how much and what sort of fluid does an DR 4 speed take?
-
Holy god those are massive control arms.

What is the best way to secure the engine?Would A rachet strap or similar work? I should have enough room to get the transmission out.Car is sitting on 235's with 2" suspension lift...
-
Is it easier to drop the transmission out the bottom of the car with the engine still there and then try get a transmission to mate up to the engine from underneath?Or is it easier to pull the transmission, then the motor and put the new transmission where its supposed to go, then install the motor? Also does anyone have a link to a write up for a 5 speed DR swap handy for future reference? Car is an 84 GL

I imagine it wouldnt be too hard to make some using the traxs of an old snowmobile?
-
I plain to take apart the busted one to maybe get a feel for the transmissions. Then maybe take apart another one to shim the diff with grinder disks for a redneck limited slip.
-
your lucky both of my axles are siezed solid to the splines...Ive even tried driving around with the rollpins out...
-
I dont think its supposed to do that

ended up being a 3 week old schucks axle binding up.. -
so then its not a bear to turn without ps?Great than..

if your driving is mostly street then find a LSD and fit it into the 3.9 houseing. if your driving is a decent amont offroad- weld it and dont look back..
-
Anyone have a technical drawing of a 4 or 5 speed?i will be taking apart the busted one,but it might be nice to be able to take one apart and put it back together with some slight changes...
-
Ok then.I will put a 5 speed in when I go to put an ej in...(just takes money, and I have to find a parts car...
-
I am thinking about putting a ej22 in my EA81.However the EA81 doesnt have power steering. Is power steering strickly needed?
-
I ran some 6X14 R1 tractor tires last year. They did awesome in the mud, but in the snow they were too argressive/too narrow. They dug right in and I was getting high centered everywhere. Now I am running 235/75/15 mud tires so I will see how those work..But those atv tires look pretty wide. You may want to consider running tubes in them. With the weight of a car on them turning in the mud they like to roll off the bead...
-
How come there are never any vids of both lifted subes out playing around?Ive seen the 82 on swampers on you tube but it is always with trackers/jeeps/etc...
-
while a 5 speed would be ideal, putting a another 4 speed in means that I might have a chance to go wheeling again this year...Hell my car sat for 3 months because I couldnt afford to to put headgaskets on an engine I had... I read an old post on the matter and it seems that if: Most of your driving is street on small tires= 5 speed Most of your driving is offroad with big tires=4 speed That and I just remembered that my parts car is an 82...

the one on the trailer doesn't belong in this thread. Can anyone post some videos for me?I have some crappy cell phone videos uploaded to my email, but for some reason they won't upload to photobucket...Thanks.

Ill upgrade after I run out of parts DR 4 speeds...

Im guess the torque the motor was making probally snapped the reverse fork.I will replace the transmission for sure, Im just wondering if there might be a way to prevent it

I can't see what your post is jeff. heres some pics of the car after all said and done.pretty good for rwd with an open diff.. http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n45/Uberoo/Subaru%20stuff/?action=view¤t=Picture001.jpg http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n45/Uberoo/Subaru%20stuff/?action=view¤t=Picture002.jpg http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n45/Uberoo/Subaru%20stuff/?action=view¤t=Picture003.jpg http://s109.photobucket.com/albums/n45/Uberoo/Subaru%20stuff/?action=view¤t=Picture004.jpg towards the end of the day mud turned to water and washed away alot of my handywork on the sides of the car.. video will come shortly as soon as the vids cooperate with photobucket, and my buddy wakes up from his alcohol induced coma

I was out playing around in RWD because a front axle blew up.I was trying to get out of deep mud hole.I had reverse fully engaged an all of the power of an ea81 going to the rear wheels to get it out, then I heard a bang.Thought a broke a rear axle until I found that I could still move forwards.I can find the other gears but where reverse normally would be its like reverse doesnt exist any more.Is this a simple linkage problem or did I break the transmission? car is an 84 GL with 235/75/15 mud tires and an old tired EA81 with a bad carb..

