motor is in, yay!
-
I had an absolutely horrible day at work, and there was family drama when i got home. So I turned the stereo up all the way in the garage and got the EJ in.
-
I had a buddy who works for a machine shop do it for me. You can't beat the "buy me a beer this weekend" price.

Didn't really work on much over the holidays but I've been getting work done these last few days. The EA82 is out. I've got my redrilled flywheel all bolted up and am waiting on my adapter plate to drop the engine in. I had a little bit of wierd-ness go on when i went to get a new clutch kit. Turns out the standard clutch disk Shmucks sells dosn't fit my transmission. For some odd reason I have a 1 inch 24T spline on my transmission. Oh well I guess I'll just "have" to use a EJ22 clutch disk . I've been diving full into the wiring. Holy crap OBDII is a lot more work then OBDI just for the simple fact that you can't just follow the EA2EJ guide to the letter.

So I finally got to working on the EA. Stocked up on wood for the wood stove in the garage. Zipped the hood of with my new 18v Makita impact (more on that in a sec). Got the dash almost out before my back/legs/neck/arms decided 240lbs of 6'5" man shouldn't be under a dash. So I jacked the car up and pulled off the exhaust. Holy crap that little drill rocks. Pulled off all the exhaust bolts from the header down to the trailer hitch without well a hitch.

I missed old school subies too much so I had to go and get another one. Then of course when you get one two more just seem to 'show up' at your house. I got a free.99 1986 dual range GL with a cracked head or blown HG (haven't actually gotten into looking at it) And I just picked up a 01' EJ22 out of a OBS. And just because anything worth doing is worth doing the really really hard way. OBDII and as if that wasn't hard enough its a Cali model. Heated garages and redbull are my friend. aparently until 2002 imps had OBDII ports and jumpers. Ordering up my adapter plate with my next paycheck.

I was hoping enough rust would develop so I wouldn't have to.
-
haha I was experiencing some "low top speed" issues with my 84. Throttle cable adjustment FOR THE WIN!

I recently picked up a fairly clean 84 GL for $250 and set about fixing it all up for DD usage. It already had a brand new radiator, alt, and recent tune up. I fixed up the PCV, a torn CV boot, and replaced both the broken front door handels. The big downside is its a 2WD. I'd like to swap it over to 4x4 with a dual range because I really do like the EA81 body styles a lot. My first car was a 83 yellow GL so they kind of have sentimental value to me. Enter the problem. I just got a free 86 dual range wagon for doing a tune up and brakes on a friend of the families legacy. BUT, its got a cracked head. I've done an EJ swap before and deep down I'd rather do that swap then put another EA in. I don't really have the space/money to be involved with 2 projects right now. I guess I've answered my own question. Rock the 84 and let the 86 sit until I have the means to get it fix 'right'. but any thoughts on the matter would be much appreciated.

ok check! RATS, I plugged the black connectors in and it flashed a different code then 30. BUT after that It went right back to the 30 blink and now I can't get it to come back. any ideas?
-
wait wait do I JUST connect the black ones? I thought I connected the black AND the green? I get 3 blinks with them disconnected and 3 blinks with them connected but the fuel pump also cycles after each blink cycle.
-
so with my engine not being able to start i would Crank the engine (without the connectors plugged in) connect them turn key to the (on position) Read code flashes? correct? when I just plug them in and turn the key to ON I get 3 of the slower blinks and then my fuel pump primes 3 blinks prime 3 blinks and so on till I turn it off.
-
so after realizing that a fixable problem was not hearing the fuel pump I got that seemingly working just fine. NOW i AM getting an ECU code of 30. anyone know where I can find a code list? I only found OBDII in the USRM
-
ok sweet I'm going down to take a look/do work tomorrow so I'll report back then. I'm PRETTY sure I did plug everything in. Yes its obd 1 i'm sure of that. the car started up and ran just fine a week before I pulled the motor out so i doubt there is a problem with the injectors that kinda thing. I hope.
-
ECU powers up fine (fuel pump comes on and off when I flip the toggle switch) the ecu doesn't give me any codes. I believe I correctly hotwired the yellow wire to the alt power wire with little effect. Could miss wiring of the "start" for the ej22 harness ignition cause the coil not to get the single to spark ? I'm not 100% sure but I think I remember the engine coming from a 92 auto wagon.

ok so first of all, I'm back. Long story short I was down in utah staying with some faimly down there for 4 moths or so but i'm back home in washington now and I need to get my Ej22 swaped 87 wagon running for work. My main problem is I've got no spark. Now the bad part is my car is at a friends house 30 minutes away from me so its gonna be a pain to get work done on it. I know I need to test for power at the coil. How do I do this ? which wires should have power etc etc? if I DON'T have power what should I do to get it power? and if I do whats the next thing to check for a no spark issue? also if any of the washington guys would like to make say $100 this weekend getting my wagon to run I'd be more then willing to throw the money at it if you can help me get it running. Thanks again guys.

what kind of size tires would I be looking at (reasonably ie not a HUGE amount of fender cutting) with one of the SJR 3.5 inch lift kits for the EA82 ? I'm thinking about lifting mine when I get back to WA.

as far as I can tell this is what I need to do power wise. incase you can't read it cause its to small. Blue is wires that are part of my stock EJ harness (that I didn't take out) Green is stuff thats part of my stock EA harness and red is wire that I myself need to run
-
Alt is all wired up YAY, I just kinda want to check to make sure some of the stuff I've done so far is right. the PDF file for the EA2EJ was kinda fuzzy so I wasn't 100% sure on some of these. Speed sensor Plug B58 Pin 11 Starter Switch Plug B56 Pin 10 (from what I can tell I run pin 2 from my igition relay to the ON position in my tumbler, and I run Pin 10 to the START position. So pin 10 will be getting power whenever the key is in the START position and pin 2 on my relay will be getting power whenever I'm in the "ON" position. Is that right?) ECU memory Plug B48 Pin 15 now per the diagram in Numbchux PDF (thank you so much for that btw) pin 5 and 6 of my ignition relay will have power at all times. I guess a simpler way to answer all these questions is how much of the wiring in this diagram do I have to solder in myself and how much/what wires are already included in my stock harness ? http://toshcari.googlepages.com/Picture5.jpg Thanks again guys

Sweet I had seen that picture before but after I un loomed my EJ stuff I had some ? Time to get a soldering gents

Ok I'm almost done with this guys I swear soon I'll be helping people my question for the day is my alternator wiring. From what I've talked to Tex and others about is that I'm running the main charge cable from the Ej22 alt (the one with the 10mm bolt) straight to the positive terminal of my battery. and that I should solder the EJ plug to my EA alt plug wires. My question is which wires and where ? http://toshcari.googlepages.com/IMG_0614.JPG as you can see the 2 "charge" wires that I would go to my + term on my battery have a wire that goes to my EJ alt plug. now from what I can recall my EA plug didn't have this. So should I leave that as is and just splice the 2 wires on the plug? this would mean that the plug on my alternator would have a constant source of power from my battery. Is that right ? or should I cut that big white wire and only splice the 2 wires from my EA plug? I'm hoping to get this cranking sometime tomorrow I think this is my "last" question so 5 points for whoever answers it

hit me up on AIM or something sometime I'm right in the middle of my EJ22 swap I could probably help you out with some price figures and such.

Ack holy crap 911!!! my throttle cable is about 6 inches to short? I need to find this out ASAP what cable do I need EJ22e, GL-10 turbo? obviously my XT one for my spider manifold is too short thanks guys.
