  1. alright, so yesterday i replaced my front axle on my EA82. i put her in reverse, and lo and behold, i hear one clunk, then another, then some lovely grinding noises. i take everything apart, and realize that they had given me an axle with an inner diameter that was like 1/8 an inch bigger than my old one. fantastic. luckily nothign was stripped. so i put the old one back on and realize that i had absolutely shattered my roll pin when i tried to drive on teh old one. after checking every auto parts store within 30 miles, no one can give me a roll pin of 6mm. my question is this. can i temporarily put 2" x 1/4" nut and bolt in there to hold it on, and second, what size is that roll pin supposed to be?
  2. well, i might give it a whirl myself. but is that the axle i want? what does my 88 GL fall under. if i am looking for parts, does it fall under the Loyale/Leone category?
  3. LAX is about an hour and 15 minutes from here for reference.
  4. would this be the axel im looking for? http://www.autopartsworld.com/1988_subaru_leone-loyale-ohc-4wd_axle-assembly_parts.html
  5. ya, agreed on the not wanting a car payment on the new car, but it is frustrating without a great deal of time or know how. however, i have previously done the fuel and air filter, new radiator and front belts, so im not completely retarded. so with this fix, should i replace the axel as was suggested, or should i get a new joint? what would be the price/effort difference? also, anyone within the santa barbara area willing to help me out on this will be compensated nicely.
  6. alright, so ive had my wagon for a little over a year now. while i have loved/still do love her, she's giving me a little attitude right now and i'm wondering if i should break it off with her soon. she only has 67000 miles on her, but she has been marking all of my territory with her oil stains lately. i put in about a quart every two weeks or so. (not too bad, but still not a good sign). secondly, awhile ago she started making this tick/click noise from the left right tire when she was going about 15-25 miles an hour. at first it was hardly noticeable, but then it turned into a grinding sound that was especially loud on turns and in braking. thinking maybe the wheel wasnt on tight enough, i tightened it down, and now the grinding sound isn't as bad, but there is a loud popping sound from the left on cruising turns that goes away when i give it some gas. so in my guess, my wheel bearing and my cv joint have gone bad. however, there isn't the usual torn boot, grease everywhere sign that something has gone wrong in the cv joint that i usually read about. also, it isn't as bad in the mornings and when i take turns like a grandma. there has also been that popping noise coming from the right front for a while, but only on hard straight braking, never in turns. it is a similar sound. everything else on the car runs really well. so, my dilemma is, i am most likely getting a new car in juneish, and i am currently a busy, poor college student, and while i do have time to work on her, i need her constantly and am without another car to borrow as much as i need to. my question to you is: a) is she worth the fixing, knowing that more stuff is probably going to go out because she is just getting older? should i just ride her out until june when i get a new car, ignoring the popping and clicking, then part her out to you guys? or c) am i running the risk of killing myself by driving this car right now? thanks in advance, kenny
  7. i feel like moron having to ask for directions, but could someone point me in the right place where i could find a process for doing my front brakes and rotors on my 88 subaru wagon? i know there has to be one around here, but cant seem to find it. thanks.
  8. so, im definately losing oil and it appears from the bottom that it is beading on the bottom of my oil filter. is there a problem with my filter, the seal around the filter, or is there oil draining from above the filter and just rolling down the bottom and collecting there?
  9. alright, so im driving home from a camping trip today. it was probably 40 miles on a windy, dirty road (awesome for the 'ru). but it may have been rough on the car. on the way home, the car was making a ticking noise that was only happening at 20-25mph and on straightaways out of the drivers side front. im fairly, if not 100% sure that it is not the CV joint because the boot is solid and the noise was only happening on straightaways. then, i was treated to a brief howling like noise from the right rear at the same speed. both of these stopped when i got down out of the mountains. also, my brakes seem to need some pumping to engage properly. any ideas?
  10. in my 88 subaru GL, whenever i run the AC for a while. after i shut off the car and leave it for a period of time, when i come back, there is a puddle of water on the floor of the passenger side. it appears that there is a hose running up through the floorboard of that side. what do i need to do/replace?
  11. in another post, i mentioned that a mechanic recommended that my clutch be replaced. it was suggested by many that i just adjust it, which i am about to attempt. also, someone said to check if i need a new one by going up a steep hill at 25mph and shifting into 4th to see if it bogs down, and if it does, it is fine. now, i did that, and yes, it did bog down. am i alright, or am i missing something?
  12. sorry, im entirely new to this, but what is a 1/2" breaker bar. also, do i need a timing light or something?
