  1. Get it,but when you get parts for it call it an 83 or 84 hatchback.Otherwise parts people will try to look up parts for an EA82...
  2. just have the air filter sticking out of the hood.It wont be much. When I put a weber on my brat along time a go the tall air filter stuck out of the top of the hood about 1/2-1/4".It it bothers you put a water jacket on the filter. thats just me, I like it when the top of the airfilter sits about an inch above the hood. the water that will get in wont hurt an ea81,unless your offroading it and a bow wave comes up over the hood and submerges it.
  3. I dont have a ea82 but this is what I was able to figure out
  4. Jeff I want to go wheeling with ya but a 12 hour round trip for a day a wheelings is alot, thats why I am interested in the next time you go wheeling for a full weekend.
  5. I was about to pull my gas tank on my 81 DL hatch when I noticed three vacuum lines from the filler neck area on the gas tank. They go upwards into box on the passenger side rear strut tower.I am just wondering what that thingie is and if its needed anymore.FYI the gas tank vent line in the engine bay is plugged off and I have a vented gas tank cap.
  6. The people I go wheeling with have enough sense not to jerk with a chain,But even with a snatch strap it still has to be hooked to something solid.
  7. I was initially going to put a EJ22 into my 83 Mazda RX7,but after a recent trip to pull and save I found a 90 lexus LS400 with a little bit of front end damage. The wheels in my head started turning and the idea of a 265HP 390 lb v8(40 lbs heavier than the stock 12A) started to sound pretty good.Problem is I don't know anything about those atoyoT engines,so I don't know all of the things I would need to grab from the car.
  8. I try not to jerk, but when you ask others not to jerk you out they look at you like your from mars.

    Front end grip?

Maybe, maybe not.My setup is working just fine right now.I did have to mix and match parts to get rear axles that work,but...it works now.
  10. that was the bumper mount points. If you look at the passenger side pic you can see the bumper shock tweaked.

    Front end grip?

only the sought-after gsl has a limited slip.I wasn't aware of any lockers available for the first gen RX7. 2nd or 3rd gen RX7 stuff wont work without swapping in their stuff. I have an 83 waiting for EJ22 heart transplant.
  12. So the rear recovery points on my 81 hatch more or less ripped out of the body. here is the driver side rear: Not to bad other than the loop has long been ripped out. here is the passenger side rear: As you can see it is completely destroyed. I cut out the driver's side section already and was shocked to find that the "recovery" points were nothing more than a single layer of thin sheetmetal in a box shape. The cargo floor itself isnt much better.I will cut out the passenger side after I drop the fuel tank, because when I was cutting the driver's side the underbody rust proofing caught on fire and I really dont want that sorta fire anywhere near the gas tank. Anyway have you guys ever reinforced that area?I was thinking 1/8" box channel welded to the floor above with some 1/8" angle iron welded to the sides to give it more surface area.I'm still a bit leary because all the the strength comes from the strength of a thin piece of steel in tension(the floor itself. If I did it like that it probably would be ok to get pulled out but dont do any pulling of my own, unless the vehicle in question is smaller than my car.
  13. ok is there a EA82 fuel tank bigger than 15.9 Gallons?

    Front end grip?

Why the rx7 rear end anyway? If it is a 3.90 rear end you wouldn't want that for bigger tires.I'm running 4.11 front and rear(after a T-case you are no longer limited to the 3.90 ratio in the transmission)
  15. like I said start at the front. put a jack/jack stand/block under the engine/suspension cross member undo all bolts holding cross member to car including steering shaft, undo upper strut mount from body, remove rubber mounts for exhaust.Raise body up off cross member struts enough to install lift. Then get all the bolts/nuts started before tightening any of them down. install steering extension loosely. Once all the blocks are in correctly, tighten them as well as the steering extension. After all that the rear is cake. NOTE: your camber will be FUBAR until you have a chance to drive the car around the block and get the suspension to settle.
  16. Does the kit have all the bolts and hardware? If not get ahold of bill and find out everything you will need and get that all in advance, because there is nothing worse than needing a bolt, nut or washer when your car is torn down. After you have everything you need set everything in front of you and visualize where everything needs to go.Then start with the front end because it will take the longest. After that the rear is cake. Impact wrenches are awesome for getting everything loose. How big is the lift anyway?
  17. Have any of you ever ran a rear mounted winch?Normally I don't have much use for winch because I rarely go wheeling by myself,so if I get stuck I just get pulled out by another rig. However, there have been times that another vehicle wouldn't be able to get to me,for instance when tree wheeling with a much larger vehicle. In the tight trees the subaru is able to dart between the trees and turn around with ease, while a large vehicle like a full size bronco for instance would have to make multiple point turns to get around the same turns if it would even fit.So a winch might be a good thing to have just for those situations that another vehicle can't get to me. My car is already front heavy after the T-case conversion with the EJ22 so putting a winch up front wouldn't really help that much,So I was thinking because I have to reinforce the rear "frame" as well as build a new rear bumper that maybe I should put a small winch in the rear as well.Thoughts?

    Front end grip?

NEGATIVE.It is my belief that a subaru only does well offroad because it weighs next to nothing and has IFS which allows the tires to drop into ruts made by bigger vehicles without getting hung up..Besides even with 31's ground clearance under the diff on a solid axle would be sucky.
  19. I am wondering if EA82 fuel tanks are bigger than their EA81 counterparts?EA81 tanks are as follows: 4WD Hatch 11.9 Gallons FWD Hatch 13.2 Gallons 4WD wagon 14.5 Gallons FWD Wagon 15.9 Gallons On my 81 hatch I have to re-work all of the rear "frame" because due to bad luck and chance most of it has been ripped away while out offroading. So because I have to modify that area anyways it wouldn't be too hard to mount in a larger fuel tank.My 81 hatch started as a FWD,but the EJ22 sucks the fuel down pretty good at full throttle..
  20. When is the next time you will be wheeling for an entire weekend OneEye?
  21. They are never fixed because that would violate the beater law."As soon as a problem is fixed two more must pop up"
  22. I was feeling the urge to go and buy a subaru for a dd.So I went on craigslist and looked for "subaru" under $1000.I found this 88 Subaru DL wagon for $600.So I went out to look at because I had this vain hope that "it might not need alot of work to be reliable".So I get there and just from a quick glance of the car I found out it has 295XXX miles, has alot of rust, and the tires are old and dry rotted. So I do the usual checks-check for rust under the car, bounce the corners, etc and I found one of the most oily engine bays I have ever seen on a subaru-clear valve cover gasket leaks, not a problem. Then I notice all the coolant under the timing covers-looks like failing water pump. The oil dripping from the timing cover as well told me leaking cam towers. So I told this to the owner and he merely said the car has been well used and was used as a farm vehicle for the last two years. The owner just added coolant and oil as necessary Remember how I said I bounced the corners? The front struts are BLOWN.Press down on the front corners and the car would bounce twice. in my mind im thinking, the EA82 is a boat anchor so I'll just swap in a EJ22,the rust is only really bad on the fenders so I will just knock those out to clear bigger tires, then it hit me.THIS CAR WOULD BE A DAILY DRIVER so non of that stuff would apply.Right now I'm in the market for a car precisely because I don't have time to work on project vehicles. So why is it that I find myself gravitated toward the project cars?
  23. I would say 50 MPH or better,May not bend the metal but might wear out/jam the hinge.Besides what happens if you find a low hanging tree branch with it?
