I drove over a curb once at the mall, does that count? I consider this to be offroad:

pretty much all of the pics of my car from EC are going slow, with a T case and the 4.11 gears it crawls.Once I learned not to touch the clutch it walked right up everything,by then though the clutch was in bad shape, but it was in bad shape before.before EC I found that my clutch didn't like subaru low 2nd gear,4x4 high on the nissan box at WOT in mud..

I'm just kinda curious here, if money was no object how many of you would still wheel subarus? Now when I say no object I don't mean buy one of those 150K tube buggies,I mean instead of the $100-5000 we spend on our subarus, spend 10-30K on something. I used to always make the excuse that a subaru was very cheap, cheap to buy, cheap to build, cheap to fuel, and cheap to fix.Coming from not alot of money that was perfect for me.Then I started figuring out something, while subarus are cheap, they are also capable. After I put a t case in my hatch I found that it would go where ever I pointed it, and often with less trouble than a bigger vehicle. My ex-hatch had a EJ22,5 speed DR, nissan t case,4.11 gears, and 31" (mismatched) tires.Other than that I was mostly satisfied. It mostly went where it was pointed unless the crap tires that I found for cheap/free couldn't propel it enough, that and good old driver error .For the most part once it got to that stage I never found myself wanting more than just a few tweaks.Once it was modified like that not once did I ever think it needed more power, or lower gears, or bigger tires, etc.Sure it needed "better" tires, but bigger no.For a grand total of $1150 I built a nice and functional vehicle that had no problems going where the big trucks went. So my question is this: if you had 20K to buy and build a vehicle would you build a subaru and keep the rest for things like gas, parts, more vehicles, etc or would you start with something else and modify that-atoyot,heep,suzuki,etc...
  5. a 3000lb winch wont work in a single line pull with a 4000 lb vehicle stuck in something. You will stall the motor and burn out the contacts, wiring, and what ever else.the general rule of thumb is to multiply 1.5-2X vehicle weight. So a winch for a 4k vehicle would be 4x1.5-4x2=6-8K lb winch. you could get 6K lbs out of a 3K winch using snatch blocks, but you half your line speed and half your available winch line.A typical 3K winch has about 50 ft of line, however the last 5 ft at least needs to stay on a roll.So your at 45 ft, that leaves you 22.5 ft to find something to anchor to-about as long as a full size truck, when your stuck that isn't much.Where I wheel if you get pulled out by someone even with a 20 ft chain at least there rear tires will be in the mud,The nearest tree might be 50 ft away...
  6. Once I find another car I need to build some half doors again.I had some on my old wagon and loved them.Just about every pic of me and the hatch,I was leaning out the window to look at the terrain.
  7. On my hatch I relocated the battery to the trunk to: A remove some weight from the front end, and B: easily power the rear mounted winch. I ran a single 1 gauge welding wire lead from the battery to the starter motor.A starter motor can draw roughly 100-600 amps for a short amount of time.I ran a 125A breaker and it would normally never pop unless the battery was weak. However a winch is trying to move the weight of the car+ whatever the car is stuck in,rather than just spin the engine like the starter. So you are gonna need a DAMN big cable to power the winch and travel the length of the car. depending on where you get stuck the level of force to get out changes. I have been stuck in a mud hole and a fat guy on a big quad was all that was needed to pull me out,I have also been stuck in cement like mud up to the top of the tires and it took 2 full size trucks chained together to pull me out.
  8. right now I am toying with the idea of tubing the front, just enough to hang sheetmetal and mount suspension.I already have to re-make the 8" lift and subframe for the T-Case.While I know the car will never look right its an offroader, with its constantly out of alignment worn suspension the car never drove right on the road as it was.Building it like that I should be able do away with the front lift blocks and just relocate the mounting points for the suspension 8" down. I can get that front cut for $50 and it has mostly straight body panels and its "frame" isn't destroyed so I can take measurements off it.The way i figure if I get a new EA82 front suspension and put it in place under the front and position it so its within 1/16" of an inch of square with the back tires it should be good enough for the limited time its on the street-filling it with gas or driving it to the local wheeling spot,17 miles away.
  9. the question is WHY would you want to?The fuel injection setup on that engine is better in almost every single way compared to carb. Although carbed EJ's do sound better.Still loosing MPG,power, and reliability for better sound is hard to justify.
  10. I was towing my car home on a trailer coming from the big mid summer offroad meet in evans creek.I stopped at the turn off for Wa261 and tightened everything. Then drove home,Wa261 is a curving bumpy road with hills thrown in for good measure. My trailer isn't exactly rigid,in fact its very flexible.I'm guessing that over the course of the 10 miles of wa261 before it fell off the trailer the straps holding the car down came loose.I got down to the bottom of a hill and I felt a jerk and I looked in the rear view mirror just in time to see my beloved hatch leaving the truck and trailer.I kept going about an 1/8 of a mile then turned around to find it at the bottom of a shallow ditch with it crashed into a tree about as wide as the car.It hit that tree at ~50 mph.The ground leading up to it was a little rough and they might have slowed down a stock car but with the bigger tires it just rolled over all the bumps without really slowing down. So right now my car is on top of my trailer and I am just trying to figure out what to do with it.Before I had even left for EC I was planning on making the trailer stronger when I got back.Once the trailer is freed up I will do that as well as weld some strong chain to the front and back of the trailer so if something does happen and the straps come loose the car can't move more than a foot because of the emergency chain holding it.
