  1. the saab site I go on said first gear might be 4.25-4.57 depending on the year..
  2. Yea carbs are simpler but I like it when my engine doesnt stall or die because of fuel starvation when on a hill.
  3. Anyone know about other methods of figuring gear ratios?all the specs I can find for saabs is in this format 13,94 rather than 3.07
  4. One day I was bored and was surfing the web.I cam across a photoshop of a lifted saab 900 with a brush guard and a roof rack.I thought it looked cool.Although lifting a FWD is really just kinda poserish. Then I got to thinking the first gear on a non turbo saab 900 is HELLACIOUSLY low.Its low enough that I can find the steepist hill in town put it in first and maybe be going 7 MPH by the time I get down to the bottom(pisses off people behind me).Front what I know of where the diff is it would be easy to to punch a shaft out to the back.If would be simpler that way but not very practical because it would ALWAYS be in 4wd.Then I thought "what if I incorported the DR method of putting it in 4wd".So theres my question, can anyone show me a diagram or explain in detail how power gets send to the rear wheels when you put in 4wd on a DR (or even single range 4x4 for that matter) I think it would be kinda cool to have a 4wd saab, would be very road warriorish.
  5. my wagon with tractor tires is rolling mazda 14" steelies painted black.
  6. chevy/import wheel spacing is 6X5.5" subaru is 4X5.5 or 4X140 if you prefer just ask for any chevy truck with 6 lugs or any 4wd import truck/suv
  7. if the brat was going fine in the deep stuff why did you stop?
  8. I was just wondering if it would blow HG if it was too cold.actually it becomes quite warm in the car if I have the heat on,even if the engine temp is cold.must just be because when I cleaned the radiator out it also cleaned the heater core out so its more effiecient at extracting heat.Or maybe its just warm but its ok because I am already wearing a coat and warm clothes from being in the snowy moutains.either way Im fine with it not being super warm.and as far as fuel economy goes,im lightyears away from what my friends are getting in there full size pickups when they go wheeling...so Im happy.

    "Fozzy Locker"

I wonder how long it would last offroad with stock EA81 power?

    "Fozzy Locker"

I was thinking about using it for a welded or LSD front end.

    "Fozzy Locker"

in my travels though the the internet I came upon a lincoln locker variant called the "Fozzy Locker".Rather than welding the spider gears to each other you fill up some valleys on the gears at 90* angles.this way it allows 1/4 of a turn before the diff locks up.that 1/4 of a turn would allow you to turn all but the tightest turns without locking up.You could run one on the rear diff and not have to pull axles.or it could a FRONT DIFF LSD.Has anyone tried that?If you were gentle on the go pedal it should last a long time. I did the math with a 29" tire.it gives about 2 ft of movement before locking.that may just be enough to where it is possible to steer. At least make it so it isnt as hard to steer. alternativly weld at 180* which would give you about 4 feet of movement before it locks up.better on the street, offroad it would still lock up just you would need more spinning. one downside is you have to take the spider gears out to make it a fozzy locker, and unless you marked exactly where they were, you would have to a professional install it.It still might be an option.it falls somewhere between a lincoln locker and a real locker in terms of movement.
  12. try putting some liquid dishsoap in the cooling system.run it through everything until the car is warm/hot thenhook the hose up and flush everything out.you know when its done because the water will come out clean....oh yea it makes bubbles so make sure all the bubbles are flushed out before you fill it with coolant.
  13. when I start and drive it at low speeds it warms right up and settles about 1/8 of the gauge below the 1/2 mark. And the gauge didnt go to stone cold as I said eariler it was reading about 1/8 of the gauge.

    Holy Cow!!!

truth be told I was backing down the hill and thought the gas the brake.punched the gas in reverse and went right into the snow bank/ditch at the side of the road.the snow bank was enough that it tilted the car just so that the left front tire was in a hole and so was the left rear.the right rear was barely touching the ground and the right front was on a patch of ice...
  15. my subaru offroad toy the temp drops to stone cold when going about 50 mph or more when driving around.outside was like 20*F.My radiator is good.in fact right now from the front of the car you can see 100% of of the radiator core so that might have something to do with it.Anyway is Overcooling bad for the engine?

    Holy Cow!!!

another testing run this time in waha with some real snow.the tires seemed to do ok,but I need to do some things before I hed out again 1.WELD UP THE DAMN REAR DIFF 2.find out why my brakes are almost useless-fix if cheap, might have something to do with the brake fluid light on... 3.Fix big exhaust leak off the left head.car is the 10th gutless wonder in the world both with tractor tires and normal 13" tires. 4.find my come along. 5. make some atv style ramps to help when/if it gets stuck(it got stuck when I drove with one side into a snow bank and the other side was on ice,and it got stuck when I accidentally backed into a big snow drift when backing down a REALLY steep road.brakes didnt do much so it went right into snow bank.wouldnt have been a stuck if the rear end was welded. 6.WELD THE DAMN REAR DIFF!!!! 7.install CB radio and possibly lights on roof, print off "temp tags" so outings arnt so nerve racking-(sorry officer I just bought the car... sorry no pics.although they would just be of the car stuck in a snow bank, and or me shoveling snow out from under it. oh yea I made a SWEET scotch brite air filter.maybe I will get pics of that!
  17. why does it look like the whole car is leaning?
  18. what about after the lift modify your radiator so it fits horiztal above the engine.in the space the spare tire sits..then you could trim alot off the front end.
  19. what wrong at 2:30?he drive over a bridge with a puddle.
  20. if this was a DD I would run a 195*F Tstat. However this is my EA81 Toy.I am trying to keep it from blowing a headgasket for as long as possible. So im fine with burning a touch more gas and not having a lon of heat as long as the headgaskets dont blow.Actually the heat mine makes is quite nice.even with several LARGE holes in which air can escape it gets toasty in there.-theres a couple holes in the body from rust and I have no shifter boot...For the most part it stays cold when Im driving it just it slowly warms up when I am stopped(need to wire in the radiator fan).Right now because the snow if it starts climbing I can throw snowballs at the radiator...and it actualy works!
  21. so is it bad to have a 180*F T stat?Thats what Im running in my EA81 toy.As far as Im concerned the longer the temp stays cold the better.

    Holy Cow!!!

the radiator can only be moved so much before it hits the pulleys on the front of the engine.right now I have the stock fan that sits on the right side of the radiator.the lower edge is about 1/4" from the block. In those pics the lower radiator support isnt put in so the radiator hangs vertically. With the lower support in place the bottom of the radiator is rreally close to the engine. As far as the fenders-they are gone.I could chop the frame back to the meet the lower support but then I would loose my tow hooks. As for it being done.I have two more things to do.I have to make a bumper and weld the back diff.after that everything else is not strictly needed. Things I want to do weld diff build front bumper Wire in radiator fan and window washer unnessisary mods make shift boot and shift knob 4 lights on the roof install CB radio thats bin sitting forever... tape over broken taillight so it doesnt show white(not really important seeing as I probally as going to tow it there.Or drive really carefully)

    Holy Cow!!!

EMO KID MOMENT today I got the lower radiator support/skidplate welded up.Its pretty solid but its welded to rust.. The emo kid moment-The welding cost more than I expected.so now I COULD go offroad but no money for gas,and the subaru is empty...crys.
