Neutral position switch is OPEN with manual tranmission when in neutral.Automatic switch is grounded when in park/Neutral.Do you have the At/MT identification wire grounded?B84-81 has to be grounded for the computer to think its a manual.If the AT/MT wire isn't correct for your transmission type for your car the fuel pump wont turn on. the neutral position switch is B84-82 All else fails hotwire the fuel pump to come on in run and start.
  2. does the EJ harness control your starter or does the cars harness control the starter?With EJ swaps it is fairly common to use the cars starter wiring,while the start wire on the ECU is used mainly to tell the computer that the engine is cranking.So is it possible that your spinning the engine over with the cars harness while the engine/ECM doesnt have the clutch switch to tell its safe? I seriously doubt that your ECU doesn't have a clutch switch wire,90 legacies have a clutch switch that may or may no be hooked up.OBD2 has more sensors not less.. try to find that wire and temporary ground it to something to see if it starts,if that doesn't work check and make sure your getting voltage to the right places on the engine when in run/start.
  3. Im confuzed I thought for slow speed offroad you wanted a low speed torque converter?High speed is good for doing high RPM drag launching.

Your still only limited by the weakest point in the chain.Beef something up and it moves the failures to something more expensive.The control arm might not bend but the body might, or...On the other hand it could add enough strength that it completely solves bending altogether.waiting to see how this plays out.

  7. If your still deadset on the swap it isnt really hard just time consuming. Swap your transmission for a 4wd transmission set the rear of the car on jackstands remove the rear suspension(4 bolts plus shocks,brake lines,etc) remove gas tank and install 4wd version unless lifting 3+ inches. Install 4wd suspension(4 bolts+ 4 for the diff mount+shocks+brake lines) install driveshaft. If you have all of the parts ready to go and your using impact tools it could easily be done in a day.My hatch in my sig started out as a 81 FWD DL.

    My hatch weighed 2500 lbs.Adding the T case,bigger tires,and the assorted steel added 250-300 lbs up from about 2250 lbs.Even though the T case and the bigger tires made it better it still felt abit heavy especially the front.It just seems like in the subaru world you could make something stronger and lighter by building a subframe formed to whatever car you want...I dunno I'm sure it will be cool when your done, but as you said it might not be what you want.
  9. I ran the rear shocks from a 90's ferd exploder and they worked good for 8" of lift. on the rear..

Look at some of the pics in scotts build thread of this car,specially page 3 and 4 to get an idea of kind of terrain he is dealing with.You can't go 12-15MPH over that stuff at least without serious breakage.A big truck with super soft and flexy suspension and big tires airs down possibly,a subaru with mostly stock suspension-not possible.

The problem with the nos is he needs it more or less continuously for trail riding. realistically his best option is a divorced transfer case so his ground speed can be the same or slower and his engine can be in a spot that makes power.Even idling along in 1st gear lo/lo his torque is doubled.

    Have you considered just building a buggy off the frame?use a subaru hood/grill/lights for the front.you will need a rollbar/cage because that frame is heavy and you dont want it crushing you.That or have your body more or less a shell,no glass,no doors,no dash other than oil pressure and coolant temp..

Some how I am getting the message that not many of you have dropped a transmission from a 78 brat before.There is a cross member where the radius arms go to that sits directly under the transmission.The only way the transmission is coming out the bottom is if the suspension cross member+radius mount cross member comes off. EA81/Ea82 transmissions are cake.
  15. you saw how low geared my car was in 1st lo/lo.1/2 the speed of your car but the same engine speed.
  16. Just modify the EA81 tops hats to go on the EA82 struts,takes 5 minutes with a dremel.

  18. you might need to work on your hands/brain interface thing.Similar to driving a manual, clutch in, engage brain,clutch out,easy dont stall it or you will back up traffic... my problem on test day my brain is like an old car with a bad carb.I stall it the first question then its like this through the test. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TK9kX-n6aBU

If you could figure out where the stock linkage is with no lift in relation to the body, IE X" horizontal from the transmission and Y" vertical from the transmission it wouldn't be hard to figure out how much to extend everything without all the guess work.The linkages act on pivots so if free to move they would trace an arc from their centerpoint. In the case of dropping the crossmember its as if the radius of that "arc" has been shortened.So the shifter needs to move farther to do the same amount of work.Granted that might be a bit more math than just welding spoob together but the shifter would behave just like stock. Maybe someone has a stock DR 5 speed car that they could measure where the shifter sits in relation to the transmission/body, then it would be simple to figure out how much to extend the linkage for ANY lift. Finding a stock subaru though might prove to be a problem.
