I spent alot of time today under the front of my EA81 wheeler toy while I was putting in a 5 speed.I couldn't help but notice how short and stubby the lower control arms are.I also noticed that when I would jack the car up from the front that there wasn't alot of down travel in the suspension. So Im just wondering exactly what part of the front suspension is binding up? Note: please don't treat this as one of my famous "what if posts". Im just kinda looking the suspension travel like this: if the axles can take "X" travel, the struts have "X-y" travel, etc why not make everything travel at least as much as the axles can take. I know that we are never going to get massive travel out of the subaru stuff, but if we can tweak it to get just a little bit more out of it,it will help. as for whats binding up the suspension is it the strut, the axle, the radius rod, lower control arm, etc..

Put transmission in by your loansome...
Uberoo replied to Uberoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I was able to get the transmission on the floor jack and slowly work my way up to the engine..couple tweaks here and there and I got it started on the locating studs. Then was able to jack the rear of the transmission a bit. Then I used the long bots off the top to draw the engine/transmission together.. so much simpler to talk about it with out the couple hours of manhandling/wresting the transmission to go in.. Now I just have a few small stuff to take care of-clutch cable, speedo cable, and driveshaft/carrier bearing..and fluid. Which brings me to the next part,How much of what kind of oil does a 5 speed DR take. -
What is the best way to put a transmission by yourself?I was thinking using a floor jack to lift the transmission then move it around to get everything to line up.Or is there an easier way other than having an assistant?

I just made the top holes smaller and drilled and tapped them. -
Throw out bearing retaining clips
Uberoo replied to Uberoo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
we have a winner!thats sounds nice and cheesy enough for me to do it.. -
Im in the the process of putting a 5 speed DR transmission into my 83 wagon.I keep getting hung up in a few places.Like the parts stores not being able to find a correct throw out bearing. So I took the old throwout bearing off to compare with what they had...In the process I lost one of the little retaining clips for the bearing.Any idea where I might find another? Not sure if the parts stores would have anything because they can't seem to even order the correct part.. transmission came out of an 85 GL EA82 car...

If I may make a suggestion: Lower the T case an inch or so.The input drive shaft looks to be at a bit to steep of an angle for reliable power delivery. From what ive heard a 5-10* angle on the drive shaft is about all thats practical before it starts binding up.10* of free standing angle is a bit extreme for U joints. It may work but it would probally wear out really fast. On the other hand, the U joint is just spinning with no up or down travel so it might work...Again I don't know how long U joints will last.

watch out for a lot of oil on the clutch.Depending on how long the car sat the front/rear main seals could be leaking.

jeff, have you ever considered calling the offroad group "body damage INC" every rig had some body damage(not saying thats a bad thing) also who was driving the silver EA81 wagon? It looked neat.

I don't think the problem with group B rally cars was there power.I think it was more due to FOCKING STUPID spectators.Inches away from the road,in some cases in the middle of the damn road where rally cars are going 100 plus.I imagine with proper crowd control group B wouldn't have gotten such a bad rep.

great idea but where where are you going to find WIDE 13" tires?

provide the motorcycle full face helmet and I would totally drive it on the street..

88 Wagon, title, Wa state... totaled question...
Uberoo replied to Indrid cold's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Id buy it back just to make a wheeler rig.Besides that roofrack and those lights have to be worth something. -
How much does it cost for us to make our subarus so they can go where all the other guys go? For a subaru to do decent offroad it needs bigger, more argressive tires. And a welded rear diff. lets look at costs: jeep built to same level jeep=5000-10000 liftkit= 1000-2000 Tires= 800-1500 so then at the minimum 5000+1000+800= 6800 Subaru Subaru=0-3000 liftkit= 600 tires =0-600 so then 1500+600+300=2400 difference 6800-2400=4400 So while a subaru may be lacking in ground clearance or whatever stock it doesn't take much to get them to perform where 75% of all other 4x4's are built for-general 4x4. besides a built subaru can be bought for less than the 4wd OPTION on some vehicles. That tells me a subaru is a better wheeler out of the box because you don't have to spend much to get them to function offroad. So what if it wont be a mud dragger or rockcrawler, for the amount you save by starting with a subaru you very well could turn it into a mud dragger or rockcrawler,etc... Remember the average lift kit for you average 4x4 ends up killing flex in order to fit bigger tires. Not talking 4links or what not.

if there any good I might be interested. If they have titles,I wouldn't mind a 4x4 hatch...

what about doing all that to a 2.2? -
EA82, right 2 cyl's come and go?

check your spark plug wires. They may be arcing out on that side with each other or the block itself. It helps to look at the engine while its dark and look and see if its arcing somewhere... -
if you drive an AWD car like it is an AWD car you will go into a ditch or worse.AWD doesn't to piss for braking, and it barely does anything for cornering.AWD is only useful for acceleration. The problem with AWD is that it doesn't slip until your Fecked, then its to late. Its not uncommon around here to see people driving way to fast for the conditions in AWD then winding up in a ditch when they need to turn. However,I believe that a 2wd(fwd or RWD) is better for in the snow because the drive wheels will start slipping long before you will get going fast enough to slide through a telephone pole or something. So because of that you know its slippery out there and slow down..
-
I don't know if this will help you but I just picked up a spfi intake horn. That will connect directly to my carb and it will be the beginning of a snorkel.. so if you have a carb theres how to get started. If you have spfi, its just a matter of relocating the filter to someplace more suitable..
-
theres a whole lot to be said about snow just from them temperature. When it snows Im always passing everybody when its cold but get the temp with in 5* of 32 and I slow right down.Really funny when some dufus sees me driving fast in some snow then slowing down for different kind of snow.So they pass me and wind up in a ditch... its thees morons that are to blame for WA salting the roads..

damn 3eye, tell me How you really feel.

It just took so long because of all sorts of issues like the steering, the engine not separating from the transmission,etc..
