First of all, i have not taken a Subaru Engine apart. I have worked on Datsun Engines mostly. Pin heights mean something when you are building a hybrid motor. This would be like if you could build a 2 or 2.2 liter from using a legacy 2.2 piston. If the pin heights are the same and the pins are the same or something can be machined. To determine what the difference is in compression, you have to look to see if the rod length is the same as well, and then if all that is the same, it is all to do with cylinder head volume. The other determining factor in compression is head gasket thickness. Thicker gasket equals lower compression

Tonight I bled the brakes in my Sube. I also took a back wheel off and put it on the front. After that, the front wheel (silver paint 5.5") started to rub the caliper. The one that was on did not. I put the wheel on because the car was pulling slightly to the right and the other tire was newer. So, I switched the other back tire/wheel to the front. It rubs too. I didnt want to put the original one that was on, b/c I didnt like the handling. The other wheels are black 5" steels. Im not sure on the width of the wheels, but the silver wheel for sure is 1/2" wider than the black ones. Can anyone say what is going on and why?

Ok, for all you guys that hunt JY's. If you are going to look for a Weber Carb, this is what you should look for. First I will mark the cars and trucks, and then the model of carbs. I will be pleased to tell you if the carb is worthwhile if you find something else. I have the repair kits available. Vehicles Datsun/Nissan - carbureted trucks and cars pre 1986 L, Z, A, E series engines Toyota - Corolla pre 87, Celica-pre 81, Land Cruiser 80's and earlier, Pickups pre-88 Mazda - B2600, B2200 trucks. Most cars had people that didnt care about performance other than rotaries Suzuki - 1300 Samurai Mitsubishi/Dodge D50 - carbureted pickups, Raiders, Colt front drives BMW - 2002 with 2 barrel manifolds (best place to find Webers) Opel - Opel GT Volvo-non fuel injection cars (144, 122) Jeep-CJ, Wrangler with 258 motor Ford - Old Cortina mark 1 (1967?) Carbs to use 32/36 DGV (manual choke), 32/36 DGAV (auto choke), 32 DGAV, 32 DGV 38 DGAS Maximum performance, mileage will be lower 36 DCD, 28/36 DCD Questionable carbs Holley 5200/Weber 32/36 DFAV - linkage reversed to DGV series, most Holleys have linkage that is not bolted on and some have non changeable idle jets, throttle shafts wear easy Fiat Webers, DMSA series harder to get parts, linkage reversed, 1800 carbs will not fit adaptor Renault Webers DIR series- same as Fiat If you are handy, and have access to parts, the Renault and Fiat carbs will work OK

Cheap Webers and better adapter plates
bigjim5551212 replied to tdangelo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
This is a very interesting post. I have all the adaptors here. And I have a good deal on Carbs. I will report on this. I will order a couple carb base gaskets from the auto parts store and see what is going on. If this is all true. I have a heavy duty 2 piece adaptor that fits Datsun, early Toyota, Mitsubishi, Mazda B2600. Jim -
I have those adaptors in stock. Call me at 1-604-879-6288 . I will give you a good price. Ask for Jim

weber rebuild q's
bigjim5551212 replied to the sucker king's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Make sure the screws and throttle plates are out of the way. But then why are you taking the secondary apart? It never has wear on it. If you take everything apart except the secondary, there will be no problems. Make sure you take all the rubber parts out. Regarding reseating. Forget that noise. The only things that would need that would be the idle jets. And I have not heard about them leaking in the past. Make sure you get a power valve diaphram if this is all coming apart. Or make sure the old one is not got pin holes in the rubber. If you want to contact me directly, I know a lot about these carbs. Jim -
With regards to propane. I was a member of the TDI club for VW TDI and they talk about propane injection instead of water injecton. This is the same idea as Nitrous as well. So, I would say on high boost turbo applications, propane injection would be a good thing. In Vancouver here and a lot of places in Canada, propane is used as a single fuel motor fuel. Reasons 1)Cost. for say a Fed Ex or UPS truck or a taxi that runs around town all day, the cost is about 1/2 off gasoline. 2)Pollution. Much less pollution that gasoline. 3)Range. With a couple engine mods ie increased compression. You can have a larger range than gasoline, if you have the correct tanks. 4)Power, if you increase the compression to 12-1 or run a turbo on stock compression, you have the benefits of increased power

Need the Owners Manual 88 GL10

Subaru to Nissan Differentials
bigjim5551212 replied to bigjim5551212's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
a datsun diff has flanges with 4 studs on it. The axle bolts on to the flange. Only cars that dont have this is diesel maximas, 1974 260Z and turbo ZX -
Has anyone looked at the Nissan differentials, out of old 510's, Z cars, 240SX, to see if they bolt up to a Subaru or the other way around?

On my 88 Turbo EA82, there appears to be no timing marks on the front pulley. There is a rubber cover on the back of the motor and I see the cast in pointer in the engine block. But for the life of me, I cant see any marks on the flywheel. I think the timing is ok, since it pings on boost on regular gas and it doesnt on premium. Any comments?

My car is a sedan, turbo, automatic. It says full time 4wd on the back and on the cast aluminum piece on the top of the intake. I think it might have 2wd front struts and it does have coil overs on the back. And by the way, it has a sway bar on the back as well -
OK, my car is an 88 GL10 Turbo AWD Auto. First of all, do you guys call that an RX? Secondly. My car does not have air suspension any more. I would like to know what the stuff that is in my car is now ie Springs and struts. The back end is way up in the air and the front end is what I call a normal height . What should I look at?

So, you guys all want larger diameter wheels. You usally have to find some dead Pugwhat and get the wheels off of that poor old car or you have to start drilling holes in the hubs and make 6 bolt hubs for Blazer, Toyota, Nissan, Mazda truck wheels. I saw something under the hood of my Subaru. There is a 15" spare tire there. There is tons of rusted out subes in the JY. All you have to do is to get the spare wheels widened by a wheel shop. Then you can whatever offset you want and any width.

You have a good point there

Cars Available to Me and maybe You
bigjim5551212 replied to bigjim5551212's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
We bid on the XT4 and the XT6. The XT4 is rebuildable and the XT6 is for dismantling. The XT4 has only 42000km on it. I will let all you know if anything is available. -
What are the signs and symptoms of the TPS going bad. My car is a 88 GL10 AWD turbo. It has an idle speed that doesnt usually go below 1000rpm and now, when you rev it up, and the engine comes to an idle, there is a funny vibration.

You have to remember a couple things about coils. The ones you guys are talking about are made for slow revving V8's mostly. I think if you look at some of them such as Crane PS92? they are good for higher revving motors. We had one on an Alfa Romeo. We used to run the Accel Super Coil, the big yellow brick, in Datsun 510 race cars. We had to use points in that series. Well, we had to run 2 ballast resistors, otherwise the points would go bad quickly.
