My bad I was under normal automatics had the planetary gears,I suppose its not that far of a stretch for a CVT to have a planetary gear for reversing duties.Normal automatics use them like that that.

WHY?

I am thinking with the next incarnation of my offroader I should run a EJ22+5 speed AWD box running into a suzuki T case. With the high range reduction it is almost like having the subaru transmission in low which it more or less was anytime I was offroad or below 45 MPH.That way I don't need an adapter plate or flywheel work, and I get rid of an extra lever. With the high range reduction that limits my top speed to 77 MPH but the speed limit is 55-60 on the roads around here. I will have to weld up the center clutch and find a suzuki box but overall it seems simpler... On the other hand I loose a bit of low range. stock subaru low range is 3.545x1.59X3.9=21.98 suzuki low range is 3.545x2.23x4.11=32.49 nissan+subaru low range is 3.545x1.59x2x4.11=46.33 suzuki low range with no other gearing gets me slightly lower than stock sized tires with 31" tires If I run the same setup as what I running before with the nissan+subaru its about 2.1x slower with 31" than it was with stock tires. In low gear at idle: stock with 23" tires= 2.35 MPH stock with 27" tires = 2.74 MPH stock with 31" tires= 3.14 MPH(MMM pie) suzuki/31" tires/4.11 gears = 2.12 MPH Nissan+subaru/31" tires/4.11 gears =1.48 MPH is less hassle worth less crawling?

but with a divorced transfercase its exactly like a toyota or any other 4x4 truck.
-
I had a feeling but damn.I was hoping to run a 4.11 subaru legacy transmission to get a slight reduction with an ej22 in front of a divorced transfer case.
-
I didn't know where else to put this some I am putting it here. Does the transmission final drive ratio affect the output speed of the rear driveshaft?IE would a 4.11 transmission have more torque at the rear output than say a 3.90?

put the nos kit on the Ea71. When it blows up put an EA81 in.I want to see what a bottle fed EA71 is like.

I wheeled my hatch for a year and a half over here and got no body damage in that time because over here we have mud with a tree some 50 ft away.Of course I would wheel it like my own and take care of it to the best of ability.Even when I went up to EC I only got a tiny dent on upper 311,but that wasn't enough for the gods that hate me apparently... mechanical damage falls under the category of stuff I would fix..

I would say 1000 lbs is doable ,but you will have to build your own "frame",you can't build one off an existing car though. A EA81 or EA82 vehicle should be able to provide everything you need.I would choose a EA81 because its more reliable.Measure everything relating to where the front and rear suspension mount.put the engine+crossmember+suspension assembly where you want it in the front and put the rear suspension where you want it in the rear.I would aim for a wheelbase 80-93".More or less put the rear tires right behind the front seats and have the fuel tank centered over the rear axle. Then build some sorta frame to connect everything and don't forget a roll bar/cage.Use aluminum floorboards, and use some plastic garden edging to cover the tires just so they wont pelt you with stuff, the rear 1/2 of the front tires and the front half of the rear tires.. that should keep you right around 1000LBs,run 27-29" tires because the bigger tires add weight. I just scraped a hatch with no engine, rear suspension, or fuel tank it weighed 1600lbs.I also had a bunch of stuff inside the car like the steel bits from an EJ22,it also had all the glass.

So in six months I would be shipping out to basic training but not having a wheeler is killing me.I have a 78 brat that needs some rust repair done that I could fix and put a small lift in it with some smallish tires and go but it wouldn't be very much fun with only a EA71 and single range 4x4.I am wondering if anyone would be willing to loan a wheelable subaru in the time being.I would fix anything that happens to it during the 6 months then bring it back to you.It doesn't even have to be really built, even a 2" lift and some halfway decent tires would be enough to have fun in.like I said my other option is to weld in new rocker panels and floor boards and fabricate a mild lift for the 78 brat and put EA81 rear suspension under it.Normally I would go with a 235/75/15 because they are plentiful but I don't know if a EA71 with no low range could motivate those tires enough.I know 235/75/15's on my 2" lifted EA81 wagon made it gutless..Ive looked around for a 215/75/15 and they are either not around or mega bucks.. I know its kinda an odd request, but I dont really have time to build the brat to something that could outwheel my hatch(RIP).

