stronger springs for the front of an EA81?
Uberoo replied to Uberoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
damn, RX's are kinda hard to find in pull and saves... -
I have an idea of using a free 35 HP deutz two cylinder diesel engine to power a subaru offroad toy.I checked the specs and it makes 88 Lbs of torque which is close enough to the EA81 to not really matter. However, weight wise its a whole nother ballgame the little diesel weighs 155 KG or 341 LBS where the subaru weighs about 195 lbs.I wont need a radiator so that cuts like 30 lbs of weight difference off(radiator, water pump, coolant, etc). That still is a minimum of 116 lbs heavier.I will probally need some really strong springs to hold the front end up.I know ford tempo springs work in EA82's, I wonder if they would work in an Ea81?I suppose I could crank the suspension all the way up which might help a bit. Vehicle is question is an 84 GL 4x4 wagon...

I never said anything about an EA81:grin:

With stock 175/70/13 tires at 2200 RPM in 4th gear (.769) with stock 3.9 rear end ratio I go 45 MPH.What tire size Would yield 55 MPH at the same RPM,same mechanical gear ratio.

its as tall as a suberban-which means its as tall as a stock fullsize truck..awesome.So when do we get to see pics of it offroad?

my 84 GL 4x4 wagon seems to be running rich.the gauge goes fairly fast, but at 60 MPH you can SMELL that it is running rich(mild exhaust leak). That and it hesitates when ever I touch the gas, for a split second or so then it goes.which kinda makes for a jerky ride. can this be fixed for cheap or would I be better off ignoring it and the crappy MPG until I can buy a weber?

um so yea, I am a *********************.What I thought was a clutch cable was atually the hill holder cable:dead: and somehow the bracket that holds the clutch pedal is broken...

Could always try an axle disconect. with a welded diff.Like this drawing I made along time ago shows: http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n45/Uberoo/Subaru%20stuff/?action=view¤t=axledisconnect.jpg

did better than I thought.although the drive still ate the steering wheel..

Why is it so hard for someone to HAVE the CORRECT listing for parts in there computers?I ordered a clutch cable last friday.Said it would be here today. ok. So I order a Clutch cable for an 84 GL wagon. I got this cable that is about a foot longer, has some grometts for passing through the firewall, and and a connecting piece at one end to attach to the clutch pedal.Thats AN EA82 fricken clutch cable.Called the dealership about it.It seems the person for inputing all the information messed up and put in that an EA82 body style and engine starts in 84. WTH? Didint it start in 85 with quad headlights, then in 86 it went to the composite housing. So how is it off by a year?So I asked them to look up for an 83 then.Different part number, well no sh**. There were gonna get it here by possibly friday or next monday. I told them for the wait I might as well go online and get the stupid thing.See if they can overnight it or something or I am going somewhere else. The found one in spokane that will be here tomarrow morning. I sort of expect that sorta crap from schucks or autozone or the like but not from a damn subaru dealership. If it wasnt scewed up it would have here last saterday...GRRR, not the day that I was planning on going wheeling... That I dont really like educating a subaru parts guy on the fundamental differences between an EA81 and an EA82.Important things like how the valves are moved in each engine and when they changed over etc...

DR is easy to find.If anything you could find a carbed model with a DR and swap in the fuel injection-much easier than swapping transmissions. You may however want to just go for anything with a DR then later swap in a fuel injected EJ22. yes, swampers and tsl's do look good but unless you are going offroad alot stick with all terrains.

well I didnt get the diff welded today. someone ran off with my tools.or at least all of the tools that I needed, like a 3/16 punch, any metric socket or wrench larger than 15mm,and beer.So I suppose I will just do it at my buddies shop before we go play on thursday...I have to go there anyway to get the rest of my tractor tires...
-
maybe to protect against twigs and tall grass maybe..
-
hey BTW where did you put the fuel tank/cell?
-
Does the subaru limited slip (non viscous) use clutch packs to engage? If so you can add shims to the packs and change the order of the packs to get a much tighter limited slip.In theory you could set it so tires could still manage turns but lock up enough to help in offcamber/wheel of the ground situations. That way you wouldnt need to pull an axle driving on the street.Just a thought...

Is there a way to weld the rear diff without removing it from the car?I would like to weld mine tommarow but I am not really looking forward to pulling the diff..

what is with the back of scotts wagon?
-
I like it. I like it alot!

didnt you just replace those doors?

here is some pics that I took of it. http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n45/Uberoo/Subaru%20stuff/

how is the glare off the hood?
-
its a joke.A couple of pages later the OP was like the jokes up.Then went and said that he and his buddies were board so they went and welded the pinion to the ring gear to mess with everyone's heads. The gears come from a toyota 8.75 that formally housed a limited slip.

I drew this up in paint about what it might look like with standard OD, black, and brown. I supose I could change the colors around so it was either in night camo or urboan camo... thats kinda cool,I guess when I turned it to a jpeg it made it look like spoiled lettuce.

he got me a free subaru parts car instead.
