    what if?

Im thinking about making a EA81 wagon into a offroad only buggy. It will have 26" tractor tires. It will hopefully be powered by a 2 cylinder diesel engine. One problem is the engine is underpowered. Im looking for suggestst for stuff to remove to make lt lighter. here is a list of stuff I have thought of remove front fenders remove rear seat remove carpet and headliner remove mirrors remove exterior trim remove plastic bumper covers remove grill remove all side and rear windows remove roof after windsheild frame Put rollcage in car to hold body up Bob the back end to the wheel wells Remove AC componets Remove stereo except CB remove taillights remove hood remove wiper cover plate remove door guts so doors are just skins use fence latches to hold front doors shut, weld rear skins shut Remove 16" lenght or so from behind the front doors use clear vinyl sheets for windows replace tailgate with mesh or bars. Shorten front as far as I can because of shorter engine. tarp material for roof exhaust for diesel will be a stack straight out though where the hood used to be... Possibly remove the dash after all that it should be very light...

    what if?

89 dodge W250 cummins turbo diesel. The difference in pumps is why I can run engine oil.The old pump on the 7.3 uses a rotary vane style mechanism.over time the vanes get stuck, and thats just with diesel...The pump on my truck doesnt have that problem.plus I run my oil though a centrifuge at about 3.6 Gph. it removes all of the metal in the oil, most of the carbon, and all of the water in a single pass.I would say the average size particle left is .5 micron and below.although those old ford IDI diesels are alot more tolerant to thicker fuels...My truck I had to put a piston style lift pump on the truck and a fuel heat exchanger-fuel runs through oil cooler- the oil cooler has a shell around it that flows hot engine coolant around the oil cooler.thus heating the fuel... and because of all that its running close to 65-70% oil in the winter,in the summer it runs just about 100%...

    what if?

Used engine oil contains more BTU's than diesel. In my truck I found a 6 MPG difference between used engine and diesel.on diesel my truck gets 20 mpg,on oil-26... I use the subaru as a way to get places without actually needing to spin the tires fast. With the tractor tires there is no point in spinning the tires faster because the car just goes faster...even with an EA81,the tires gripped so well that it couldnt break the tires loose to fling mud on the car... I dont know how much I can cut out of the body and get it as light as possible...the glass is a real heavy part...although I could replace the roof with a rollcage and some fabric, then maybe have a propane heater behind me or something.... and with that engine I probally can shorten the front a fair bit,I suppose I could bob the rear, maybe even cut a section out of the middle...

my diesel is practically free because I burn used engine oil in by diesel as a fuel.It passes though a centrifuge so its cleaned... I hope I wont have to many problems with it offroad... in thoery I could use 8 forward gears to motivate it,if I- separt hi/lo from 4wd. and if I can row though both sticks...

You combine a Free 2 cylinder non turbo diesel rated at 16 HP and a free 4wd subaru wagon that weighs 2000 LBS... I dunno but Im gonna try.see if I can make a really cool offroad rig.especially because I have a set of 26" tractor tires that will fit the subaru... supposidly a 23 hp diesel will make a geo metro go 65 mph.Certainly not fast, but it will move it..So I wonder how 16 hp will do?If nothing eles I suppose I could turbo the little sucker... the idea is that my diesel truck is virtually free to drive and a 4x4 toy is not because it runs on gas...but what if it ran on diesel.... Smiley hey then it really will be a little tractor...
  6. dielectric grease maybe?
  7. I probally would find a way to jam the thing in "power" fulltime... I have a 74 colt station wagon.I almost regret turning it into a demolition derby car,but it had no title and a few other issues...

    roll over point

so basically is damn near 60*
  9. just wondering, Anyone happen to know the degree from horizontal that a stock EA81 or EA82 will flop onto its side or roof? I was thinking about just pulling my offroad toy so it flops on its side just to see when it goes past that point.Although admittedly the stock carb will flood out long before you roll.Although the sudden stopping or bucking may just roll you anyway...
  10. scott, do you have any pics of the dovetail under the hood?I might do that on my next 4x4 toy..
  11. scott did dovetailing the front of your wagon help any?
  12. Why that much lift for only 33" tires? You can fit 33" tires with only an 8" lift. Put some 40"s or 44"s.just have the axles regeared to 5.13:1 or something...
  13. im confused? We are talking about old subarus.I thought old subarus had a self oiling underside from all of the oil leaks?
  14. I dont have a parts car other than the EA82.Everything that wouldnt swap over would have to be bought at pull and save.in the worse case senario it would cost me 117 bucks for everything...
  15. I was thinking of buying an 83 GL wagon. Its got the DR and 4 speed. For $40. the bad thing? Its missing a bunch of parts.Stuff like most of the windows, one rear tail light, right rear drum brake, right front brake assembly, and practially everything except the strut on the left front.oh yea its also missing a distributor,a radiator, and possibly the starter may need to be replaced.the starter is sitting on top of the engine for no particular reason..so i have no idea if it works. it would turn into a offroad toy. Most likly trailered to places.maybe even turn it into a buggy.. So do you think 40 bucks is a good price when it needs so much stuff? Also what is needed to bolt a EA82 carby distributor on the EA81?I ask because I have one... also there is a fwd ea82 wagon right next to it.I could probally get both for 80 bucks. Is there anything I could use off the EA82 other than the radiator?could the front suspension bolt on?

    Swampers

Those cars are way to clean to have swampers.Go and get those beasts muddy then come back and post pics.
  17. The suspension isnt the problem, its the axles
  18. I know the struts are the limiting factor on a legacy but I have a set of 26" tractor tires from my old subaru...I am wondering if those will fit..assuming a spare set of stock wheels
  19. I am thinking of buying a 1990 legacy L AWD.How well do you think it would do with the rear diff welded up?or would the AWD and welded diff not play well with each other... also can 26" tires fit without cutting the body?
  20. I am considering buying a 1990 subaru legacy L AWD.it has 150K and is a manual. How does the AWD engage?Ive heard of a duty switch for the autos. Is there such a thing for the manuals or do they not need it?so how is the power transfered front to rear?
  21. I put a listing in craigslist for a set of subaru wagon wheels with some tires mounted to those.an elderly gentleman responded to the tires.it seems while he was there he was also eying my justy.he offered $125 for it even with its blown motor.I was kinda taken offgaurd because I was going to fix it.But I endned up selling the tires and the justy.managed to get $150 in cash that I otherwise wouldnt have.although Im kinda missing the justy right now even though it had a blown engine....
  22. nope.justies up to 93 believe are 100% subaru.
  23. but then it isnt a subaru justy. its a samuri with a justy body kit.
  24. yea I suppose your right.I would miss the go cart like handling.Maybe I can find a brat or hatch...or even a legacy...
