  1. whats the norm for a carbed 84 brat with a stick stock?
  2. I know that max torque on my saab engine is at 2500 RPM with a 6250RPM redline(electronic redline, cant go above that if I tried) although max hp occurs right at redline(theres more to go but bumps into redline)
  3. I asked the auto shop teacher at my high school if I could borrow a compression gauge to check if the headgasket blew on my motor. He said a compression gauge would do nothing if it blew a coolant/oil hole.So I'll take the intake off and see what I find...
  4. bringing this thread back from the dead:banana: my Saab B202 (1985CC) sounds far different than a Dodge neon (2.0L) with almost the same specs as far as bore and stroke go. My car is more of a rumble/subterrainean growl where as the dodge is weedwaker. my car from the factory has a 4-2-1 header (1&4 and 2&3 are connected) however 1 and 4's pipe is definatly longer than 2&3 so in that regard the unequal pipe length holds true,However my car running exhaust straight of the head(missing bolts) still sounds a lot better than a normal inline four(Id be rumbling down the street and people would expect to see a big block Camaro and instead they see my little old saab.So I think that contributing factors of an engines sound are :resonance in the block, head design, timing, exhaust pulses, air intake, etc. with enough time you could make a sube sound like a honda or my saab sound like a beefed up lawnmower if you were willing to change almost everything about your engine that made it special. But why? finally of the bigest contributing factors is NOT exhaust-Saabs(non turbo) runing equal length headers still have the rumble they are famous for, just as soobs will always have their note.Besides one of the things that sold me on my BRAT was the fact it sounded like a ATV which I thought was bad ar5s. wheww, got a bit long.
  5. I need to drop tranny to fix shifter slop becuase a drill bit broke off in PIN hole, need more force to power through. I'll borrow a compression gauge tomarrow.
  6. why cant the tranny come with the engine? BTW what is a good source of cheap subie parts(new, not JY) is the suby dealer expensive?
  7. I picked up 15X7 steel wheels with chrome plating with 4 3/4 backspacing should tuck under fenders nicey...so I will have a BRAT with a messed up tailgate and shiny crome wheels and "blowd" headgaskets...
  8. just like CV joints-if one fails the other one isn't far behind. How do I pull the engine and tranny?PCV system?New to soobs "I blewd a headgasket" checked the oil, its the same color as the froth in Aircleaner
  9. my Brat stated running poorly after a day wheeling,I assumed it was the cat because I stuffed it into a couple snow banks..so I took it to a muffler shop they didnt find anything other than grease underneath so they lowered it back onto the ground.opened the hood to check the plugs and took off the aircleaner box-nasty brown foamy S@#T spatter near the vent tube for the right head the mechcanic said and I quote "You musta blowd your headgasket" so anyway should I replace both HG's? or just the one? it looks like pulling the engine would be easiest to fix.Or can I undo all stuff above the heads and have enough room to fix? I dunno I have to drop my tranny to do the EA81 shift slop removal,I suppose I could find a hoist and pull engine and tranny together-less bolts to undo for tranny...DAMNIT!!!!
  10. How much cutting would be needed to fit 195/60/15 tires on my gen 2 BRAT? I know the tire is about 1" taller than stock but how much wider?Would I have a problem on 15X6 chevy wheels with 3 3/4" backspacing?Or am I just posting for the sake of posting? Can't wait till I can pick up the chevy/toyota rims from a junkyard in like 3 hours...then I need to fix my CAT Coverter and drop the tranny to fix my bungled up job of fixing the shfter slop(drill bit broke of in hole,NEED more grunt to get through than I can provide from underneath...) all that before I can go offroad:eek:
  11. ok, today I went up to Waha and played around. No Pics sorry.in the high elevations it was snow everywhere.I ended up getting stuck twice-once when I was tring to play where the atv's were playing(they left about the same time I got there)and another time when I thought I could turn around and there wasnt quite enough space(shifter is so sloppy I don't have Reverse) but I learned a few things: I need better traction stock street tires blow.second I need reverse.self recovery equipment too(thank god I took a shovel and some wood). As for the tires I got some snow tires for saab that a beffier than all hell (mini BFG AT) and has an added bonus they are about 1.5 inches bigger than stock:banana: it isnt a swamper but. The snow tires are 15" so how do I redrill toyota/chevy 6 lug steelies? thinking of filling unused bolt holes with weld, than painting the steel wheels white(look like original BRAT wheels) now for the problem.one of the stucks I was up to frame in snow. Now the Brat is really slow,it barley runs below 2.5K(tries to die).won't idle, etc. did I make the cat implode or something?
  12. yes,but you stick an axle back in when you want 4wd
  13. tring to do the ea81 shifter slop mod. But I can't get the shifter off so I am attempting to drill it out from underneath. How in the hell do I drill it? Its dulling some titanium bits that I bought after a much smaller bit(high speed steel or carbon steel) broke of in there. Over about an hour and a half my progress is measured in thousandths of an inch. So how do I drill it or how do I remove the shifter to hit it with a milling machine?
  14. would it be okay to weld the rear diff if the vehicle is to be used for some road use but lots of offroad?Or would I be better of with an LSD?
  15. can you remove the air suction valve with no ill effects? I dont like driving a CARBED four pot and you can't find engine because of maze of vacuum lines(exagerated) why would any one in their right mind want to get rid of backfiring? I cut the exhaust off after the first muffler and I intentially make it backfire/pop/rumble...
  16. screw it, im taking it to a shop for them do do the repair.
  17. im tring to remove the shifter slop after an hour of cussing and dremiling the pin so it would go out.it finally came out. However the shifter coupling will not come free.I know its loose because it wiggles just I cant get it to budge from the shft. so How in world does it come off? Should I get a screwdriver + hammer to force it off?
  18. how did you set up the toggles? Im thinking of running some aluminum diamond plate over the center council and having a couple of toggles there-3 way toggle for rad fan, lights, then maybe a covered toggle for start
  19. Anyone got one,How do they work? Can it be installed DIY style? Im thinking of getting one,but if I have to send my tranny its gonna be expensive.
  20. where is the spring and how do you defeat it?An where can I get the tumbler rebuilt? Can I buy one on ebay?
  21. the ignition on my 84 brat went south.I Can't even turn it... ok backtrack, I was out mudding and the key didn't return to ON from start so it fried my starter:mad: so I take the key out and now I can't even get the key to turn. How do I replace the ignition.I took of the cover but don't really have a clue as far as removal goes. please help. I just bought the BRAT not even 4 days ago.