Saturday didnt quite turn out how I would have like it but it was still fun regardless.I had a bunch of last minute stuff to do in addition to helping a friend get his rig ready to go.My subaru was ready to go by 10:20, ok still enough time to get up there by 11.As im I backing out of my driveway something on the dash caught my eye and I accidentally backed into a parked truck.I offered to pay for new doors and to get them professionally color matched out of pocket. Not ok for them. They insist on involving the insurance and the cops...I ended up getting a $75 "improper backing" ticket and then the increased premiums of an at fault accident...yaa...didn't do a thing to my car though.not like I would have cared. However, I guess this means that an 84 subaru tin can is stronger than a 98 dodge aluminum can... So I go to my friends house and help him bleed his brakes then we are off.About halfway there we figured what was causing the really bad vibrations from the front end.Turns out the 3 week old axle from schucks was failing, and badly. The inner boot was literally burning off the inner cup.It seems somebody when they assembled it didn't put enough grease in the thing...Oh well, lifetime warranty and all.Maybe the new replacement axle I will undo the clamps holding the boots on and pack them full of grease...or maybe not...Anyway we decided to keep driving up there and then see how long the axle would last. the axle failed about 5 miles from where I could go play.So I popped it into 4wd and continued on my way.At this point in time I was RWD with an open rear diff . and of course my best tires were on the front because at the time I figured "I can weld the rear diff but I can't do anything to improve traction for the front without major surgery...seemed like a good idea until a front driveshaft blew...I was reminded of that fact the whole day as big clunks of mud were flung off the front tires and much smaller pieces came off the back tires...I found out that RWD with mud tires with an open diff is < 4wd with snow tires.I was constantly getting stuck. To make matters worse I was trying to get out of a large mud hole and I lost reverse..I first thought I broke an axle until I figured out that I could still move forwards. That didn't stop me however and we still kept playing until about 6.Then we started to work our way back home, but following different mud trails to get there.. Along the way we came upon the owner of the local 4x4 store and his MASSIVE chevy. 4 door chevy with the bed shortened then converted into a fuel tank. All sitting on 44" boggers,Not to mention a 600 HP supercharged engine...It sounded like a diesel at low to mid range RPMS..Around this time my buddy broke a front axle u joint. so we were both RWD.He was welded solid with 36" super slicks (36" super swampers with only the side wall tread remaining). Then because we now had the big chevy with us we decided to go night wheeling for a nother hour and a half.I was fine with those four lights on the roof and my headlights... . then it was time to go home.Got home took a shower and went straight to a Halloween party. Now I am slightly afraid of sunlight and loud noises I didnt get any pics of the actual wheeling But I did manage to get some really crappy cell phone videos. I got some video of the big chevy and of my friends truck, but I recorded by buddy's truck for to long so it exceeded the file size limit.I never got around to filming him again, opps. He did however get video of me in that one mud hole that I lost reverse. I am not sure if he got that or not. The only vid of my car is when its doing poorly, great. I will get that as soon as he recovers from the party... In the mean time I suppose I can peek outside while wearing my cheap sunglasses and take a couple pictures. Rigs: 1984 Subaru GL-2" lift, 235/75/15 mud tires,RWD,Open diff Sam-1989 Ford ranger, 9"ish lift, 35" all terrains/bald 36" super swampers,4.0 Dennis -massive chevy, bed fuel tank, supercharged 454, 44" boggers Damage report Me- blown 3 week old axle,Lost reverse Sam-blew up front axle ujoint (D35 TTB) Dennis-had to lock in the hubs once or twice Things for my To do list before I can even think about playing again: Fix blown axle,Swap in transmission out of parts car,Weld Rear diff,Build steel bumpers, maybe find a legacy to steal its engine... At least non of my fixes require money.except for bumpers and engine..

any good ones of mine?
-
I try to do the same thing.except I use my 89 Dodge W250 diesel...I have filled the bed up several times...Havent found a car to drag out yet.... love the diesel for that sorta work...just idles over everything...uses like no fuel just putting around...Uses more to drive to the offroad area rather than putting around for hours...