How much would that run for just the rear blocks to swap in a EA81 torsion bar?
-
With that in mind why run the leaf springs at all and instead set up a 3 link?Just use the struts you have already to suspend it.
-
you would only need one cam,if I understand correctly you just talk to delta cams http://deltacam.com/

here is some questions for you: What is your experience dealing with engine swaps, wiring harnesses and the like? You asking this so I assume you have never done this sort of stuff before or lack the skills to do it.Just swapping in a non turbo phase one EJ22 has its share of problems and it will documented. Adding a turbo, its oil and coolant lines, and all other related parts is a nightmare for someone asking how to do this stuff. Not to mention the more complicated wiring and engine management. A better option might be be to swap in a normal EJ22 and see how you fair. I personally have done several swaps to where I don't think much of installing a EJ22 into something.Heck I am so comfortable with the swap that I am even going to put that engine into an 83 mazda RX7. So if I wanted to do that swap it wouldn't start with "how do I this", it would start with pics of the donor car, then end with either the engine running or not then I would ask questions. Asking question at the very beginning of a very large and very expensive project shows you lack either the skills or understanding to see it through. Ive heard of a few EJ20g and EJ257 swaps and all were done by people very knowledgeable in subarus. Starting right off the bat with a EJ20g or EJ257 swap is asking for trouble.A CEL on a non turbo engine isn't normally a bad thing, on a turbo it usually means $$$$$ because when things go wrong with turbos they go wrong in a big way. a misfire on a non turbo means maybe a bit rough running,a misfire on a turbo engine may end up with a hole in a piston.

I know lift kits for EA71 vehicles are a bit "interesting" because of the rear suspension. After looking at the rear of my 78 brat it doesn't look as though bigger tires can easily be fitted without the tires rubbing on the suspension. So I was wondering if there is a lift kit that swaps in EA81 rear suspension?I can certainly build one and incorporate it with a 4" lift, but for the time being it might just be easier to find a lift kit that does that...So are there any lift kits that swap in EA81 suspension?BOSS,SJR,ETC?

What fuel pump do you have?It sounds like at the five minute mark your not getting fuel.So either there isn't voltage to the pump or the pump isn't rated for a high enough head pressure. You can check if thats your issue by clamping your return line and see if it helps.if it does your fuel pump may be dieing.

Need help with 1980 subaru brat ej22 swap
Uberoo replied to skinny664521903's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
If you have a "fat case" EA71 (side mounted starter) or an EA81 it will work. However the 4 speed transmission really isn't that great and is prone to breakage even at stock power.Almost doubling the power is asking for trouble. The latter 5 speed is almost a direct swap(still need the adapter plate) but it will hold the power nicely. If your lifting the brat and want bigger tires for offroad go with a dual range(hi/lo) 5 speed transmission found in 85-88 EA82 series cars(timing belt engine). otherwise get a engine and AWD transmission from a parts car in manual or (shudder) auto. If you go with the AWD transmission you wont need the adapter plate but wont have low range or mechanically linked 4x4. -
select monitor is just a data collection similar to OBD, just on a dealer only langauge.

If its all the same to you I would go with EJ stuff in an offroader for one reason-electron distributorless ignition. With a SPFI EA81 the distributor is right at the front of the engine,I can't count the number of times I splashed it offroad and had to be towed out of a mud hole.By contrast the EJ stuff uses magnetic sensors that will keep the engine running even with them under water.Mine did numerous times...

Clearly you weren't in Evans Creek.Multiple jeeps still had stock all seasons in the damp PNW...

So I pickup up the 78 brat today, it is still mostly there,at least enough for what I need so heres how it looks now. I paid $154.55 for it.It has an engine under the hood but the heads are off and the pistons look froze in there bores. It came with another engine in the bed aswell. No idea on its condition either, but it was covered by the topper that was on the bed.We put the topper in the back of my truck because it wasn't held on with anything... The driver side rocker panel is smashed, the fenders are rotting out, and the driver side door doesn't open so there is some work to do. I'm going to clean it up and change out the tires to ones that hold air so I can move it. I gotta ask, after seeing exactly how narrow it is if I swap EA82 suspension under it how far will the tires stick out of the body?
-
Is there a vid of someone at EC yelling "PASSENGER" at somebody else?
-
I have considered them but when it came time to get the T case at pull and save they didn't have any samurais. Its more of question of finding one rather than using one.The samurai case is smaller so it wouldn't kill ground clearance as much as the nissan box-even with mine clocked sideways and tucked up into the body.
-
So basically a worse performing version of your buggy right? In that case why even start with a subaru in the first place? gross, sounds like a lot of GM parts.I wasn't happy that I had a fuel pump and windshield washer reservoir/pump from a ford. Besides a 2 speed would suck HARD for something that is driven on the street.Even with the EJ22 and 5 speed DR and nissan T case I used all 10 gears in the subaru box.Ok more like 8 but whatever. 1-5 lo up to 45mph then 1-3 or 4 high after that depending on the road. Not to mention the high/lo in the T case.Even if I lost my mind and wanted a bunch of GM parts on a subaru wheeler I wouldn't run an automatic anyway.

thats just a regular 4EAT not the CVT. A CVT doesn't have the tradional sun/planet gears a normal automatic has.
