I'm thinking I should have waited a bit to come up there.

that is actually a "feature" it keeps the gasoline from freezing in the winter... The problem with true duals is it can make the engine abit "peaky" with no way to balance each side,so you loose a little bit of low end.If you add in a piece connecting the two sides then it tends to work better-IE X pipe or H pipe.

Best suspension setup for gravel/dirt roads for cheap
Uberoo replied to Maximilian's topic in Off Road
hey I liked rallying the piss out of my 81 monster hatch,Granted between the horrid alignment and mash up of old worn parts made it interesting at times...but the combination of no weight, short wheel base and ample power to the rear end was very fun.It was actually easier to keep the car sideways in a turn than it was to keep it straight. More to the point of the story I liked all of my EA series stuff for rallying around even lifted with normalish drivetrains (no T case), In my view they felt more stable than my legacy. The legacy was a twitchy son of a thing, get going 50-60 MPH on gravel and the rear end would start swaying and required constant attention. The legacy/imp stuff may be stronger but it also has more parts/links so it has more parts that can be worn out and cause weird handling. I guess it really depends on HOW fast you want to go on those gravel/dirt roads.50-60 is probally about the max with an EA series vehicle, 70+ with an EJ series vehicle with new suspension parts.. this coming from a guy who spent most of his life messing around on dirt roads. My personal best was 85 MPH with an 82 nissan 200SX(RWD), and 75 with a 94 Dodge ram 4x4 diesel pickup,And no those arn't speeds that I saw while sliding through a corner. However,my cruising speed on gravel tends to be about 50-65 depending on where I am going. -
2" suspension lift or proper 2" subframe drop?

First off route the tubing up higher in the inner fender,In the short time that has been there it has already gotten some road rash/rubbing from the tire.As for a better solution cut the snout of the airbox off and weld on a piece of tubing that will fit inside your tubing. Then hoseclamp + RTV your flex tube to the airbox.

Best setup for gravel or dirt- stock, whatever came under the car from the factory.Unless gravel roads means WFO in 3rd/4th/5th gear, then its WRX coilovers. unless you lift the car with stiffer springs the suspension will be the same stiffness as before you lifted it,possibly softer due the the bigger tires that help absorb bumps. EDIT as far as the travel goes the struts are good for about 6" of travel, about 7-8" at the tire, so your covered as far as travel goes, these arn't street cars with 1-2" inches of travel. -
Is the ducttape temporary mounting or something?

If your just after the 15" rims 6lug chevy, and Jap truck all fit with some work.Either 2 holes drilled in the rims or extra studs installed in the hubs..

I am wondering if it would be even possible to put a torque converter in front of a normal manual transmission, IE a DR 5 speed? At low speeds the torque converter creates torque multiplication. So an engine that makes 100 ft-lb at the flywheel could make 150 -200 at the transmission in an ideal world. That extra torque would be nice for getting big tires turning, offroad put it in 1st low and it should crawl up over obstacles without ever stalling the engine. in the 50's dodge/plymouth had something very similar before they made a true automatic but that used some propriety components. Apparently in baja racing some of the trucks have manual transmissions modified to use a torque converter rather than a clutch because the tq converter acts like a shock absorber so the engines arn't put under huge loads from the constant air tire and landings.Rumor has it to shift you let off the gas and then you can shift while moving. So in that case they are put in 1st then started then its just like a normal manual from that point minus the clutch..

Not so much. the AWD center section is not good for wheeling.Austin has a EJ DR, and it was ok until a tire or two came off the ground.

What are these wheels worth?
Uberoo replied to Brett!'s topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
the wheels arn't worth anything at all.You should give them to me to dispose of them properly.- 3 replies

having a spotter can sometimes help.

i never said i was building this to impress other people. Im not gonna go and paint in the "patina" look, and of course form follows function. So I could build a bumper that protects the front end,but I could have it braced to the strut towers, then maybe a side to side brace for that bumper that passes right through the fenders to bolt to the structure of the car..then paint that bumper with whatever paint I happen to have around without a particular paint scheme in mind.

So can Ea81 front suspension take a 1" suspension lift without CV's dieing too fast?Back before I transfer cased my wagon I ran Ea81 suspension with 2" lift and it ate axles like candy. An axle typically lasted 2 weeks to a month.

I was planning on running 27-29" tires with a EJ22 not sure about torque cams though because I normally use the entire RPM band.Sometimes its nice to creep along.

with that ford fuel pump so loud I couldn't hear a thing really.20 feet away it was loud..

hey speaking of video links anyone happen to have the one with the late 70's and early 80's subarus offroading? The one where most people still had a single range and a 4 speed DR was hawt stuff?
-
What is the best way to pull a 4 speed single range 4x4 transmission from a stock height 78 brat?Forgive my ignorance but I am used to subarus tall enough that the transmission can just come out from underneath.this 78 sits pretty low...
-
I should make something like this because the local machine shop treats subaru heads as "V6" heads so they want 45 a head or 75 if both are done. There used to a cheap machine shop in town but napa auto parts bought them out so now there is only one shop in town so they can charge bank for any and all engine machine work.

run the exhaust out the side,up through the hood would obstruct visibility too much. As for joining the pipes I have always heard that you pick up a bit more low end torque with them joined, separate it tends to be a bit more peaky.

I can't have the mounted machine gun but I like the grill treatment.
