to cut away part of the floor in my car to rig a manual control to go in and out of 4wd...a lever. see when the 4wd button was pushed on the stick, the cable would contact the linkage and actually push it into 4wd then when i press it agan, the cable would come back and not bring the linkage with it. a real bad design if you ask me, but i cant complain! thanks again for all of your help! -

1991 loyale 5sp stuck in 4wd! HELP!
stevo151617 replied to stevo151617's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
so if i jack up a wheel (any wheel, or just one of the rears?) and manually turn it with my hand it should pop out of 4wd? what happens when i need to use 4wd again? do you think it will go in? and will i have to jack it up every time i want to come out of 4wd? i back up straight about 5 car lengths every morning on my way out of my driveway. is this happening beause of the tires i put on it? is this a common thing with subarus? i know nothing about them. i spent 2 years studying gm cars and trucks in college and i have ASE's and this car always leaves me scratching my head...valve covers especially...they were tough! thanks for any help you can give me... -