  13. im going to be making a road trip starting tomorrow heading up the US-101 through as far as we can make it in a few days. ive got my cell phone and a very old CB radio for emergency purposes. i also have a handheld VHF marine radio. does anyone use those on land, or are those pretty much strictly Sea-going radios? also, if anyone does live up north of Santa Barbara and would be willing to help me out if ************ hits the fan mechanically on my 88 GL 1.8 FI, i would be forever grateful for a phone number and the county you live in. thanks in advance.
  14. well, old thread, but newbie member here from Santa Barbara. anyone close?
  15. o ya, good call on the fan shroud. i think ill do that.
  16. alright, i just finished putting in the radiator. problems that arose: when i put the new radiator in, the fit was super tight and it rubbed up against the fan assembly, possibly crushing some of whatever are on the back of the radiator, also, the a/c fan shroud would not go back in, do i really need this? the bottom bolts on the other fan would not line up, so i only have two in there now, i dont know if this is just because of the size of my new radiator or what. aannd, i put in too much coolant, thinking for some reason that it took 1 gallon to 1 gallon ratio. so i drained a little and put water in. im just going ot keep filling with water after i run it for a while. all things aside, the car starts, the temp stays down and no leaks that i can find yet.
  17. also, im having way too much trouble disconnecting the wiring male and female connectors from the fan and thermoswitch. what am i doing wrong?
  18. alright, im installing a new radiator and following instructions on the how to keep... manual. maybe im retarded, but i can't seem to find the radiator ground wire. any suggestions on where to look? i understand it is on the top of the radiator, but i cant see anything there.
  19. update: today, i changed the oil, oil filter and air filter. i also replaced the drive belts. oil, and filters were easy. belts were somewhat difficult because the Autozone gave me the wrong size, so i had to go back several times and ended up with a belt that was a little shorter than the stock one. is this going to be a problem? also, the adj. bolt (as it is referred to in the keep your subaru alive manual), although it cannot be tightened anymore, there are still threads on the upper half that are sticking out. this might not make sense, but everything is running for now. im going to probalby run it by a mechanic tomorrow and see if he says everything is alright.
  20. alright, as some of you have read in my other thread, my car needs some work. it has been suggested that i approach some of these problems myself. so, here is the list of things from the mechanic that my car needs. oil and filter change air filter fuel filter major engine tune up timing belt and components need replaced (what are the components) drive belts cracked valve cover gaskets leaking oil pan gasket leaking radiator leaking upper and lower radiator hoses old and worn clutch slipping thermostat and gasket needs replacing clean and adjust rear brakes alright, so i am mentally ready to tackle whatever i can on this car. i will be armed with some basic tools, the how to keep.... book, another subaru repair manual, you guys and my local Autozone. which, if any should i avoid and which should i do first. keep in mind the only other car work i have really done is replaceing the brakes and rotors on my old truck as well as oil changes.
  21. alright, as some af you may have seen in my other thread "just need a little reassurance here", i have a 88 GL with some work that needs to be done. nothing serious, but it is kind of a lot. rather than paying the mechanic for something i would love to do myself for a. cost and b. the experience, if there is anyone around this area who is willing to help me do all of this stuff, and do it well, i will pay them whatever they feel is reasonable. this might be a stretch, but i figure it might pay off. things that need to be done: major tune up, timing belt, drive belt, oil gasket (?) and pan are leaking, water pumps need replace, brakes need adjust, clutch is slipping, hoses need replace. maybe some other things. thanks in advance.
  22. seriously? i understand that labor is around $75-$80 an hour at most shops. so i guess that makes sense that doing it myself would be that much cheaper, and i would love to do so, but i think i might be getting myself into trouble. plus i dont have a lift which is probably something that would be necessary. anyways, if anyone is in the southern california area and can take a day or two to do all of this with me i would be willing to pay them whatever is reasonable.
  23. yup. painful i know. but part of me is thinking that once i do all this i will have a really nice, almost new subaru that should last me forever. im going to talk to my mechanic about it tomorrow.
  24. alright, i am new to the Subaru owner's club with my recent purchase of an '88 GL wagon with 57,000 miles. i picked it up for just over $2,000. interior was perfect, no rust, body in perfect shape. needed a new cv boot, so i replaced that (joint was fine). so i took it to the mechanic today for an overview. he said everything looks fine, but because of the year and that it hadn't been driven that much, a lot was needed to be replaced. he said it needed (and im probably forgetting some stuff here): a good tune up, timing belts, drive belts, radiator is leaking, clutch is slipping, water pumps need replace, brakes need adjust, oil pan is leaking, and some other stuff for a grand total of roughly $2300. am i putting in more money than this car is worth?