  11. That gap above the window is big enough to put my hand through all the way to my wrist.
  12. The roof is kinked at the B pillar on the passenger side of the hatch.I looked at it today and after I saw what the floor was supposed to look like I figured out how extensive the damage is.The passenger side foot well is pushed back to where its only a couple inches in front of the factory shifter hole in the floor. the hatch is pretty much destroyed so that there really isn't a good reference point forward of the B pillar. I'm not entirely sure how it happened but the impact even went through the 2x3x.1875 steel that was tieing all the blocks together and crushed the front-most rear lift block(leading edge of the rear suspension lift block). If I could find a hatch shell to start again that would be great, because the hatch wheeled so much better than the EA81 wagon I first t cased.Shorter, less rear over hang,lighter,etc..
  13. So my 81 hatch got destroyed. However I found someone locally with a front clip of an 82-84 brat. The guy that has it is only interested in the engine/transmission so I would have to pull the engine and transmission then I could get it.Once I clear out space in the garage I could roll both halves in and start the surgery.I am just wondering what is the best way to weld and reconnect the sheetmetal where its layered? Also roughly how much would a front cut with no engine/transmission weigh once I removed just about everything that unbolts? The front clip was cut just after the T tops if it matters.
  14. it was more or less an offroad only rig.The problem is that it destroyed the heater core and in the process pushed the passenger side of the dash about 2" from the windshield, not to mention that almost every seam on the car at least on the bottom looks like it bent,The whole passenger compartment is bent. I like wheeling in the winter so I am looking to find a shell to start again.Hatch or brat..
  15. if you don't have legacys there the than it is a liberty.
  16. I totaled my car.I was trailering it without an engine and it worked itself loose and fell off the trailer at 50 MPH.Hit a tree about 6 feet wide just a couple inches off center. http://s109.photobucket.com/user/Uberoo/library/Subaru%20stuff/crash?sort=3&page=1
  17. I think this shell is done.It kinked the roof at the passenger side B pillar and created a gap above the window big enough to fit my hand through. It did crack the windshield.the frame rail/strut tower on the passenger side is destroyed. It even destroyed the 1/4" steel lift block.the driver side strut tower might be still intact, but in front of the strut tower is caved in. I don't know how I could straighten out the cab/passenger compartment to unjam the doors or even fix the kink in the roof.I am going to run some errands today and after I get done I will remove the hood, bumper, and fenders and see what I can do to pull out the driver's side to the point I can open the door and get all my stuff out.
  18. I blew a stub axle and kept having to adjust my clutch,Butters broke the carrier bearing,an EA82 blew a stub axle, and the other EA81 hatch blew a front axle on to road to EC.For the life of me I can't remember their names, but they will probably be along shortly.
  19. That was also without an engine. With an engine everything would have been pushed back even further. the right front tire got pushed back atleast 6 inches, and the tire is entirely out of the body work.I'm debating on cutting out all the sheetmetal and welding in some tubes just to hang fenders off and stuff. If I could even open any of the doors.
  20. Heres my EC pictures.I had some action shots but the camera's settings were off so they all came out blurry. http://s109.photobucket.com/user/Uberoo/library/?view=recent&page=1 and here is what my car looks like now. http://s109.photobucket.com/user/Uberoo/library/Subaru%20stuff/crash?sort=3&page=1 the impact was just off center on the passenger side, but both doors were jammed shut. The lift "subframe" was pretty much destroyed up until the rear most blocks. the 2x3X.125 box channel that I welded in for the lower radiator support crushed in and hit the transmission with not only enough force to break the bellhousing but to shift the transmission so much that the drive shaft was ripped out.The front suspension is all intertwined so it will take a cutting torch to get the front diff/axles out. If the doors wern't jammed shut I might be tempted to make a tube front and just hang some body panels off the tube, but even the passenger compartment got shorter by 1-2",the passenger side has a 1" gap above the door window.. Anybody have a hatch sheel thats reasonably straight?
  21. I made it home, but my car didn't.was driving on WA261 toward pomeroy.got to the bottom of a hill and felt a jerk and I looked back only to see my subaru leaving me.It went off the back of the trailer and kept going until it found a tree about as wide as the car itself and centerpunched it at ~50 mph.just looking at the car it is 10000% totaled. The front is all smashed up,the transmission is broken, the front diff got pushed rearward about 2-3".The T case may or may not be broken, both doors are jammed shut, the windshield is cracked, and the roof is bent, even the spare tire mount ripped out of the body. I don't know what happened because when I turned onto WA261 I stopped and tightened everything up.I went most of the way then it came undone due to washingtons bumpy roads and turns. In the morning I will go back and pick it up.Gutted. If there is a silver lining to this I guess it would be that it hit a tree rather than a house or even an on coming car.I don't know how I could go on living if it had come loose and killed somebody.
  22. Im tempted to bring my bike but I really dont see when I could ride it or where to leave so it where it would be safe.
